What Is Squirting? Facts About Female Ejaculation

Squirting is the release of fluid from the urethra during sexual arousal or orgasm. It’s a normal physiological response that somewhere between 5% and 54% of women report experiencing, depending on the survey. Despite how often it comes up in conversations and media, the science behind it has only recently started catching up, and researchers now understand that what people call “squirting” actually involves two distinct types of fluid from two different sources.

Squirting and Ejaculation Are Two Different Things

One of the biggest clarifications from recent research is that “squirting” and “female ejaculation” are not the same event, even though the terms are used interchangeably in everyday language. They differ in volume, appearance, and chemical makeup.

Female ejaculation, in the technical sense, produces a small amount of thick, milky white fluid. It comes from two tiny glands called the Skene’s glands, which sit on either side of the urethra. These glands develop from the same embryonic tissue that becomes the prostate in males, which is why they’re sometimes called the “female prostate.” The fluid they produce contains proteins similar to those found in male semen, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein that in men helps sperm move more freely.

Squirting, on the other hand, involves a much larger volume of clear, watery fluid. It can range from a small gush to enough to soak through sheets. Chemical analysis shows this fluid is mostly similar to very dilute urine, with lower concentrations of urea and creatinine than normal urine, but it also contains small amounts of PSA from the Skene’s glands. So squirting fluid is its own thing: not exactly urine, not exactly ejaculate, but a mix influenced by both the bladder and the female prostate.

Neurophysiologist Beverly Whipple, one of the researchers who helped identify the G-spot, has argued that “female ejaculation” should only refer to the small milky secretion, not the larger gush. As researcher Barry Komisaruk put it: “There are evidently two different fluids, with two different sources.”

Where the Fluid Comes From

The Skene’s glands are responsible for the ejaculate component. They’re small ducts that swell with blood flow during arousal, provide some lubrication during sex, and can release their milky secretion during orgasm. Their size varies significantly from person to person, which may partly explain why some women ejaculate noticeably and others don’t at all.

The larger volume of squirting fluid passes through the urethra and involves the bladder. Ultrasound studies have shown that the bladder fills rapidly during arousal, even in women who emptied it right beforehand, and then empties again at the moment of squirting. This is why many women feel a strong urge to urinate right before it happens. The bladder’s involvement is real, but the fluid’s chemistry is distinct enough from straight urine that calling it “just pee” is an oversimplification.

What Triggers It

Squirting is most commonly associated with stimulation of the front wall of the vagina, the area popularly known as the G-spot. This isn’t a single anatomical button but rather a zone where several sensitive structures overlap: the internal portion of the clitoris, the Skene’s glands, the urethra, and surrounding erectile tissue. When this area is stimulated, those tissues swell, and for some women, that engorgement eventually leads to the release of fluid.

Not all squirting happens through G-spot stimulation, though. Some women experience it during clitoral stimulation, during penetration, or from a combination. The common thread seems to be a buildup of pressure and arousal in the pelvic area rather than any single technique.

What It Feels Like

The sensation varies widely. Some women describe it as a sudden release of pressure or tension, often followed by a deep sense of physical relief. Others experience it as a full-body orgasm that feels different from a typical clitoral orgasm, more diffuse and internal rather than sharp and focused. Some barely notice the fluid itself and only realize it happened afterward.

The “need to pee” sensation right before squirting is extremely common and makes sense given the bladder’s involvement. For many women, this feeling is what causes them to hold back, since the sensation can be confusing or anxiety-inducing if you don’t know what’s happening. Understanding that this urge is part of the process, not a sign that something is wrong, is one of the most practically useful things to know about squirting.

How Common Is It

Estimates range dramatically depending on how the question is asked. In one population-based survey of 233 women, 54% reported a spurt of fluid at orgasm. A larger mail survey of over 1,100 women found about 40% identified as having experienced ejaculation. On the low end, one study of 300 women found only about 5% ejaculated. The wide range likely reflects differences in how researchers defined the phenomenon, how comfortable participants felt reporting it, and whether they were distinguishing between the small ejaculate and the larger squirting gush.

The variation in Skene’s gland size from person to person also plays a role. Women with larger glands may produce more noticeable fluid. Some women may ejaculate small amounts that go unnoticed during sex. And some may simply not experience it at all, which is equally normal.

Why “It’s Just Pee” Misses the Point

The most persistent misconception about squirting is that it’s simply urination. This view persists because the fluid does pass through the urethra, the bladder is involved, and the chemical profile shares some overlap with urine. But research consistently shows that squirting fluid contains lower concentrations of the waste products found in urine, along with PSA, glucose, and fructose from the Skene’s glands. It’s a fluid that originates from multiple sources and has a composition distinct from what the bladder normally produces.

The International Society for Sexual Medicine describes squirting as a clear liquid similar to water, containing lower concentrations of uric acid, urea, and creatinine than urine, mixed with small amounts of prostatic secretions. Reducing it to “just pee” ignores the glandular contribution and the unique physiology behind it. It can also cause unnecessary shame for women who experience it, turning a normal sexual response into something that feels embarrassing.

Squirting is a physiological event with real anatomical origins. Whether it happens to you or not carries no implications about health, sexual function, or normalcy. It’s simply one of the ways the body can respond to arousal.
