Fasting Blood Glucose

In a clinical setting, this is measured with an oral glucose tolerance test, where you drink a standardized sugar solution and have your blood drawn two hours later. A normal two-hour result is below 140 mg/dL. A reading between 140 and 199 mg/dL signals prediabetes, and 200 mg/dL or above indicates diabetes.

A1C: Your Three-Month Average
While a fasting test captures a single moment, the A1C test reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past two to three months. It works by measuring how much glucose has attached to your red blood cells. A normal A1C is below 5.7%. The prediabetes range is 5.7% to 6.4%, and an A1C of 6.5% or higher meets the criteria for diabetes.
A1C is useful because it isn’t thrown off by what you ate yesterday or how well you slept. It shows patterns rather than snapshots. Poor sleep, even a single bad night, reduces how effectively your body uses insulin. Dehydration concentrates your blood, making glucose readings appear higher. Stress from pain (including something as simple as a sunburn), illness, or emotional strain triggers hormones that raise blood sugar. Even some nasal decongestant sprays contain ingredients that signal your liver to release stored glucose.
There’s also the dawn phenomenon: a natural hormone surge in the early morning hours that raises blood sugar in everyone, though the effect is more pronounced in people with diabetes. This is why fasting morning readings can sometimes be higher than you’d expect, even if you ate well the day before.
When Symptoms Actually Appear
One of the tricky things about elevated blood sugar is that you usually can’t feel it until levels climb well above normal. Most people don’t experience noticeable symptoms of high blood sugar until readings exceed 180 to 200 mg/dL.
