The average testosterone level for an adult male falls within a range of roughly 300 to 800 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter), though reference ranges vary by lab. Cleveland Clinic lists the normal range for men aged 18 to 99 as 193 to 824 ng/dL. Where you land in that range depends heavily on your age, the time of day your blood is drawn, and the specific lab processing your sample.
Normal Ranges by Age
Testosterone peaks in your late teens and early twenties, then gradually declines. The average drop is about 1% per year after age 30. That slow slide means a 25-year-old and a 65-year-old can both have “normal” levels while being hundreds of points apart on a blood test.
Labcorp provides age-specific reference ranges that illustrate this shift:

When your doctor orders a testosterone test, the default result is total testosterone. This measures all the testosterone circulating in your blood, including the portion bound to proteins. Most of your testosterone is attached to a protein called sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), with a smaller fraction bound to albumin. Only a tiny slice circulates freely, and that unbound portion is the one your body can actually use.
Free testosterone has its own reference range. The Endocrine Society uses a normal range of 50 to 200 pg/mL (picograms per milliliter) for calculated free testosterone in men. Someone with a total testosterone that looks borderline could still have healthy free testosterone, or vice versa. If your total level comes back in a gray zone, your provider will often order a free testosterone test to get a clearer picture.
Why Your Results Can Fluctuate
Testosterone isn’t a fixed number. It changes throughout the day, with levels highest in the morning and dipping modestly by evening. This is why blood draws are typically scheduled early in the day. A test taken at 4 p.m. could read noticeably lower than one drawn at 8 a.m., even though nothing about your health has changed.
Fasting can also matter. Some providers will ask you to skip food and drinks (other than water) for several hours before the test. Eating a large meal can temporarily affect hormone levels and other blood markers, which may skew results. Beyond timing and food, short-term factors like poor sleep, heavy alcohol use, acute illness, and intense physical stress can all push your testosterone reading lower on a given day. That’s why clinical guidelines call for at least two separate morning blood draws before drawing any conclusions about low testosterone.
What Counts as Low Testosterone

Their guideline uses a reference floor of 270 ng/dL for total testosterone, though labs vary. Cleveland Clinic’s range starts at 193 ng/dL. The number your doctor uses depends on the assay and reference intervals at the specific lab running your sample.
This lab-to-lab variability is a real issue. The CDC runs a hormone standardization program that works with clinical and research laboratories to improve the accuracy and consistency of testosterone measurements, but there is no single universal cutoff that every lab agrees on. If you’re comparing results from two different labs, the raw numbers may not be directly comparable.
Symptoms matter as much as the number. Common signs of clinically low testosterone include persistent fatigue, reduced sex drive, difficulty maintaining erections, loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, and mood changes like irritability or depression. A man with a total testosterone of 280 ng/dL and no symptoms is in a very different situation from a man at 280 ng/dL who is experiencing several of these problems.
What Affects Your Baseline Level
Age is the biggest factor, but it’s far from the only one. Body composition plays a significant role. Excess body fat, particularly around the midsection, increases the conversion of testosterone to estrogen and raises SHBG levels, both of which can lower free testosterone. Losing weight often raises testosterone measurably in men who are overweight.
Sleep is another major lever. Testosterone production ramps up during deep sleep, and men who consistently get fewer than five or six hours a night tend to show lower levels. Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, which suppresses testosterone production over time. Certain medications, including opioids and some corticosteroids, can also lower levels significantly.
On the flip side, regular resistance training, adequate sleep, a balanced diet with sufficient zinc and vitamin D, and maintaining a healthy weight all support testosterone production. These factors won’t turn a clinically low level into a high one, but they can move the needle for men sitting in the lower-normal range.
