The large muscle on the front of your thigh is the quadriceps femoris, usually just called the “quads.” It’s actually a group of four main muscles that work together to straighten your knee and help you walk, run, climb stairs, and stand up from a chair. The quadriceps is one of the strongest muscle groups in your body, and it covers nearly the entire front surface of your thigh from hip to kneecap.
The Four Muscles of the Quadriceps
Each of the four muscles has a slightly different position on your thigh, but they all converge into a single thick tendon that attaches to your kneecap. Together, they produce the force that straightens your leg at the knee.
Rectus femoris runs straight down the center of your thigh. It’s the most visible quad muscle and the only one that crosses both your hip joint and your knee joint. That dual role means it helps you bend at the hip (lifting your thigh toward your chest) in addition to straightening your knee. If you place your hand on the front-center of your thigh and flex, this is the muscle you feel tighten first.
Vastus lateralis sits on the outer side of your thigh, connecting your thighbone to your kneecap. It’s the largest of the four and gives the outer thigh its rounded shape. Its job is straightforward: extending the knee.
Vastus medialis runs along the inner side of your thigh. It’s the smallest of the quad muscles, and the teardrop-shaped portion just above the inner knee is often the most noticeable part. This muscle plays an important role in keeping your kneecap tracking properly as your leg bends and straightens.
Vastus intermedius lies deep in the middle of your thigh, hidden beneath the rectus femoris. You can’t see or easily feel it through the skin, but it contributes significant force to knee extension. A more recently identified fifth muscle, called the tensor of the vastus intermedius, sits between the vastus intermedius and vastus lateralis at an angle. Most anatomy references still refer to the group as four muscles, but this slender fifth one fills the space between them.
Another Muscle You Might Be Feeling
The sartorius also crosses the front of your thigh, and depending on where exactly you’re noticing tension or soreness, it could be what you’re feeling. It’s the longest muscle in the human body. It starts at the bony point on the front of your hip, then angles diagonally across your thigh toward the inner side of your knee.
Unlike the quads, the sartorius doesn’t produce powerful knee extension. Instead, it helps you bend your hip, rotate your leg outward, and flex your knee. The combination of those movements is what lets you sit cross-legged. Because it runs on a diagonal, it can sometimes be mistaken for a quad strain when it’s sore.
How the Quads Connect to Your Knee
All four quadriceps muscles merge into the quadriceps tendon, a thick band of tissue that attaches to the top of your kneecap. Below the kneecap, a second band called the patellar tendon connects the kneecap to your shinbone. These two tendons form a continuous chain that transfers the pulling force of the quads into the movement of straightening your lower leg. When people talk about “jumper’s knee” or pain just above or below the kneecap, they’re usually referring to irritation in one of these two tendons.
What Powers These Muscles
The femoral nerve controls the quadriceps. It originates from nerve roots in the lower spine, travels through your groin area alongside the femoral artery (the large blood vessel that supplies your leg), and then splits into branches. The deeper branch specifically controls the quad muscles, sending the signals that tell them to contract. The femoral artery running alongside it delivers the blood supply these large, active muscles need. If you’ve ever had your leg “go dead” from sitting in an awkward position, you were likely compressing part of this nerve pathway.
Common Quad Injuries
Quad strains are among the most frequent thigh injuries, especially in sports that involve sprinting or kicking. They’re graded by severity. A mild strain affects only a small number of muscle fibers. You might not even feel it until the next day, and you’ll still have full strength and range of motion. A moderate strain involves roughly half the muscle fibers being torn, with noticeable pain, swelling, and weakness when you try to straighten your leg. A severe strain means a complete or near-complete tear, which usually causes immediate sharp pain, significant swelling, and an inability to bear weight normally.
The rectus femoris is the most commonly strained quad muscle because it crosses two joints and absorbs force during explosive movements like sprinting and kicking. Recovery from a mild strain can take a couple of weeks, while moderate to severe strains may require several weeks to months. Returning to full activity typically means regaining full strength without pain, achieving full range of motion (being able to bend your knee to about 120 degrees with your hip extended), and being able to replicate sport-specific movements at full speed without symptoms.
Exercises That Target Each Quad Muscle
Not all exercises hit every part of the quadriceps equally. Research measuring electrical activity in each muscle during various movements has found clear differences. The Bulgarian split squat produced the highest activation of the vastus medialis (about 85% of maximum) and vastus lateralis (about 68%), making it one of the best exercises for the inner and outer quad muscles. The backward lunge was a close second for both.
The rectus femoris, on the other hand, responded best to exercises where the hips are more involved. A banded hip-extension exercise called the Russian belt produced the highest rectus femoris activation (around 50% of maximum), likely because this muscle is the only quad that also works across the hip joint. If you want balanced quad development, combining a split-stance exercise like a Bulgarian split squat with a hip-dominant movement covers all four heads more effectively than any single exercise alone.
For general strength and everyday function, squats, lunges, step-ups, and leg presses all train the quadriceps through their primary movement pattern of bending and straightening the knee under load. If you’re recovering from an injury, single-joint movements like seated leg extensions isolate the quads without demanding stability from the hip or ankle, which can be useful early in rehab before progressing to more complex movements.
