Nitrogen primarily supports vegetative growth, driving the development of strong stems and lush, green foliage, which is necessary for photosynthesis. Potassium influences water regulation, increases the plant’s resistance to certain diseases, and is directly responsible for improving fruit size, pulp thickness, and sugar content. A commonly recommended annual NPK ratio for a mature, productive papaya tree is approximately 1:1:2. This high demand reflects its role in moving sugars from the leaves to the developing fruit.

Applying Fertilizer Based on Tree Age

The frequency and composition of fertilizer applications must shift dramatically as the papaya tree progresses through its life stages. Young plants, or seedlings, are shallow-rooted and highly susceptible to fertilizer burn, necessitating low-dose, frequent applications. A balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 or 14-14-14, applied every two to four weeks at a rate of a few ounces per tree, is appropriate for the first few months.
