The average resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). This is measured while you’re awake, calm, and not moving. Where you land within that range depends on your age, fitness level, sex, and what’s happening in your body at the moment.
Normal Ranges by Age
Hearts beat faster in childhood and gradually slow as the body grows. Newborns up to 3 months old have an awake heart rate of 85 to 205 bpm, which drops to 80 to 160 during sleep. From 3 months to 2 years, the awake range is 100 to 190 bpm. Between ages 2 and 10, children settle into a range of 60 to 140 bpm while awake and 60 to 90 during sleep.
By age 10, heart rate reaches roughly the same range it will stay at through adulthood: 60 to 100 bpm while awake. That range holds through your 20s, 40s, 60s, and beyond. Aging does affect heart rate variability (how much the interval between beats fluctuates), but the standard 60 to 100 window remains the clinical benchmark for adults of all ages.
How Fitness Lowers Your Heart Rate
A well-conditioned heart pumps more blood with each beat, so it doesn’t need to beat as often. Athletes and highly active people can have resting rates as low as 40 bpm without any cause for concern. A lower resting heart rate generally signals that your heart muscle is in better condition and doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain circulation.
This is why a rate below 60 bpm isn’t automatically a problem. If you exercise regularly and feel fine, a pulse in the 50s (or even 40s) is a sign of cardiovascular efficiency, not disease. The key distinction is whether a low rate comes with symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, or fainting.
Differences Between Men and Women
Women tend to have a slightly faster resting heart rate than men at every age. Data from the National Health Examination Survey found the gap ranges from about 6 to 14 beats per minute after accounting for other variables like blood pressure and body size. The difference is partly due to heart size: a smaller heart holds less blood per beat, so it compensates by beating more frequently. Both sexes still fall within the same 60 to 100 bpm normal range, but women are more likely to sit in the upper portion of it.
When Heart Rate Falls Outside the Normal Range
A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. It’s common for your heart rate to rise temporarily during exercise, stress, or illness, and that’s not the same thing. Persistent tachycardia at rest, however, can strain the heart over time. Symptoms are uncommon when the rate stays below about 150 bpm in someone with a healthy heart, but people with existing heart conditions may notice problems at lower rates.
A resting rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. Many people with bradycardia, especially fit individuals, have no symptoms at all. It only becomes a concern when it causes lightheadedness, confusion, chest pain, fainting, or unusual fatigue. If you’re not particularly active and your pulse regularly dips below 60, it’s worth bringing up with a doctor.
What Temporarily Raises Your Heart Rate
Plenty of everyday factors push your heart rate above its true baseline. Caffeine, stress, and fever are the most common culprits. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances (low potassium, sodium, calcium, or magnesium) also make the heart beat faster because the blood volume or electrical signaling changes. Excessive alcohol use and alcohol withdrawal both elevate heart rate, sometimes significantly. Even standing up quickly after lying down can spike your pulse by 10 to 20 beats for a few seconds.
This is why measuring your resting heart rate accurately matters. For the most reliable reading, sit or lie down for at least five minutes before checking. Take the measurement in the morning before caffeine, exercise, or stressful situations. You can feel your pulse at your wrist (on the thumb side) or along the side of your neck, count the beats for 30 seconds, and multiply by two.
What Your Resting Heart Rate Tells You
Your resting heart rate is one of the simplest indicators of cardiovascular fitness. Tracking it over weeks or months gives you a useful trend line. If your rate gradually decreases as you become more active, your heart is getting more efficient. If it creeps upward without an obvious explanation like illness or increased stress, that can signal overtraining, poor sleep, dehydration, or an underlying health change worth investigating.
A single reading doesn’t tell you much. What matters is the pattern. Checking your pulse a few times per week under the same conditions (morning, rested, before coffee) gives you a personal baseline that’s far more useful than any single number on a chart.
