The first sign of cataracts is usually a slight cloudiness or blurriness in your vision, often so subtle you barely notice it. At first, the clouding affects only a small part of the eye’s lens, so vision loss is minimal. Many people describe the early sensation as looking at the world through a dirty window. Because cataracts develop slowly, this initial haziness can go undetected for months or even years before it starts interfering with daily life.

How Early Symptoms Show Up

The clouding happens because proteins inside the lens gradually clump together into larger clusters that scatter light instead of letting it pass through cleanly. Over time, UV exposure, oxidation, and other forms of cellular wear break down the normally transparent lens proteins, causing them to misfold and aggregate. This process is why cataracts are so strongly tied to aging: the damage accumulates over decades.

Because the clouded area starts small, you might first notice it only in specific situations. Needing a brighter lamp to read comfortably, or finding that your current glasses prescription suddenly isn’t working as well, are common early clues. Frequent prescription changes in a short period can be one of the more telling early signals, since the shape and clarity of the lens are shifting as the cataract grows.

Night Vision and Light Sensitivity

For many people, trouble with lights is the symptom that actually gets their attention. You may start seeing halos or starbursts around headlights and streetlights at night, or feel blinded by oncoming traffic in a way you never did before. Night driving can begin to feel genuinely unsafe. Glare from bright sunlight or overhead lamps may also become uncomfortable during the day.

These light-related symptoms happen because the clumped proteins in the lens scatter incoming light in unpredictable directions rather than focusing it neatly on the retina. One type of cataract, called a posterior subcapsular cataract, is especially prone to causing glare in bright conditions. When bright light causes your pupil to constrict, it forces light through the clouded area, making the blur worse rather than better.

Color Changes and Double Vision

A symptom that often sneaks up on people is a gradual shift in how colors look. Whites may take on a yellowish or brownish tint, and colors overall can appear faded or washed out. This change is so gradual that many people don’t realize it happened until after cataract surgery, when they’re startled by how vivid the world looks again.

Double vision in a single eye is another possible early sign. Unlike the double vision caused by eye alignment problems, cataract-related double vision persists even when you close the other eye. Cataracts vs. Normal Age-Related Vision Loss

It’s easy to confuse early cataracts with presbyopia, the normal loss of close-up focusing ability that starts around age 40. The two conditions overlap in timing and can feel similar at first, but they behave differently in ways you can actually test yourself.

Presbyopia affects close-up vision only. Distance vision stays clear, both eyes are affected equally, reading glasses fix the problem reliably, and you don’t experience glare, halos, or color changes. Cataracts blur vision at all distances, often affect one eye more than the other, and cause glasses to stop working well over time as the lens continues to cloud.

One practical distinction: with cataracts, adding more light genuinely helps you see better for tasks like reading, because the extra light compensates for the clouded lens. With presbyopia, more light doesn’t really solve the problem. You still need magnification. If you find yourself constantly reaching for a brighter lamp and it actually makes a difference, cataracts may be the reason.

When Cataracts Typically Develop

Lens changes can begin as early as your 40s, but cataracts usually don’t cause noticeable symptoms until your 60s or 70s. The progression varies widely. Some people live with mild cataracts for years without significant impairment, while others experience faster clouding that affects daily activities within a few years of the first symptoms.

Cataracts often develop at different rates in each eye, so you might notice symptoms in one eye well before the other. This uneven progression is one more feature that distinguishes cataracts from presbyopia, which tends to affect both eyes symmetrically.

Before this exam, you’ll typically receive eye drops to dilate your pupils, giving a clearer view of the lens and the structures behind it.

You’ll also read an eye chart to measure your visual acuity, and you may be asked to fill out a questionnaire about how your vision affects everyday tasks like driving, reading, and recognizing faces. That questionnaire matters more than you might expect. Cataract treatment decisions are based largely on how much the cataract interferes with your life, not just how it looks under the microscope.
