Super Creatine is a trademarked ingredient found in Bang Energy drinks. Despite the name, it is not actually creatine. It’s a different compound called creatyl-L-leucine, which bonds creatine to the amino acid leucine. The name led to a high-profile lawsuit, a jury verdict finding it misleading, and a court order banning Bang from using the term in its marketing.

How Super Creatine Differs From Creatine

Standard creatine monohydrate is one of the most studied sports supplements in the world. It works by increasing your muscles’ stores of a quick energy molecule called phosphocreatine, which helps with short, intense efforts like sprinting or heavy lifting. Typical effective doses range from 3 to 5 grams per day.

Creatyl-L-leucine, the compound marketed as Super Creatine, is chemically distinct. It was originally developed to solve a practical problem: creatine monohydrate is stable as a powder but breaks down when dissolved in liquid, especially over time and at varying temperatures. That instability makes it difficult to add real creatine to a ready-to-drink beverage and have it survive months on a shelf. By bonding creatine to leucine, the makers created a compound that could remain stable in a canned drink.

The critical question is whether your body can actually extract usable creatine from this bonded compound once you drink it. Research published in the National Institutes of Health’s PubMed Central tested exactly that. The result: creatyl-L-leucine supplementation produced no buildup of either the compound itself or free creatine in muscle, brain, or blood plasma. In other words, your body doesn’t appear to break it apart and use the creatine portion the way it would with standard creatine monohydrate.

How Much Is in a Can of Bang

Bang Energy never disclosed the exact amount of Super Creatine per can on its label, but analysis of the ingredient list placement (ingredients are listed by weight) suggests roughly 5 milligrams per serving. For context, an effective daily dose of regular creatine monohydrate is 3,000 to 5,000 milligrams. Even if creatyl-L-leucine did deliver usable creatine to your muscles, the amount in a single can would be roughly one-thousandth of a standard dose.

The Lawsuit That Ended Super Creatine

Monster Energy sued Bang Energy and its founder Jack Owoc over the Super Creatine branding, arguing it misled consumers into believing they were getting actual creatine. The case went further than just the name. Monster presented evidence that Owoc had promoted Bang as a “miracle drink” capable of reversing cognitive decline and helping cure neurological disorders, none of which was supported by clinical evidence.

In September 2022, a jury sided with Monster, agreeing that Bang’s ingredients do not include any actual creatine and that the labeling misled customers about the drink’s benefits. U.S. District Judge Jesus Bernal then issued a permanent injunction requiring Bang and Owoc to stop using “Super Creatine” in all marketing, take down related advertisements, and issue corrective public statements. The judge found the injunction necessary because Monster was losing prospective customers and market share due to the misleading claims.

Is Creatyl-L-Leucine Safe?

Separate from the question of whether it works, creatyl-L-leucine does appear to be safe at the amounts found in energy drinks. Toxicology testing found no evidence of genetic damage in lab tests, and a 90-day study in rats showed no toxic effects even at extremely high doses (5,000 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, which is the highest dose tested). For a 150-pound person, that would be the equivalent of roughly 340 grams daily, an amount no one would ever consume through beverages.

The compound passed standard safety benchmarks for a food additive. But passing safety testing is a much lower bar than demonstrating that a supplement actually does what the label implies. A substance can be harmless and still be useless as a source of creatine.

What This Means if You Want Creatine

If you’re looking for the muscle and performance benefits associated with creatine, Super Creatine in an energy drink won’t deliver them. The compound doesn’t appear to provide bioavailable creatine to your tissues, and the dose per can is negligible regardless. Plain creatine monohydrate powder remains the most researched, most effective, and least expensive form. It costs a few cents per serving, mixes into water or a shake, and has decades of safety data behind it. The only real inconvenience is that you can’t premix it into a shelf-stable drink, which is the exact problem Super Creatine was designed to solve but failed to solve in any meaningful way for your body.
