A regular (normal) blood sugar level before eating is below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L). After a meal, blood sugar rises temporarily and typically returns close to that baseline within a couple of hours. These numbers apply to most healthy adults, but targets shift during pregnancy, childhood, and other specific circumstances.
Normal Fasting Blood Sugar
Fasting blood sugar is measured after at least eight hours without food, usually first thing in the morning. A reading below 100 mg/dL is considered normal. Between 100 and 125 mg/dL falls into the prediabetes range, meaning your body is starting to have trouble managing glucose efficiently. A fasting level of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes.
Most healthy adults wake up with a fasting blood sugar somewhere between 70 and 99 mg/dL. If you’re consistently landing at the higher end of that range, it doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong, but it’s worth tracking over time.
Blood Sugar After Eating
Your blood sugar naturally climbs after a meal as your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose. In a person without diabetes, levels typically peak about 30 to 60 minutes after eating and settle back down within two hours. A reading below 140 mg/dL at the two-hour mark is generally considered normal. Readings between 140 and 199 mg/dL at two hours suggest prediabetes, and 200 mg/dL or above points to diabetes.
The size and composition of your meal matters. A plate of pasta will push your blood sugar higher and faster than a meal built around protein, fat, and fiber. That spike is normal, but the speed at which your body brings it back down is what separates healthy glucose metabolism from early insulin resistance.
The A1C Test: Your Three-Month Average
While a finger-stick glucose reading gives you a snapshot of one moment, the A1C test reveals your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. It measures the percentage of your red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. Because red blood cells live about three months, this test captures patterns that a single fasting reading would miss.
The thresholds are straightforward:
- Normal: below 5.7%
- Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
- Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
An A1C of 5.7% translates to an estimated average blood sugar of about 117 mg/dL. At 6.5%, that average jumps to roughly 140 mg/dL. If your fasting numbers look fine but your A1C is creeping upward, it often means your post-meal spikes are higher or lasting longer than they should.
What Shifts Blood Sugar in Healthy People
Even without diabetes, your blood sugar fluctuates throughout the day in response to more than just food. Understanding these factors helps explain why a reading might look different from one morning to the next.
Poor sleep is one of the biggest hidden influences. Even a single night of inadequate rest can reduce how effectively your body uses insulin, leading to higher glucose levels the following day. Stress has a similar effect: when your body is under physical or emotional pressure, it releases hormones that push blood sugar up. The CDC notes that even sunburn can raise blood sugar because the pain itself triggers a stress response.
Exercise generally lowers blood sugar by helping your muscles absorb glucose without needing as much insulin. But intense or unfamiliar workouts can sometimes cause a temporary spike, because your body releases stored glucose to fuel the effort. If you’re monitoring your levels, checking before and after a new activity helps you see how your body responds.
Illness and infections also raise blood sugar. When you’re fighting off a cold or dealing with inflammation, stress hormones increase and your cells become temporarily more resistant to insulin. This is normal and usually resolves once you recover.
Targets During Pregnancy
Blood sugar targets are tighter during pregnancy because even moderately elevated glucose can affect fetal development. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends the following goals for pregnant women:
- Fasting: below 95 mg/dL
- One hour after eating: below 140 mg/dL
- Two hours after eating: below 120 mg/dL
These numbers are lower than the general population targets, which is why gestational diabetes screening (typically done between weeks 24 and 28) uses its own set of cutoffs. Women who had normal blood sugar before pregnancy can develop gestational diabetes as placental hormones interfere with insulin function. In most cases, blood sugar returns to normal after delivery.
Children and Adolescents
Normal blood sugar ranges for children overlap with adult ranges but are often managed with slightly wider targets, especially for younger kids. UC Davis Children’s Hospital lists starting blood glucose goals of 71 to 180 mg/dL during the day and 101 to 200 mg/dL at bedtime for pediatric patients managing diabetes. Specific targets vary based on the child’s age, size, activity level, and how much their pancreas is still producing insulin.
For healthy children without diabetes, fasting blood sugar falls in the same sub-100 mg/dL range as adults. The wider management targets for children with diabetes reflect the practical reality that kids are less predictable eaters and more physically active, making tight control harder and low blood sugar episodes more dangerous.
When Numbers Fall Too Low
Most conversations about blood sugar focus on levels being too high, but going too low matters too. A blood sugar reading below 70 mg/dL is considered low (hypoglycemia) and can cause shakiness, sweating, confusion, irritability, and a rapid heartbeat. In healthy people without diabetes, this is relatively uncommon and usually happens after skipping meals, drinking alcohol on an empty stomach, or prolonged intense exercise.
If you’re not taking diabetes medication and you experience frequent symptoms of low blood sugar, it’s worth investigating. Reactive hypoglycemia, where blood sugar drops too far a few hours after eating, can occur in people who don’t have diabetes and is often managed through changes to meal timing and composition rather than medication.
