What Is the Experimental Group? Definition & Examples

The experimental group is the set of participants in a study that receives the treatment, intervention, or condition being tested. It exists so researchers can measure what actually happens when they change one specific thing, then compare those results to a group that didn’t receive that change. Without an experimental group, there’s no way to tell whether a treatment works or whether any observed changes happened by coincidence.

How the Experimental Group Works

Every experiment revolves around one core question: does changing something produce a different outcome? The “something” being changed is called the independent variable, and the experimental group is the group exposed to it. The outcome researchers measure afterward is the dependent variable.

Say researchers want to know if a walking program improves brain function in older adults. They recruit participants and split them into two groups. The experimental group begins a structured routine of walking and virtual strength-training classes. The control group is asked to keep living as they normally do, exercising less than 90 minutes per week. Both groups take the same cognitive and fitness tests at the start and end of the study. If the experimental group scores meaningfully better on those tests, the walking program is the likely reason.

The experimental group doesn’t have to involve a new drug or a physical intervention. It can receive a behavior change program, a counseling method, an educational curriculum, a medical device, or even a different diet. What matters is that the group experiences something specific and measurable that the control group does not.

Experimental Group vs. Control Group

The control group is the experimental group’s mirror image. It receives either no treatment, a placebo, or the current standard treatment. Its purpose is to serve as a baseline so researchers can isolate the effect of whatever the experimental group received.

In clinical drug trials, the control group often gets a sugar pill or saline injection that looks identical to the real treatment. In behavioral studies, the control group might simply continue their daily routine. The key rule is that everything about both groups should be identical except for the one variable being tested. Same testing schedule, same check-ins, same environment. That way, any difference in results can be traced back to the intervention itself rather than some unrelated factor.

Some studies use more complex designs. A trial might compare a new therapy plus standard care against standard care alone, so both groups get baseline treatment but only the experimental group gets the added intervention. Other studies pit two active treatments against each other, with no true “no treatment” group at all. In one substance abuse trial, for instance, researchers compared a family therapy approach against standard community treatment across eight different sites, randomly assigning 480 adolescents to one group or the other.

Why Random Assignment Matters

The most important step in setting up an experimental group is random assignment. This means each participant has an equal chance of landing in either the experimental or control group, determined by something as simple as a coin flip or a computer-generated sequence. Neither the researcher nor the participant gets to choose.

Random assignment exists to even the playing field. Without it, the groups might differ in ways that skew the results. Imagine a fitness study where the most motivated volunteers all end up in the experimental group. Any improvement might reflect their motivation, not the exercise program. Randomization spreads characteristics like age, health status, motivation, and even unknown factors roughly equally across both groups. If the groups are equivalent at the start, researchers can be far more confident that any difference at the end came from the treatment.

Controlling for Outside Influences

Even with randomization, outside factors called confounding variables can creep in and muddy the results. A confounding variable is anything other than the treatment that might explain the outcome. If the experimental group happens to include more younger participants, and younger people naturally perform better on the test being measured, age becomes a confounder.

Researchers handle this in several ways during study design. Restriction limits who can participate, for example enrolling only women aged 40 to 50, so age and sex can’t distort the findings. Matching pairs participants with similar profiles and places one in each group. Randomization itself is the broadest tool, because it distributes both known and unknown confounders across groups without the researcher needing to identify every one of them in advance.

When confounders can’t be eliminated by design, researchers control for them during analysis using statistical techniques that essentially hold those variables constant while examining the relationship between treatment and outcome.

How Researchers Measure the Effect

Once the study ends, researchers compare the experimental group’s results to the control group’s results. The size of the difference between them is called the effect size, and it’s what tells you whether the treatment made a meaningful impact rather than just a tiny, statistically negligible one.

Before a study even begins, researchers calculate how many participants they need to detect a real effect. This process is called a power analysis. Most studies aim for 80% statistical power, meaning there’s an 80% chance the study will detect a true effect if one exists. The standard threshold for declaring a result “statistically significant” is a 5% probability that it occurred by chance alone. Smaller expected effects require larger groups to detect reliably, which is why some clinical trials enroll hundreds or thousands of participants while a lab experiment might need only a few dozen.

A Simple Example to Tie It Together

Suppose a university wants to test whether a new tutoring method improves exam scores. Researchers recruit 200 students and randomly assign 100 to the experimental group (which uses the new tutoring method for eight weeks) and 100 to the control group (which uses the school’s existing tutoring resources). Both groups take the same exam at the end.

If the experimental group scores an average of 12 points higher and the statistical analysis confirms this difference is unlikely to be due to chance, the researchers can reasonably conclude the new method works. The experimental group made that conclusion possible by isolating the one thing that changed: the tutoring approach.

Ethical Protections for Participants

Because experimental group members are exposed to something new and unproven, studies involving human participants must be reviewed and approved by an institutional review board (IRB) before they begin. The IRB’s job is to ensure that physical and psychological risks are minimized, that participants give informed consent, and that the potential benefits justify any risks involved. Approved studies are then subject to ongoing oversight and must be reapproved at least once a year.

These protections also shape what kinds of experimental groups are possible. Researchers can’t deliberately expose people to something harmful just to study its effects. If they want to study whether pollution increases asthma rates in children, for example, they can’t randomly assign kids to breathe exhaust fumes. Instead, they rely on natural experiments, comparing populations that already experience different pollution levels due to where they live.
