What Is SilverSneakers and Does Medicare Cover It?

SilverSneakers is a fitness program for adults 65 and older that provides free access to gyms, group exercise classes, and online workouts through qualifying Medicare plans. It’s included as a benefit in many Medicare Advantage and Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance) plans, meaning eligible members pay nothing out of pocket for a gym membership that would otherwise cost them hundreds of dollars a year.

What the Program Includes

SilverSneakers gives members access to a network of thousands of gyms and fitness centers across the country. At participating locations, you can use cardio equipment like treadmills, strength equipment like free weights and machines, and amenities such as walking tracks and pools. Many of these locations also offer group fitness classes designed for older adults, including yoga, water aerobics, tai chi, cardio and strength classes, and boot camps. Class availability varies by location.

Beyond traditional gyms, the program runs what it calls FLEX classes. These are instructor-led group sessions held in community parks, recreation centers, and other non-gym settings. FLEX classes tend to focus on strength, balance, and flexibility at a low-impact pace, making them a good option if a full gym feels intimidating or unnecessary.

For days when you’d rather stay home, SilverSneakers provides online fitness classes, on-demand workout videos, and an online library covering topics like cardio routines, strength training, fall prevention, and healthy eating. This mix of in-person and digital options means you’re not locked into one way of staying active.

Who Is Eligible

Eligibility comes down to your insurance plan. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage or Medigap plan that includes SilverSneakers as a benefit, you qualify automatically at no extra cost. Not every Medicare plan includes it, though, so you’ll need to verify. The two simplest ways to check: call your insurance provider directly or enter your information on the SilverSneakers website.

If your plan does cover it, you can fill out a form on the SilverSneakers website to get a member ID card. Print that card, bring it to any participating gym or fitness center, and you’re set. There’s no separate sign-up fee, no monthly charge, and no contract to worry about.

Why It Exists: Health Benefits for Older Adults

Insurance companies don’t offer free gym memberships out of generosity. They do it because keeping older adults physically active reduces healthcare costs. The research backs this up. A study published in Population Health Management compared Medicare beneficiaries who participated in SilverSneakers with similar beneficiaries who didn’t, tracking them over multiple years.

The results were striking across nearly every measure. Participants had significantly fewer limitations in daily activities like bathing, dressing, and walking. By the second year of the study, 82.4% of SilverSneakers members reported no impairment in any of six key daily activities, compared to just 74.8% of non-participants. That gap widened over time, suggesting the program helped slow the physical decline that often accelerates in older age. Participation was also significantly associated with fewer hospital admissions and lower overall healthcare costs after two years.

The emotional and social benefits were just as notable. Members reported significantly better physical and emotional health across all five measures the researchers tracked. Perhaps most telling: only 7.4% of SilverSneakers participants reported social limitations due to health problems, compared to 18.9% of non-participants. Regular exercise in a group setting addresses two problems at once, keeping the body active while reducing the isolation that many older adults experience.

What Classes Look Like

SilverSneakers classes are designed with older adults in mind, but that doesn’t mean they’re all gentle stretching. The program offers a range of intensity levels. Some classes focus on seated exercises and basic flexibility work for people with limited mobility. Others incorporate resistance bands, light weights, or pool-based exercises that use water for low-impact resistance. Higher-intensity options like boot camps exist for people who are already fairly active and want more of a challenge.

Most classes run 45 to 60 minutes and are led by certified instructors trained to work with older adults. The group format is a big part of the appeal. Many members attend the same class at the same time each week, which creates a built-in social routine.

How to Get Started

The process takes about 10 minutes. First, confirm your plan includes SilverSneakers by checking the program’s website or calling your insurance provider. Once confirmed, complete the online enrollment form to receive your member ID. You can print it immediately. Then search for participating gyms and FLEX class locations near you through the SilverSneakers website or app. Walk into any participating location with your ID card and you’re a member.

If your current Medicare plan doesn’t include SilverSneakers, you may want to factor that into your decision during the next open enrollment period. Many people choose Medicare Advantage plans partly based on fitness benefits, and the value of a year-round gym membership with classes can be significant, especially when it costs you nothing beyond your existing premiums.
