For most begonias, a balanced formula, such as a 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 blend, provides a foundation for general growth. Flowering varieties benefit from a formula with a higher concentration of phosphorus, such as a 15-30-15 ratio, to encourage more blossoms. Begonias also require micronutrients like magnesium and calcium for metabolic functions and to prevent issues like tip burn and leaf discoloration. Magnesium is a component of the chlorophyll molecule involved in photosynthesis; a deficiency can manifest as yellowing between the leaf veins.
Selecting the Fertilizer Format
The choice of fertilizer format depends on the begonia’s location and the gardener’s preferred maintenance schedule. Water-soluble liquid fertilizers are favored for potted begonias, delivering nutrients immediately to the root zone and allowing precise control over feeding. This format is fast-acting, but nutrients leach out quickly from the potting mix, necessitating more frequent application.
Slow-release granular fertilizers offer convenience, providing a steady supply of nutrients over several months from a single application. This type is well-suited for begonias planted in garden beds or larger containers that are not watered as frequently, and the controlled release minimizes the risk of over-fertilization. Organic options, such as fish emulsion or compost tea, provide a gentler, slower release of nutrients and contribute to improving the soil’s long-term structure and microbial health. Cease all fertilization in late fall, generally around October, as the plant’s growth naturally slows in preparation for winter. Tuberous begonia varieties, which enter dormancy, should receive no fertilizer during this rest period, as excess nutrients can cause root damage.
Application Methods and Avoiding Root Burn
The most common cause of damage from fertilization is fertilizer burn, which occurs when high concentrations of soluble salts draw moisture out of the plant’s roots. To prevent this, liquid fertilizers should be diluted to half or even quarter strength of the manufacturer’s recommended dosage, especially for container plants. Before any fertilizer application, water the begonia thoroughly with plain water until the soil is evenly moist.
This pre-watering ensures the roots are hydrated and prevents the sudden uptake of concentrated salts when the fertilizer solution is applied. Signs of over-fertilization include crispy, brown leaf margins, indicating dehydration, or a white, crusty accumulation on the soil surface, which is a build-up of excess salts. If these signs appear, the soil should be “flushed” by slowly pouring a large volume of plain water through the container multiple times, allowing the water to drain completely to wash away the accumulated salts.
