What Is Speechreading? How It Differs From Lip Reading

Speechreading is the skill of understanding spoken language by watching a speaker’s face, not just their lips. While many people use “speechreading” and “lip reading” interchangeably, speechreading is the broader term. It includes reading lip movements, yes, but also interpreting jaw positions, facial expressions, head movements, eye gaze, gestures, and body posture to piece together what someone is saying. Only about 40% of English speech sounds are actually visible on the lips, which is why the rest of the face and body matter so much.

How Speechreading Differs From Lip Reading

Lip reading, in the strictest sense, focuses on the movements and positions of the mouth, lips, and jaw during speech. Speechreading casts a wider net. A speechreader watches for raised eyebrows that signal a question, a shrug that changes the meaning of a phrase, or a shift in posture that suggests sarcasm or emphasis. They also draw on context: the topic of conversation, the setting, and the words that logically follow one another.

This distinction matters because the lips alone don’t give you enough information. Many sounds are produced deep in the throat or at the back of the mouth, completely invisible from the outside. The sounds for “k,” “g,” and “h,” for example, look like almost nothing on the lips. Without facial context and situational clues, a lip reader would be lost far more often than a speechreader.

Why It’s Harder Than It Looks

One of the biggest challenges in speechreading is that many words look identical on the lips. The words “bat,” “pat,” and “mat” all produce nearly the same mouth shape. So do “fifteen” and “fifty.” These visual twins are called homophenes, and English is full of them. A speechreader has to use the surrounding sentence and context to figure out which word the speaker actually said. If someone says “I need a new ___” while standing in a kitchen, “pan” is more likely than “ban” or “man,” even though all three look the same.

Accents, facial hair, poor lighting, and speakers who mumble or turn away all compound the difficulty. Even under ideal conditions, skilled speechreaders rarely catch every word. They’re filling in gaps constantly, using grammar, topic knowledge, and probability to reconstruct the message. It’s cognitively demanding work, more like solving a running puzzle than passively receiving information.

How Your Brain Processes Visual Speech

Your brain doesn’t treat what you see and what you hear as separate channels. It blends them together in real time. A region along the side of the brain called the superior temporal sulcus acts as the main hub for combining visual and auditory speech signals. It synchronizes the timing of what your eyes and ears pick up so that a speaker’s lip movements and voice feel like one unified experience.

A famous demonstration of this blending is the McGurk effect. If you watch a video of someone mouthing “ga” while the audio plays “ba,” most people hear a third sound entirely, like “da.” Your brain isn’t choosing one input over the other. It’s merging them into something new. This illusion shows that visual speech information isn’t just a backup system. It actively shapes what you perceive, even when your hearing is perfectly fine. Areas across the brain, from visual processing regions in the back of the head to motor areas involved in producing speech yourself, all participate in making sense of what a speaker’s face is telling you.

Who Benefits Most From Speechreading

People with hearing loss benefit the most, and many develop stronger speechreading abilities than hearing individuals simply through years of relying on it. Research on adults who were born with severe to profound deafness shows they consistently outperform hearing adults on speechreading tasks. This advantage holds whether they use hearing aids, cochlear implants, or no hearing device at all.

A notable study of 97 adults who were deaf later in life found they scored significantly higher on visual word recognition than a comparison group of 163 hearing adults, even before receiving a cochlear implant. After implantation, their speechreading advantage persisted for years, even as their ability to understand speech through sound alone improved dramatically. The brain doesn’t abandon a skill it spent years developing just because a new input becomes available.

Among people implanted with cochlear devices during childhood, those who received their implant later (and therefore spent more years relying on visual speech) tended to be better speechreaders. Earlier implantation was linked to lower speechreading scores, likely because those children had less need to depend on visual cues during their formative years. This pattern supports the idea that the brain compensates for reduced hearing by sharpening visual speech perception.

Speechreading also helps people with normal hearing in everyday situations. Noisy restaurants, crowded parties, or conversations through a car window all become easier when you can see the speaker’s face. Most people do this unconsciously to some degree.

How Speechreading Is Taught

Speechreading training generally falls under aural rehabilitation, the broader set of interventions designed to help people manage hearing loss. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association includes it as part of evidence-based guidelines for adults with hearing loss, drawing on a systematic review of 85 studies published over more than four decades.

Training approaches tend to follow one of two strategies. The first is analytic, a bottom-up method where you start with the smallest visual units (individual sounds and syllables) and practice identifying them in isolation before combining them into words and sentences. The second is synthetic, a top-down method where you start with whole words or sentences in context and work backward to recognize the visual patterns within them. Most modern programs blend both approaches, because real conversation demands that you switch fluidly between zooming in on a specific mouth shape and stepping back to interpret the whole message.

Practice typically involves watching a speaker (live or recorded) produce words and sentences, then identifying what was said. Exercises increase in difficulty by removing context clues, introducing background noise, or using unfamiliar vocabulary. Repetition and variety matter: practicing with multiple speakers helps because no two people move their mouths in exactly the same way.

Digital Tools for Practice

A growing number of apps and computer programs offer speechreading practice outside of clinical sessions. These tools use video clips of speakers producing words and sentences at adjustable difficulty levels. Clinicians and patients report that the main advantages are convenience, the ability to practice more frequently, and interactive features that keep motivation up.

The drawbacks are real, though. Some platforms are expensive, and older adults sometimes struggle with navigation. Screen-based practice can’t fully replicate the unpredictability of live conversation, where speakers move, look away, and change topics without warning. Professionals generally view digital tools as a useful supplement to in-person training rather than a replacement. Rigorous data on how well specific apps improve speechreading outcomes is still limited, so choosing a program based on clinical recommendation rather than marketing is a safer bet.

Practical Tips for Speechreading

  • Face the speaker directly. Even a slight angle reduces the amount of visual information available from the lips and face.
  • Control the lighting. The speaker’s face should be well lit, not backlit by a window or screen.
  • Reduce background noise when possible. Even though speechreading is visual, noise increases cognitive load and makes it harder to combine what you see with any residual hearing.
  • Ask speakers to keep their hands away from their face. A hand on the chin or a habit of covering the mouth blocks critical visual cues.
  • Use context aggressively. Knowing the topic of conversation before it starts gives you a major advantage in filling gaps between the words you catch.
  • Take breaks. Speechreading is mentally exhausting. Fatigue degrades accuracy quickly, so stepping away for even a few minutes helps.
