What Is the Normal Blood Glucose Range?

A normal fasting blood glucose level is 99 mg/dL or below. That single number is the most common reference point, but “normal” actually spans several measurements depending on when you last ate, whether you’re pregnant, and which test your doctor orders. Understanding where you fall on the spectrum helps you spot prediabetes early, when lifestyle changes are most effective.

Fasting Blood Glucose

A fasting blood glucose test measures your blood sugar after you haven’t eaten for at least eight hours, typically first thing in the morning. The categories break down like this:

  • Normal: 99 mg/dL or below
  • Prediabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dL
  • Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or above

A single reading of 126 mg/dL or higher doesn’t automatically mean you have diabetes. Doctors typically confirm the result with a second test on a different day. But a fasting level in the 100 to 125 range is worth paying attention to. That prediabetes window means your body is already struggling to manage glucose efficiently, and roughly 1 in 3 American adults falls into it.

After-Meal Blood Glucose

Your blood sugar naturally rises after eating, peaks about one to two hours later, then gradually returns to baseline. A glucose tolerance test captures this by measuring your blood sugar two hours after you drink a standardized sugar solution. The two-hour results fall into these categories:

  • Normal: 140 mg/dL or below
  • Prediabetes: 140 to 199 mg/dL
  • Diabetes: 200 mg/dL or above

In healthy people eating a typical meal (not a glucose test solution), blood sugar rarely exceeds 140 mg/dL and usually returns to pre-meal levels within about three hours. If you’re using a home glucose monitor and consistently seeing readings above 140 after meals, that’s a sign your body isn’t clearing sugar from the bloodstream as quickly as it should.

A1C: Your Three-Month Average

While fasting and post-meal tests give you a snapshot, the A1C test reflects your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. It works by measuring the percentage of your red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. The higher your blood sugar has been running, the higher the percentage.

  • Normal: below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

An A1C of 5.7% corresponds roughly to an average blood sugar of about 117 mg/dL. At 6.5%, the average sits around 140 mg/dL. Because A1C isn’t affected by what you ate last night or whether you skipped breakfast, many doctors prefer it as a screening tool. It can be drawn at any time of day without fasting.

Random Blood Sugar Tests

A random blood sugar test is taken at any time, regardless of when you last ate. There’s no defined “normal” or “prediabetes” range for random readings because they fluctuate so much throughout the day. The only established cutoff is 200 mg/dL or above, which, combined with symptoms like increased thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained weight loss, points to diabetes. A random reading under 200 doesn’t rule anything out on its own, which is why follow-up testing with a fasting or A1C test is standard.

Low Blood Sugar

The conversation around blood glucose usually focuses on levels being too high, but too low is also a concern. Blood sugar below 70 mg/dL is considered low, a condition called hypoglycemia. It’s most common in people taking insulin or certain diabetes medications, but it can happen in anyone after prolonged fasting, intense exercise, or excessive alcohol intake.

The symptoms come on quickly: shaking, sweating, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, sudden hunger, and difficulty thinking clearly. Most people can resolve mild episodes by eating or drinking something with fast-acting sugar, like juice or glucose tablets. Severe drops below 54 mg/dL can cause confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness and require immediate help.

Blood Glucose Ranges During Pregnancy

Pregnancy shifts the goalposts. The thresholds for gestational diabetes are tighter than the standard adult ranges because even moderately elevated blood sugar can affect fetal development. Screening typically happens between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy using a glucose tolerance test.

In the three-hour version of this test, the expected values are:

  • Fasting: 95 mg/dL or lower
  • One hour: 180 mg/dL or lower
  • Two hours: 155 mg/dL or lower
  • Three hours: 140 mg/dL or lower

Some clinicians use a shorter two-hour test instead, with slightly different cutoffs: fasting at or above 92 mg/dL, one-hour at or above 180 mg/dL, or two-hour at or above 153 mg/dL would indicate gestational diabetes. Notice how the fasting threshold drops from 99 mg/dL in the general population to 92 or 95 mg/dL during pregnancy. That narrower window reflects the stricter control needed to protect both mother and baby.

What Affects Your Reading

Blood glucose isn’t static. It shifts throughout the day based on food, activity, stress, sleep, and illness. A few practical things that can push a reading higher or lower than your true baseline:

  • The dawn phenomenon: Your liver releases stored glucose in the early morning hours, so blood sugar naturally rises between roughly 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. A fasting test taken at 6 a.m. may read slightly higher than one taken at 10 a.m.
  • Stress and illness: Hormones released during physical or emotional stress raise blood sugar. A single elevated reading while you’re sick or under intense pressure doesn’t necessarily reflect your everyday levels.
  • Caffeine: Some people see a noticeable blood sugar spike from coffee, even without added sugar. If you’re testing at home, it’s worth checking whether your morning coffee shifts your numbers.
  • Exercise timing: Moderate activity lowers blood sugar for hours afterward, while very intense exercise can temporarily raise it due to stress hormones. Testing right after a hard workout may give you a misleadingly high or low number.

If you’re monitoring at home with a fingerstick meter, keep in mind that these devices have an acceptable error margin of about 15%. A reading of 105 mg/dL could represent a true value anywhere from roughly 89 to 121. One borderline result isn’t definitive. Patterns over multiple readings tell the real story.

Prediabetes and What the Numbers Mean

The gap between normal and diabetic, the prediabetes range, is where most people have the greatest opportunity to change course. A fasting level of 100 to 125, an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4%, or a two-hour glucose tolerance result of 140 to 199 all qualify. At this stage, your body still produces insulin but your cells are becoming less responsive to it.

Losing 5% to 7% of body weight and getting about 150 minutes of moderate activity per week has been shown to cut the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes by more than half. That’s roughly 10 to 14 pounds for someone weighing 200 pounds, and about 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week. These aren’t extreme targets, and the payoff is substantial given that prediabetes progresses to type 2 diabetes in about 15% to 30% of people within five years if nothing changes.
