What Is the White Part of the Nail Called: Lunula

The white half-moon shape at the base of your fingernail is called the lunula. It’s the only visible part of the nail matrix, the tissue underneath your nail where new cell growth occurs. Most people notice it clearly on their thumbs, though it can appear on any finger.

What the Lunula Actually Is

The lunula isn’t a separate structure. It’s a window into the nail matrix, the factory that produces your nail plate. The matrix itself is mostly hidden beneath the skin at the base of your nail, but its furthest edge peeks out as that pale crescent shape. The name comes from the Latin word for “little moon.”

The lunula appears early in development, forming by about week 14 of gestation. It plays a structural role in shaping the free edge of your nail, the part that eventually grows past your fingertip. Because the matrix cells beneath the lunula are actively producing new nail, this area is softer and more vulnerable to damage than the rest of your nail plate. Pressing too hard on the lunula or injuring it can cause temporary or permanent changes to how your nail grows.

Why It Looks White

The rest of your nail plate looks pink because you can see the blood-rich nail bed underneath. The lunula looks white (or sometimes clear) because of what’s happening in the living tissue directly below it. The nail matrix cells in this region are densely packed and not yet fully hardened, which blocks the pinkish color of the blood vessels beneath. Think of it like frosted glass: the tissue is thick enough to obscure what’s behind it.

Not Everyone Can See Theirs

If you can’t spot a lunula on every finger, that’s normal. The thumbs almost always have a visible one because the nail matrix is larger there. On your pinky or ring finger, the lunula is often completely hidden beneath the cuticle. Some people don’t see lunulae on any fingers, and this alone isn’t a sign of a health problem. The cuticle, a thick layer of protective skin along your nail fold, simply covers more or less of the matrix depending on your individual anatomy.

When Lunula Changes Signal Something Else

While a missing lunula on its own is rarely meaningful, changes in lunula color can occasionally reflect systemic health conditions. A blue lunula (sometimes called azure lunula) has been associated with Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic condition involving copper buildup in the body. A red lunula can appear in people with heart failure. These color shifts happen because the living matrix tissue responds to changes in blood chemistry and circulation.

Two nail conditions are worth knowing about. Terry’s nails cause nearly the entire nail bed to look white or washed out, with the lunula disappearing entirely. This pattern is linked to liver disease, kidney disease, and diabetes. Lindsay’s nails, sometimes called half-and-half nails, show the lower half of the nail as white and the upper half as brown or reddish. This is most commonly associated with kidney disease. In both cases, the change affects multiple nails at once and looks distinctly different from a normal lunula.

How the Lunula Fits Into Nail Anatomy

Your nail has more components than most people realize. The nail plate is the hard, translucent part you trim and paint. It sits on top of the nail bed, which supplies blood and gives healthy nails their pink color. At the very base, the nail matrix generates new cells that push forward and harden into the plate. The lunula marks where the matrix is close enough to the surface to be visible.

Surrounding all of this is the cuticle (also called the eponychium), which seals the gap between your skin and nail plate to keep bacteria and fungi out. This is why aggressively cutting or pushing back cuticles can lead to infections. The cuticle’s job is to protect the matrix, and the lunula sits right at that boundary where living, growing tissue transitions into the hardened nail you see every day.
