The normal human body temperature is about 97.9°F (36.6°C), not the 98.6°F (37°C) number most of us learned growing up. Healthy adults typically fall somewhere between 97.3°F and 98.2°F, with natural variation depending on the time of day, your age, how you measure it, and even the era you were born in.
Where 98.6°F Came From
The 98.6°F standard dates back to a German physician named Carl Wunderlich, who analyzed over one million armpit temperature readings from roughly 25,000 patients in the mid-1800s. His work was groundbreaking for the time, and the number stuck. It became the textbook answer taught in schools and printed on thermometer packaging for more than 150 years.
But that number no longer reflects reality. A Stanford Medicine research team analyzed over 618,000 oral temperature readings from adult patients seen between 2008 and 2017 and found the average had dropped to 97.9°F. Their broader work shows that average body temperature in the U.S. has been falling by about 0.05°F per decade since the 1800s.
Why Human Body Temperature Has Dropped
The leading explanation is that modern life has lowered our baseline metabolic rate. In the 19th century, chronic infections and untreated inflammatory diseases were far more common. Inflammation generates proteins and signaling molecules that speed up metabolism and raise temperature. With better hygiene, antibiotics, dental care, and improved nutrition, the population-wide burden of inflammation has fallen dramatically, and average temperature has fallen with it.
Climate-controlled environments play a role too. Homes in Wunderlich’s era had inconsistent heating and no air conditioning, which meant the body had to burn more energy to maintain a stable internal temperature. Today, central heating and cooling do that work for us. The cumulative result is that we are, in a measurable physiological sense, different from people who lived 200 years ago.
Normal Ranges by Age
Body temperature isn’t one-size-fits-all. Children run warmer than adults, and older adults run cooler. The typical range for children from birth to age 10 is 95.9°F to 99.5°F (35.5°C to 37.5°C). For adults over 65, the range narrows and drops to 96.4°F to 98.5°F (35.8°C to 36.9°C). This lower baseline in older adults is worth knowing because it means a fever can be harder to detect. A reading of 99°F might not sound alarming, but in someone whose normal sits around 97°F, it represents a meaningful spike.
How Measurement Method Affects the Number
Where you take your temperature changes the result. Oral readings (under the tongue) are the standard reference point. Rectal and ear (tympanic) readings tend to run 0.5°F to 1°F higher than oral. Armpit (axillary) readings run 0.5°F to 1°F lower. So if you take your temperature under your arm and get 97.6°F, your oral equivalent is closer to 98.1°F to 98.2°F.
Forehead (temporal artery) thermometers are convenient but can be thrown off by sweat, ambient temperature, and technique. If you’re comparing readings over time, try to use the same method and the same thermometer each time.
What Makes Your Temperature Fluctuate
Your body temperature isn’t static throughout the day. It follows a circadian rhythm, dipping to its lowest point in the early morning hours (around 4 a.m.) and peaking in the late afternoon or early evening. This daily swing can be a full degree or more, which is why a reading of 99°F after a busy afternoon may be completely normal for you.
Physical activity raises your temperature temporarily, as does eating a large meal. Stress and strong emotions can nudge it upward too. For people who menstruate, body temperature rises by about 0.5°F to 0.9°F (0.3°C to 0.5°C) after ovulation due to the hormone progesterone. This shift is reliable enough that it forms the basis of fertility tracking methods.
Certain health conditions also shift your baseline. An underactive thyroid slows metabolism and lowers resting body temperature. Medications that affect hormone levels or metabolism can have similar effects. If your temperature consistently reads below 97°F or you always feel cold, it may be worth a conversation with your doctor about thyroid function.
When a Temperature Becomes a Fever
An oral temperature of 100°F (37.8°C) or higher is generally considered a fever. Fever isn’t a disease. It’s your immune system deliberately raising the thermostat to create an environment less hospitable to viruses and bacteria. A low-grade fever (around 100°F to 100.4°F) often resolves on its own and doesn’t always need treatment.
On the other end of the spectrum, a core temperature below 95°F (35°C) is classified as hypothermia. Mild hypothermia (95°F down to about 89.6°F) causes shivering and confusion. Below 82.4°F, the situation becomes life-threatening, with loss of consciousness and risk of cardiac arrest. Hypothermia is most often caused by prolonged cold exposure but can also occur in elderly or malnourished people in only mildly cool environments.
Finding Your Personal Normal
Because the “normal” range spans nearly a full degree and varies by person, it helps to know your own baseline. Take your temperature a few times over a week or two when you’re feeling well, using the same method each time, at roughly the same time of day. The average of those readings is your personal normal. That number becomes far more useful than any population average when you’re trying to figure out whether a future reading means you’re running a fever or just had a warm afternoon.
