Earwax exists to protect, lubricate, and self-clean your ear canals. It’s not a waste product or a sign of poor hygiene. It’s a deliberately produced substance that guards a vulnerable stretch of skin leading to your eardrum, trapping debris before it can cause damage and keeping the canal moisturized so the skin doesn’t crack or itch.
What Earwax Is Made Of
Earwax, known clinically as cerumen, is a blend of oily secretions, dead skin cells, and hair. Two types of glands inside the ear canal produce it. Sebaceous glands, attached to tiny hair follicles, release an oily substance called sebum. Ceruminous glands, a specialized type of sweat gland, add their own waxy secretion. These mix with shed skin cells to form the sticky or flaky substance you recognize as earwax.
About 52% of earwax’s dry weight is lipid (fat-based compounds). That lipid fraction includes fatty acids, cholesterol, wax esters, and squalene, among other components. This heavy fat content is what gives earwax its water-repelling, moisturizing properties. It’s essentially a custom-made barrier cream your body produces right where it’s needed.
It Fights Bacteria and Fungi
Your ear canal is warm, dark, and slightly damp. That’s an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi. Earwax counteracts this by creating an acidic coating along the canal walls. The acidic nature of cerumen is inhospitable to bacterial growth, which helps prevent outer ear infections (sometimes called swimmer’s ear). When the ear canal becomes inflamed, ceruminous glands ramp up production and the wax becomes even more acidic, essentially mounting a stronger chemical defense.
Beyond acidity, earwax contains enzymes and other compounds that actively inhibit microbial growth. The fatty acids in the wax are themselves antimicrobial. So earwax is doing double duty: creating an environment where pathogens struggle to survive while also chemically attacking them.
It Traps Debris and Keeps Skin Soft
The sticky texture of earwax isn’t accidental. It works like flypaper for dust, dirt, small insects, and other particles that enter the ear canal. Without this barrier, those particles would travel deeper toward your eardrum, where they could cause irritation or infection.
The high lipid content also keeps the delicate skin of the ear canal from drying out. The canal is lined with very thin skin that’s prone to cracking and itching if it loses moisture. People who aggressively remove all their earwax often notice their ears feel dry, itchy, or irritated afterward. That’s because they’ve stripped away the natural moisturizer.
Your Ears Clean Themselves
One of the more surprising facts about ear canals is that they have a built-in conveyor belt. The skin lining the canal grows outward from the eardrum toward the ear opening, carrying old earwax, trapped debris, and dead skin cells with it. This process, called epithelial migration, moves at an average speed of about 145 micrometers per day in a healthy ear canal. That’s roughly the rate your fingernails grow. Jaw movements from chewing and talking help nudge the wax along.
By the time earwax reaches the outer portion of your ear, it’s done its job. It dries out, flakes off, or falls out on its own. This self-cleaning system is why most people never need to actively remove earwax.
Not Everyone’s Earwax Looks the Same
There are two genetically determined types of earwax: wet and dry. A single gene called ABCC11 controls which type you produce. Wet earwax is honey-brown, sticky, and dominant in people of European and African descent. Dry earwax is gray, flaky, and far more common in East Asian populations. The allele for dry earwax reaches frequencies close to 100% in people from northern China and Korea, while it’s virtually absent in African populations. In Japan, only about 35% of people carry the genotype for wet earwax. Western European populations carry the dry earwax allele at rates of 10 to 20 percent.
Neither type is better or worse. Both perform the same protective functions. The difference is purely genetic and has no meaningful impact on ear health.
When Earwax Becomes a Problem
The system works well for most people, but sometimes earwax builds up faster than the ear can push it out. This is called cerumen impaction, and it affects between 2% and 6% of the general population. The rates are much higher among older adults, especially those in nursing homes, where nearly 40% show impacted earwax. Age-related changes in gland secretion, narrower ear canals, hearing aid use, and reduced jaw movement all contribute.
Impacted earwax can cause muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, ringing, dizziness, or earache. In older adults, it’s one of the most common and easily reversible causes of hearing loss, yet it often goes undiagnosed.
Why You Shouldn’t Use Cotton Swabs
Cotton swabs are the most common way people interfere with the ear’s self-cleaning process, and they reliably make things worse. Inserting a swab pushes hardened earwax deeper into the canal, compacting it against the eardrum. This can damage the thin lining of the ear canal, and in some cases, it perforates the eardrum and causes hearing loss.
The outer third of the ear canal is the only part that produces earwax. The inner two-thirds doesn’t. So when you push wax inward, you’re moving it into territory where it doesn’t belong and where your ear has no mechanism to remove it.
