The best electrolyte drink depends on what you’re using it for. For everyday hydration after moderate exercise, milk actually outperforms most commercial sports drinks. For heavy sweating during endurance sports, a drink with higher sodium and some glucose (like Pedialyte Sport or a similar oral rehydration solution) rehydrates faster and more completely. Obviously, milk isn’t practical mid-run or in extreme heat. But for general rehydration after a workout or on a hot day, it’s remarkably effective and cheaper than any commercial electrolyte product.
Coconut Water: High Potassium, Low Sodium

A study published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living compared three oral rehydration solutions after exercise-induced dehydration of about 2.6% body mass. The two formulas containing glucose produced significantly less urine output (485 ml and 542 ml over five hours) compared to the zero-sugar version (779 ml). The glucose-containing drinks also restored fluid balance faster.
The reason is biological: sodium and glucose are absorbed together through a specific transport mechanism in your small intestine. When glucose is present, your gut pulls in sodium more efficiently, and water follows. The zero-sugar formula in the study had sodium concentrations similar to drinks that show no measurable benefit over plain water in other research.
This doesn’t mean you need a sugary drink every time. For everyday hydration, sugar-free options or plain water are perfectly fine. But if you’re genuinely dehydrated from exercise, illness, or heat exposure, a formula with some glucose will rehydrate you meaningfully faster.

For light to moderate exercise under an hour, water is sufficient for most people. Your body has enough electrolyte reserves to handle short bouts of activity without supplementation.
