What Is the Most Sensitive Part of the Penis?

The corona, the ridge where the head of the penis meets the shaft, is the area most commonly reported as the most pleasurable and sensitive part of the penis. In a study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine that mapped erogenous sensation across the entire penis, 74% of circumcised men and 72% of uncircumcised men selected the corona as the region yielding the most pleasure during sex. It also received the highest average pleasure ratings of any penile region in both groups.

Why the Corona Stands Out

The corona (sometimes called the coronal ridge or glans corona) is the slightly raised rim that circles the base of the glans, or head, of the penis. It’s a transition zone between the smoother skin of the shaft and the mucosal tissue of the glans, and this anatomy matters. Specialized sensory structures, including Pacinian corpuscles (which detect pressure and vibration) and Ruffini corpuscles (which detect stretching), have been identified predominantly in the corona.

The entire glans functions as a sensory end organ for sexual reflexes. During erection, the glans expands and its surface area increases, stretching the overlying tissue thinner. This stretching brings nerve receptors closer to the surface and makes them more responsive to touch. Sensory signals from the glans travel through the dorsal nerve of the penis, a branch of the pudendal nerve, up to the spinal cord and brain.

The Frenulum and Glans

The frenulum, a small V-shaped band of tissue on the underside of the penis where the glans meets the shaft, is another highly sensitive area. Many men describe it as their single most responsive spot, and it’s often highlighted in sexual health literature. In the same mapping study, the frenulum scored high for erogenous sensation, though the corona edged it out in overall pleasure ratings.

The glans itself is densely packed with free nerve endings, the simplest type of sensory receptor. These are excellent at detecting pain, temperature, and general touch, but the glans actually lacks the types of nerve endings (Meissner corpuscles and Merkel cells) that allow fingertips to detect fine textures and light pressure. This is why the glans can feel intensely stimulated, even uncomfortably so, without being particularly good at distinguishing subtle differences in touch. The sensation it produces is more diffuse and intense rather than precise.

Sensitivity Across the Entire Shaft

One of the more surprising findings from the erogenous mapping research is that men reported fairly similar sensitivity scores across the full length of the penis. The corona rated highest among circumcised men with an average pleasure score of 8.4 out of 10, while the lowest-rated area, the scrotal raphe (the seam running along the scrotum), still scored 7.3. For uncircumcised men, the corona averaged 8.8 and the lowest area scored 7.8. The differences between regions were real but not dramatic.

This challenges the common assumption that the tip of the penis is overwhelmingly more sensitive than the shaft. The shaft skin contains its own nerve endings, and the underside of the shaft in particular tends to rate well for pleasurable sensation. The base of the penis and even the scrotum contribute meaningfully to overall sexual feeling.

The Role of the Foreskin

In uncircumcised men, the foreskin adds another layer of sensory tissue. It’s a double-layered fold containing skin, mucous membrane, and muscle tissue with a high density of nerve endings. The inner surface includes a structure called the ridged band (or frenar band), a corrugated strip of tissue near the tip of the foreskin that is rich in fine-touch receptors.

A common hypothesis suggests that after circumcision, the exposed glans thickens and becomes less sensitive over time through a process called keratinization. However, a study published in The Journal of Urology that used quantitative sensory testing found no measurable difference in glans sensitivity between circumcised and intact men. The researchers noted that direct tissue biopsies would be needed to fully evaluate the keratinization question, but at the level of what men can actually feel, the glans responded similarly in both groups.

How Sensitivity Changes With Age

Penile sensitivity gradually decreases as men get older. Research pooling data from multiple studies confirmed an increasing threshold for detecting touch on the penis as a function of age, meaning it takes more stimulation to register the same sensation. This follows a curvilinear pattern, meaning the decline accelerates somewhat in later decades rather than dropping at a steady rate. The exact biological mechanisms behind this decline aren’t fully established, but it likely involves the same gradual loss of nerve receptor density and reduced nerve conduction speed that affects sensation throughout the body with aging.

Sensitivity and Ejaculation Timing

Many men assume that higher penile sensitivity leads to faster ejaculation, but research doesn’t support this connection. A study examining the relationship between measured penile sensitivity and ejaculation timing in men with normal sexual function found essentially no correlation. Sensitivity accounted for less than 8% of the variation in how long men took to ejaculate. Ejaculatory timing appears to be controlled much more by central nervous system processing, psychological factors, and individual neurology than by how sensitive the penis itself is to touch.
