The quick is the living tissue underneath your nail plate, packed with tiny blood vessels and nerve endings. It’s the reason a torn nail hurts so much and why cutting a dog’s nails too short causes bleeding. Whether you searched this because of a pet grooming question or your own painful nail injury, the quick is the same basic structure: a soft, blood-rich bed of tissue that nourishes the nail as it grows.
What the Quick Actually Is
Your nail plate, the hard part you trim, is made of dead cells. It has no nerves and no blood supply, which is why clipping it doesn’t hurt. But directly beneath that hard plate sits the nail bed, a layer of living skin that anchors the nail in place and feeds it nutrients through a dense network of small blood vessels. This nail bed is what most people mean when they say “the quick.”
The nail bed has tiny ridges that interlock with matching ridges on the underside of the nail plate, creating a tight bond. Those blood vessels are what give the pink color you see through a healthy nail. The nerve endings embedded in this tissue are what make it so sensitive when exposed. At the tip of your nail, where the white free edge begins, a strip of skin called the hyponychium seals the gap between the nail plate and the nail bed. This seal acts as a barrier against bacteria and debris, and it’s loaded with immune cells.
Why Cutting the Quick Hurts and Bleeds
Because the quick is living tissue with active blood flow, nicking it produces immediate, sharp pain and surprisingly heavy bleeding for such a small area. Fingertips and toe tips are among the most nerve-dense parts of the body, so even a minor cut there registers as intensely painful. The bleeding can also seem disproportionate because those small blood vessels are under constant pressure from normal circulation to the extremities.
In pets, this is the most common nail-trimming injury. In humans, it typically happens when a nail tears deep enough to pull away from the bed, or when a nail is ripped off entirely. The exposed tissue is vulnerable not just to pain but to infection, since the protective barrier of the hard nail plate is gone.
Finding the Quick in Pet Nails
On dogs and cats with light or translucent nails, you can usually see the quick as a pinkish core running partway down the nail. The trick is to trim only the pale, hollow-looking tip beyond where the pink stops.
Dark nails are harder. For dogs with black nails, flip the paw over and look at the nail from underneath as you trim in small increments. You’ll eventually see a tiny dark dot appear in the center of the freshly cut surface. That dot marks the beginning of the quick, and it’s your signal to stop.
One useful detail: the quick grows longer when nails are left untrimmed for extended periods. The blood vessel and nerve supply gradually extends further toward the tip. Regular trimming, roughly every two to four weeks, encourages the quick to recede back toward the paw, making each future trim easier and less risky.
What to Do When the Quick Gets Cut
For pet nails, styptic powder is the standard first-aid tool. The active ingredient, an iron-based compound, works as a clotting agent that contracts the blood vessels on contact. You press a pinch of the powder firmly against the cut surface for several seconds, and bleeding typically stops within a minute or two. Cornstarch or flour can work in a pinch, though they’re slower.
For human nails, gentle pressure with a clean cloth or gauze usually controls the bleeding. If the nail plate has partially torn away from the bed, resist the urge to pull it off. The remaining attached nail acts as a natural bandage and splint for the tissue underneath.
How the Quick Heals After Injury
Minor cuts to the quick, like trimming a pet’s nail too short, heal within a few days as the blood vessels seal and the tissue closes over. More serious injuries where the nail plate is lost entirely take significantly longer. The nail bed typically begins regenerating a new nail within three to five weeks, visible as a rough, slightly raised area emerging from the base of the nail. Full replacement of the nail plate takes an average of three to four months for fingernails and longer for toenails, which grow more slowly.
Most nail bed injuries heal without lasting problems, but the new nail may grow in with ridges or a slightly different texture, especially if the injury was deep enough to damage the nail matrix (the root area where new nail cells are produced).
Signs of Infection to Watch For
An exposed quick is an open door for bacteria. The condition that develops when the skin around or under a nail becomes infected is called paronychia, and it’s worth recognizing early. Symptoms include increasing pain and swelling around the nail, skin that turns red and feels warm, and eventually a buildup of white or yellowish pus near the nail margin.
Acute infections develop quickly, within a day or two of the injury, and are usually bacterial. Chronic infections develop more slowly, lasting six weeks or longer, and often involve a fungal component. Left untreated, the nail itself can become discolored, brittle, and misshapen, and in severe cases it may detach from the nail bed entirely.
