Software simulation is the process of building a digital model of a real or proposed system, then running that model on a computer to observe how the system behaves under different conditions. Instead of building a physical prototype or testing something in the real world, you create a virtual version defined by mathematical and logical rules, feed it data, and watch what happens. The global simulation software market was valued at $15 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach over $40 billion by 2034, reflecting how central this approach has become across nearly every industry.

How Software Simulation Works

At its core, a simulation starts with a model: an abstract representation of a system. That model captures the key entities involved, the different states those entities can be in, the rules governing how they transition between states, and the events that trigger changes. For a simple example, imagine modeling a checkout line at a grocery store. The entities are customers and cashiers. The states include “waiting,” “being served,” and “finished.” The rules define how long each customer takes and how often new customers arrive.

Once the model is built, the software runs it forward through time, tracking every state change and recording the results. Discrete Event vs. Continuous Simulation

Simulations generally fall into two broad categories depending on how they handle time. Discrete event simulations move forward in jumps, from one event to the next. Time only advances when something meaningful happens: a customer arrives, a machine finishes a task, a packet reaches a server. Between events, the system state doesn’t change. This makes discrete event simulation efficient for modeling queues, logistics networks, call centers, and manufacturing lines where activity happens in distinct steps.

Continuous simulations, by contrast, model systems that evolve smoothly over time. They rely on differential equations rather than event triggers, making them a natural fit for processes like fluid dynamics, chemical reactions, population growth, or climate patterns. These processes don’t pause between events; they’re always changing. Continuous models take into account the exact time intervals between measurements, while discrete models assume equally spaced steps. In practice, the choice often comes down to the nature of the system you’re modeling and how much computational complexity you’re willing to manage.

Monte Carlo Simulation

One of the most widely used simulation techniques is the Monte Carlo method, which tackles uncertainty head-on. Rather than assuming fixed inputs, a Monte Carlo simulation runs a model thousands or millions of times, each time drawing random values from probability distributions for the uncertain variables. The result isn’t a single answer but a range of possible outcomes and their likelihoods.

This approach is especially useful when a system has many interconnected variables and no clean mathematical solution exists. A business risk analyst might use Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate how fluctuations in sales volume, commodity prices, labor costs, interest rates, and exchange rates all interact to affect profitability. In reliability engineering, it computes how likely an entire system is to fail based on the failure probabilities of individual components. The US Coast Guard uses Monte Carlo methods in its search and rescue software to calculate the probable locations of missing vessels, then generates search patterns that maximize the chance of finding them. The technique provides approximate solutions to problems that would be impossible to solve with pure math alone.

Simulation vs. Emulation

People often confuse simulation with emulation, but the two serve different purposes. Simulation creates an abstract model of a system to predict behavior, test designs, or explore scenarios. It doesn’t need to replicate the original system’s internal hardware or architecture. It’s typically written in high-level programming languages and runs quickly because it’s focused on modeling outcomes, not mimicking machinery.

Emulation, on the other hand, recreates the exact behavior of one system on a different system. Its goal is to let you run software or hardware designed for one platform on another, preserving the original experience down to the machine level. Emulators are commonly written in low-level assembly language and involve translating binary instructions, which makes them significantly slower. If you’ve ever played a classic video game console on your laptop through an emulator, that’s emulation. If an engineer is testing how a proposed bridge design responds to wind loads, that’s simulation.

Where Simulation Is Used

The range of industries relying on software simulation is vast, and the applications go well beyond engineering.

In healthcare, medical device manufacturers use simulation to design, optimize, and test devices inside virtual models of the human body. Engineers can simulate how a cardiovascular device interacts with heart tissue, test orthopedic implants against patient-specific bone structures, and check for biocompatibility or fatigue failure, all before a physical prototype is ever built. One university team used simulation software to help design a total artificial heart. Another company used it to develop affordable prosthetic limbs for amputees in lower-income countries.

In aerospace and automotive engineering, simulation models airflow over wing surfaces, crash impact on vehicle structures, and thermal stress on engine components. These industries were early adopters because physical testing is extraordinarily expensive and, in the case of spacecraft, often impossible to repeat.

In manufacturing, simulation helps companies validate the expected performance of production facilities before they’re built or retooled. You can identify system constraints, analyze throughput and capacity, test maintenance schedules, and model reliability. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) highlights simulation as a low-cost, fast analysis tool for product design and verification, particularly valuable for small and medium-sized manufacturers who can’t afford to learn lessons through trial and error on the shop floor.

The core advantages come down to three things: cost, risk, and time. Building and testing a physical prototype can be orders of magnitude more expensive than running a virtual one. Simulation lets you detect errors early in the design process, before they become mechanical damage or safety hazards in the real world. And because virtual tests run far faster than physical ones, the entire development cycle compresses. Products reach the market sooner.

Beyond those practical gains, simulation improves understanding. It forces you to define a system’s rules explicitly, which often reveals assumptions or gaps you hadn’t noticed. It enables sophisticated “what if” analyses that deal with the complexity of interdependent variables. And it supports better decision-making by letting you compare dozens or hundreds of scenarios before committing to one path. For training purposes, flight simulators and surgical simulators let people build skills in environments where mistakes carry no real consequences.

Digital Twins and AI-Driven Simulation

A digital twin takes simulation a step further by connecting the virtual model to a real-world system through live data feeds. Where a traditional simulation runs on historical or hypothetical inputs, a digital twin continuously updates itself with sensor data from the physical system it mirrors, enabling real-time monitoring and prediction. In practice, however, a systematic literature review published in ScienceDirect found that many systems marketed as digital twins are essentially standard simulation models. There’s still a gap between the concept’s full capabilities and how most organizations actually implement it.

Artificial intelligence is also reshaping what’s possible. AI-driven systems can analyze vast datasets to generate insights that would be invisible to human modelers, run predictive models, and conduct scenario analyses at scales that were previously impractical. Cloud-based platforms make these AI-enhanced simulations scalable, so companies can handle larger and more complex models without overhauling their infrastructure. The combination of AI, cloud computing, and simulation is making it feasible for smaller organizations to access capabilities that were once limited to the largest corporations and research institutions.
