What Is Reiki Attunement? Ceremony, Levels & Science

A Reiki attunement is a ritual performed by a Reiki Master that is said to open a student’s energy channels so they can receive and transmit Reiki energy. Think of it as an initiation. Unlike learning a hands-on massage technique from a textbook, Reiki tradition holds that the ability to channel energy must be directly passed from teacher to student through this ceremony. Without it, practitioners believe the energy simply doesn’t flow in the same way.

Attunements are the gateway into Reiki practice. They’re structured into levels, each one expanding what a practitioner can do, and the experience varies widely from person to person. Here’s what actually happens during the process and what you can realistically expect.

What Happens During the Ceremony

A traditional Usui Reiki attunement is quieter and more meditative than most people expect. Students sit with their eyes closed, hands held together in a prayer position called Gassho. The Reiki Master moves around each student, performing the ritual either in silence or with sacred chanting. There’s no loud music, no dramatic gestures.

During the ritual, the Master channels energy into the student’s crown (the top of the head), then moves down to the heart and hands. Specific Reiki symbols are traced or “placed” into the student’s energy field and energy centers. The whole process typically takes 15 to 30 minutes per student, though group attunements may run longer. Some students report feeling warmth, tingling, or a deep sense of calm. Others feel very little in the moment and notice changes only in the days that follow.

The Three Levels of Attunement

Reiki training is divided into three levels, each with its own attunement. You can’t skip ahead; each level builds on the previous one.

Level 1 (Shoden) focuses on self-healing and basic hands-on practice. This is where most people start. The attunement is meant to open your energy channels for the first time, and the training covers hand positions for treating yourself and others through direct touch. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, for example, offers a Level 1 program designed to give learners the practical skills to provide Reiki treatments to themselves and patients.

Level 2 (Okuden) introduces Reiki symbols, which are specific shapes practitioners draw or visualize to direct energy in different ways. Two of the most widely taught are Cho Ku Rei, used to clear energy blockages and focus attention on a specific area of the body, and Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, used for distance healing, meaning the practitioner sends energy to someone who isn’t physically present. The Level 2 attunement is said to significantly increase the strength of energy a practitioner can channel.

Level 3 / Master Level is for those who want to teach and attune others. This level includes additional symbols and intensive training in performing the attunement ceremony itself. Master training is typically offered by appointment only, one-on-one with an experienced teacher. Certification in advanced Reiki training is usually a prerequisite before you can pursue Master Teacher status.

The 21-Day Cleansing Period

After each attunement, practitioners are told to expect a 21-day adjustment period, sometimes called a “detox” or cleansing cycle. The idea is that the attunement stirs up old, stagnant energy in your system, and your body needs time to release it.

Commonly reported experiences during this window include changes in sleep patterns, shifts in appetite, mild headaches, and fatigue. On the emotional side, memories or feelings you thought you’d processed long ago may resurface. Some people describe becoming more sensitive to the moods and energy of people around them, along with sharper intuition and stronger emotional responses. These experiences tend to come in waves rather than hitting all at once, and they typically fade by the end of the three weeks.

Practitioners are generally encouraged to drink extra water, practice self-Reiki daily, and give themselves more rest than usual during this period.

Distance Attunements

Traditionally, attunements happen in person. But distance attunements, performed remotely, have become increasingly common, especially since online learning expanded. There are three main formats.

  • Pre-recorded attunements: The Reiki Master performs the attunement once while creating an online or recorded course and sends it “into the universe” for students to receive whenever they’re ready. There is no direct interaction.
  • Scheduled group attunements: The Master performs attunements at a set recurring time, such as every Monday at 6 p.m. Students who want to receive tune in at that time, but there’s no individual communication.
  • Individual scheduled attunements: The Master and student choose a specific time, communicate directly before and after, and the Master uses the distance healing symbol (Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen) to project energy to the student. Crystals may be chosen based on the individual student. This format is the closest to an in-person experience.

Distance attunements are controversial within the Reiki community. Some Masters consider them fully valid, arguing that if both teacher and student share clear intention and focus, the energy transfers regardless of physical distance. Others feel strongly that the in-person connection is essential and that distance attunements dilute the process. If you’re considering this route, the individually scheduled format with direct communication offers the most personal experience.

What the Science Says

Reiki as a whole has limited but growing research behind it, and the attunement process specifically hasn’t been studied in controlled settings. What has been studied is the effect of Reiki sessions on measurable body responses.

A 2004 pilot study found that heart rate and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly in people receiving Reiki compared to both placebo and control groups. A 2008 study on laboratory rats found that 15-minute daily Reiki sessions over five days significantly reduced resting heart rate compared to sham Reiki. However, a more recent randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial with 48 subjects found no statistically significant difference between Reiki, sham Reiki, and no treatment for heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, or stress levels. The comparison between Reiki and sham groups for heart rate came close to significance (p = 0.053), but the researchers noted they couldn’t draw definitive conclusions from a pilot study of that size.

In short, the physiological evidence is mixed and limited. What is well documented is that many hospitals and medical centers now integrate Reiki as a complementary therapy. Programs like the one at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia frame Reiki as a mind-body modality that can help decrease perceptions of pain, increase calmness, and promote restful sleep. The emphasis in medical settings is on Reiki as a complement to conventional treatment, not a replacement.

What to Know Before Your First Attunement

If you’re considering getting attuned, the most important choice is your Reiki Master. There is no single governing body for Reiki certification, so training quality varies enormously. Look for a teacher who can trace their lineage (the chain of Master-to-student transmission) back through a recognized tradition, who spends meaningful time on hands-on practice, and who is transparent about what each level covers.

Cost ranges widely, from free community attunements to several hundred dollars per level. Expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better. What matters more is whether the teacher provides ongoing support, especially during that 21-day integration period, and whether the training includes enough practice time for you to feel confident using Reiki afterward.

Level 1 is a low-commitment starting point. You’ll learn self-treatment techniques and basic hand positions, and you can sit with the practice for months or years before deciding whether to pursue Level 2. There’s no pressure to advance through all three levels, and many people practice happily at Level 1 for their entire lives.
