Your temperature stays elevated throughout the luteal phase and drops again when your period starts. By charting this shift over a few cycles, you can see a clear pattern that marks where ovulation occurred and how long your luteal phase runs.

What a Short Luteal Phase Means
A luteal phase shorter than 11 days can sometimes signal a problem called luteal phase deficiency. This happens when the corpus luteum doesn’t produce enough progesterone, or doesn’t produce it long enough, to fully prepare the uterine lining. The result is a lining that may not be thick or developed enough for a fertilized egg to implant successfully.

The uterine lining essentially starts breaking down before a fertilized egg has had enough time to implant and establish itself. The Luteal Phase and Fertility
