What Is the Roof of the Mouth Called: The Palate

The roof of the mouth is called the palate. It’s divided into two distinct parts: the hard palate at the front, which is made of bone, and the soft palate at the back, which is made of muscle. Together, they form the barrier between your mouth and your nasal cavity, playing a role in everything from eating and breathing to speech and taste.

Hard Palate: The Bony Front Section

The hard palate makes up roughly the front two-thirds of the roof of your mouth. If you press your tongue upward, the firm, ridged surface you feel is the hard palate. It’s formed by two facial bones: the palatine process of the maxilla (your upper jaw bone) and the paired palatine bones further back.

Running along the hard palate are small ridges called rugae. These lateral ridges of tissue fan outward from the center and serve a practical purpose. They create friction that helps you press food against the roof of your mouth while chewing, making it easier to break down and manipulate what you’re eating. The hard palate also gives your tongue a firm surface to push against when forming certain speech sounds.

Soft Palate: The Muscular Back Section

Behind the hard palate, the tissue becomes fleshy and flexible. This is the soft palate, sometimes called the velum. Unlike the hard palate, it has no bone. Instead, it’s a muscular flap that can move up and down, acting like a gate between your mouth and your nasal passages.

When you swallow, the soft palate lifts and presses against the back of your throat, sealing off the nasal airway so food and liquid don’t come out your nose. Hanging from the back edge of the soft palate is the uvula, that small teardrop-shaped piece of tissue visible at the back of your throat. The uvula helps with this sealing action and also secretes saliva to keep your mouth and throat moist. It’s also part of your gag reflex: if something touches it unexpectedly, it can trigger gagging as a protective response against choking.

Why the Palate Matters for Speech

The palate is surprisingly active during conversation. Most speech sounds, including “p,” “b,” “t,” “d,” “k,” “g,” “s,” and “sh,” are oral sounds that require the soft palate to lift and close so air doesn’t leak through the nose. A smaller group of sounds, like “m,” “n,” and “ng,” are nasal sounds where the palate stays open to let air flow through the nose on purpose.

This means your palate is constantly moving while you talk. In a single word like “jump,” the soft palate has to lift up, drop down, and lift again to produce the correct sequence of oral and nasal sounds. In languages like French and German, the uvula also vibrates to help produce certain sounds, like the French “r.”

Taste Buds on the Palate

Most people think of taste as something that happens only on the tongue, but the soft palate contains taste buds too. You can test this yourself by dabbing a small amount of salt water or sugar water on the roof of your mouth near the back. Most people can clearly taste both salt and sweet without the liquid ever touching the tongue. Research on the nerve fibers that serve these palate taste buds shows that different fibers specialize in different tastes: some respond strongly to sweet, others to salt, and others to bitter or sour.

Common Palate Problems

The roof of the mouth is prone to a few issues that are mostly harmless but can be uncomfortable. Burns from hot food (the classic “pizza burn”) are one of the most frequent complaints. The thin tissue of the hard palate is sensitive to heat and heals relatively slowly because it’s constantly exposed to food and saliva.

Canker sores can also develop on the palate. These small, shallow ulcers have several triggers, including minor tissue injury from dental work, accidentally biting the inside of your mouth, acidic foods like oranges and pineapples, stress, and hormonal changes. They typically clear up on their own within a week or two. Oral thrush, a fungal overgrowth that causes red and creamy white patches, is another condition that commonly appears on the palate, particularly after antibiotic use or when the immune system is weakened.

A more unusual but completely benign finding is torus palatinus, a bony lump that grows on the hard palate. Between 20% and 30% of the general population has one, and they’re more common in women and in people of East Asian, European, or West African descent. These growths vary in size, don’t indicate infection or cancer, and rarely need treatment unless they interfere with dentures or other dental work.

The Palate’s Evolutionary Role

The palate exists because mammals need to breathe and eat at the same time. By creating a solid wall between the oral and nasal cavities, the hard palate lets air flow through the nose while food is being chewed in the mouth below. The soft palate then acts as a switch during swallowing, temporarily closing off the nasal passage to protect the airway. Without this separation, eating would require holding your breath with every bite.
