What Is the Average Body Fat Percentage by Age?

The average body fat percentage for American adults falls between about 23% and 31% for men and 32% and 42% for women, depending on age. These numbers come from a CDC analysis of over 22,000 people using DXA scans, which are considered one of the most accurate ways to measure body composition. What counts as “average,” though, isn’t necessarily what counts as healthy, and understanding the difference matters.

Average Body Fat by Age and Sex

Women carry more body fat than men at every age. The gap starts small in childhood (about 4 percentage points between boys and girls aged 8 to 11) and widens to around 12 percentage points by the late teens. This isn’t a fitness issue. It reflects biological differences in how male and female bodies store and use fat.

For men, mean body fat ranges from 22.9% in the 16 to 19 age group up to 30.9% between ages 60 and 79. For women, the range runs from about 32% in younger groups to 42.4% in the 60 to 79 bracket. Body fat increases steadily after age 30, and older adults may carry nearly a third more fat than they did when younger, even if their weight on the scale hasn’t changed much. That’s because muscle tissue gradually decreases with age, and fat tends to replace it.

Healthy Ranges vs. Population Averages

The numbers above reflect what’s typical across the U.S. population, not what’s optimal for health. A widely used classification system breaks body fat into five categories:

  • Essential fat: 3–5% for men, 9–11% for women
  • Athletes: 6–13% for men, 12–19% for women
  • Fitness: 14–17% for men, 20–24% for women
  • Acceptable: 18–24% for men, 25–29% for women
  • Obese: 25%+ for men, 30%+ for women

Notice the disconnect: the average American man in his 40s or 50s falls right around the border of “acceptable” and “obese” on this scale, and the average woman in the same age range lands solidly in the obese category by body fat standards. This doesn’t mean every person at those levels has a health problem, but it does reflect how far population norms have shifted from the ranges associated with lower disease risk.

Why Women Carry More Fat

The minimum fat a man’s body needs to function normally is around 3%. For women, it’s about 12%. That difference exists because women store fat in the breasts, uterus, and other sex-specific sites that play roles in hormone production and reproductive health. Dropping below essential fat levels disrupts menstrual cycles, weakens bones, and compromises immune function in women. In men, extremely low body fat interferes with testosterone production and energy regulation. These essential fat thresholds aren’t fitness goals. They’re biological floors.

Where Fat Sits Matters Too

Two people with identical body fat percentages can have very different health profiles depending on where that fat is stored. Fat just under the skin (the kind you can pinch) is far less dangerous than fat packed around the organs in your abdomen. This deeper fat, called visceral fat, should make up only about 10% of your total body fat. When it exceeds that proportion, it’s linked to higher rates of insulin resistance, heart disease, and metabolic problems.

You can get a rough sense of your visceral fat level by measuring your waist circumference, though imaging scans provide a more precise picture. People who carry weight around their midsection tend to have more visceral fat than those who carry it in their hips and thighs, regardless of total body fat percentage.

How Body Fat Changes With Age

After age 30, body fat tends to climb even in people who maintain the same weight and activity level. The reason is a gradual loss of muscle mass, sometimes called sarcopenia. Muscle is denser and more metabolically active than fat, so as you lose it, your body’s energy needs drop, and fat accumulates more easily. The shift is slow, typically a few percentage points per decade, but it compounds over time. By your 60s and 70s, the average body fat percentage is roughly 8 to 10 percentage points higher than it was in your late teens.

Resistance training slows this process significantly. Maintaining or building muscle keeps your resting metabolic rate higher and helps preserve the ratio of lean tissue to fat, even as the underlying biology of aging pushes in the other direction.

How Body Fat Is Measured

The gold standard for measuring body fat is a DXA scan (the same type of scan used to check bone density). It’s accurate, reproducible, and gives a detailed breakdown of fat, muscle, and bone by body region. The downside is cost and access, since it requires a clinical visit.

Bioelectrical impedance scales, the kind you can buy for home use, send a small electrical current through your body and estimate fat based on how quickly it travels. These are convenient but can swing by several percentage points depending on hydration, recent meals, and time of day. Skinfold calipers, used by trainers and in some clinical settings, measure the thickness of fat folds at specific body sites. Their accuracy depends heavily on the skill of the person taking the measurements.

No consumer method is perfectly precise. The value of any measurement tool comes from tracking trends over time rather than fixating on a single reading. If you measure under consistent conditions (same time of day, same hydration status), even a less accurate tool can reliably show whether your body fat is trending up, down, or holding steady.
