What Is the Best Supplement for Hair Growth?

There is no single “best” supplement for hair growth that works for everyone. The supplements that actually help are the ones that correct a specific deficiency your body already has. If your iron, vitamin D, or zinc levels are low, restoring them can meaningfully improve hair density. If your levels are already normal, adding more through supplements is unlikely to make a difference.

That distinction matters because the supplement industry markets hair growth products as if they work universally. The reality is more targeted: figure out what your body is missing, fix that, and give it three to six months.

Why Deficiency Matters More Than the Supplement

Hair follicles are among the most metabolically active structures in your body. They cycle through growth, rest, and shedding phases continuously, and that process demands a steady supply of nutrients. When your body runs low on something essential, hair is one of the first things it deprioritizes. Your body redirects limited resources toward vital organs, and your hair thins as a result.

This is why supplementation works so well for people with deficiencies and so poorly for people without them. You’re not turbocharging growth; you’re removing a bottleneck. The most common nutritional bottlenecks behind hair loss are iron, vitamin D, zinc, and B vitamins.

Iron: The Most Common Nutritional Cause

Low iron is one of the most frequently identified nutritional contributors to hair shedding, particularly in women. A case-control study of women aged 15 to 45 found that those experiencing excessive shedding had an average ferritin level (your body’s stored iron) of 16.3 ng/mL, compared to 60.3 ng/mL in women without hair loss. The tricky part is that standard blood tests might flag your iron as “normal” even when your ferritin is low enough to affect your hair. If you’re experiencing diffuse thinning or increased shedding, it’s worth asking specifically about your ferritin level rather than just a basic iron panel. That said, the evidence that iron supplementation visibly improves hair density (as opposed to stopping further loss) is still somewhat mixed, so expectations should be realistic.

Vitamin D and Hair Follicle Function

Vitamin D plays a specific, well-documented role in the hair growth cycle. Your hair follicles contain stem cells in a region called the bulge, and these stem cells rely on vitamin D receptor activation to function properly. Without adequate vitamin D signaling, these stem cells lose their ability to initiate new growth cycles. Animal studies show that vitamin D receptor activation is critical for triggering the active growth phase of hair, and that loss of this signaling results in hair follicles that simply stop cycling.

Vitamin D deficiency is remarkably common. Estimates suggest that roughly 35% of adults in the U.S. have insufficient levels. If you spend most of your time indoors, live at a northern latitude, or have darker skin, your risk is higher. A simple blood test can confirm your levels, and supplementation is straightforward if you’re low.

Zinc’s Role in Hair Protein Production

Zinc is essential for the protein synthesis that builds hair strands. When zinc levels drop, hair can become brittle, thin, and slow to grow. In a clinical study of people with patchy hair loss who also had low zinc levels, supplementation with 50 mg of zinc gluconate daily for twelve weeks led to measurable improvement. Zinc levels normalized, and hair regrowth followed.

Zinc deficiency is less common in the general population than iron or vitamin D deficiency, but it’s more likely if you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, have digestive conditions that impair absorption, or drink alcohol heavily. One important caution: zinc supplementation at high doses over long periods can deplete copper, creating a new problem. If you suspect low zinc, testing is a better starting point than guessing.

Biotin: Popular but Overhyped

Biotin is by far the most marketed hair supplement, yet the clinical evidence behind it is surprisingly thin. Only one clinical trial has directly tested biotin for common hair loss. That study did show some improvement in hair density and reduced shedding, but it was small, conducted at a single institution, and relied heavily on participants rating their own results rather than objective measurements.

The American Academy of Dermatology has stated that biotin should not be used as a primary treatment for hair regrowth. For people with a confirmed biotin deficiency (which is rare), supplementation helps. For everyone else, there’s little reason to expect results.

Biotin supplements also carry a less obvious risk. The FDA has warned that biotin can significantly interfere with certain lab tests, producing incorrect results that may go undetected. This includes troponin tests used to diagnose heart attacks and thyroid panels. If you’re taking high-dose biotin and need blood work, your doctor needs to know, because a falsely normal or falsely abnormal result could lead to a missed diagnosis or unnecessary treatment.

Saw Palmetto for Hormonal Hair Loss

If your hair loss follows the classic pattern of thinning at the crown or a receding hairline, the cause is likely hormonal rather than nutritional. A hormone called DHT shrinks hair follicles over time in people who are genetically sensitive to it. Saw palmetto, a plant extract, partially blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT.

The evidence is modest. In one study, nearly half of the 25 male participants using a topical formula containing saw palmetto increased their hair count by about 12% after four months. That’s a meaningful change, but the study was small and the formula contained other active ingredients, making it hard to isolate saw palmetto’s contribution. It’s a reasonable option to try, particularly for men, but it works through a completely different mechanism than nutrient supplementation and won’t help if a deficiency is the underlying issue.

Supplements That Can Backfire

More is not better when it comes to hair supplements. Some nutrients that support hair at normal levels actively cause hair loss at high doses.

  • Selenium is needed in tiny amounts (50 to 200 micrograms per day is considered the adequate range for adults). At toxic levels, it causes dramatic shedding. A CDC report documented a case where a contaminated selenium supplement caused near-total scalp hair loss within two months. Villages in China with extremely high dietary selenium intake showed widespread hair and nail loss.
  • Vitamin A at excessive doses can trigger hair shedding by disrupting the normal growth cycle. Many hair supplement formulas contain vitamin A, so if you’re already getting enough from your diet, stacking a supplement on top can push you past a helpful range.

This is one of the strongest arguments for testing before supplementing. Taking a multi-ingredient hair supplement without knowing your baseline levels means you might be overdosing on something you don’t need while still missing the nutrient you’re actually low in.

How Long Before You See Results

Hair grows slowly, roughly half an inch per month. Even after you correct a deficiency, new growth has to physically push its way out and reach a visible length. Most people notice improvements in hair density and growth rate between three and six months of consistent supplementation. Changes in shedding and hair strength often show up earlier, sometimes within the first two to three months, but visible fullness takes longer.

If you’ve been supplementing for six months with no change, the cause of your hair loss likely isn’t nutritional. Hormonal factors, autoimmune conditions, thyroid dysfunction, and stress-related shedding all cause hair loss that won’t respond to vitamins and minerals. At that point, further investigation with a dermatologist is the next step.

A Practical Starting Point

The most effective approach is to get blood work that includes ferritin, vitamin D, zinc, and thyroid function. This gives you a clear picture of what, if anything, needs correcting. From there, targeted supplementation at appropriate doses will do more than any all-in-one hair vitamin ever could.

If testing isn’t immediately accessible and you want to start somewhere, vitamin D is the safest general bet given how widespread deficiency is and how directly it affects follicle cycling. A standard daily dose of 1,000 to 2,000 IU is well within safe limits for most adults and addresses the single most common gap.
