Tooth powder is a dry, loose dental cleaning product that works the same way toothpaste does, just without the water, thickeners, and binding agents that give paste its familiar texture. You dip a toothbrush into the powder, brush normally, and rinse. It was the dominant way people cleaned their teeth for centuries before toothpaste took over in the mid-20th century, and it’s now making a comeback among people looking for simpler ingredients or less plastic packaging.

How Tooth Powder Differs From Toothpaste

The core job of both products is the same: deliver mild abrasives and active ingredients to your teeth so you can scrub away plaque and food debris. The difference is in what holds them together. Toothpaste contains humectants (moisture-retaining ingredients) and thickeners that keep it smooth and squeezable inside a tube. Tooth powder skips all of that. It’s just the functional ingredients in dry form, which means fewer total ingredients and a longer shelf life since there’s no water to support bacterial growth.

Because tooth powder is dry, it typically comes in a glass jar or tin rather than a plastic tube. This is one of the main reasons it’s gained popularity again. Many commercial tooth powders also include fluoride, typically as sodium fluoride, the same cavity-fighting ingredient found in standard toothpaste.

Where tooth powders diverge most from mainstream toothpaste is in the “natural” and specialty market. You’ll find powders featuring activated charcoal, bentonite clay, or hydroxyapatite, a synthetic form of the mineral that makes up tooth enamel. Each of these has a different profile of evidence behind it.

Hydroxyapatite as a Fluoride Alternative

Hydroxyapatite has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in fluoride-free dental products. It’s a lab-made version of the calcium phosphate mineral your teeth are naturally composed of, and the idea is that applying it topically helps repair and strengthen enamel. A 2024 systematic review of clinical trials found expanding evidence that hydroxyapatite is effective at reducing cavities even without fluoride. The reviewers concluded it’s a suitable substitute for fluoride in products designed for young children, since it’s considered safe if swallowed, and that hydroxyapatite-based products can be used by people of all ages.

This makes hydroxyapatite tooth powders a practical option for parents worried about young children swallowing fluoride, or for anyone who prefers to avoid it. That said, fluoride remains the most extensively studied cavity-prevention ingredient available, with decades of population-level data behind it.

The Charcoal Question

Activated charcoal tooth powder is marketed primarily for whitening. The charcoal is abrasive and porous, which can lift some surface stains. But Harvard Health Publishing cautions that charcoal is too abrasive for daily use and risks damaging tooth enamel over time. Charcoal particles can also get trapped in tiny cracks in teeth, potentially causing gray or black discoloration along the edges, the opposite of what most people are going for. Most charcoal powders also lack fluoride, so you’re giving up cavity protection for a whitening effect that comes with real tradeoffs.

If you want to try charcoal powder, limiting use to once or twice a week and pairing it with a fluoride product on other days reduces the risk.

Abrasivity and Enamel Safety

The biggest concern with any tooth powder is abrasivity. Dental products are rated on a scale called Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA), where higher numbers mean more wear on your teeth. Products scoring above 80 are considered very strong abrasives on dentin, the layer just beneath enamel. How to Use Tooth Powder

The technique is straightforward but slightly different from squeezing a tube. Start with a dry toothbrush. Press the bristles into the powder with light pressure so the powder sticks between them. Then put the brush in your mouth and brush as you normally would for two minutes. Your saliva will mix with the powder and create a slurry that works just like paste.

One important detail: if you prefer wetting your toothbrush first, shake off all the excess water before dipping it into the jar. Dripping water into the powder can introduce moisture that shortens its shelf life or encourages clumping. Tooth powder isn’t inherently better or worse than toothpaste for most people. The active ingredients can be identical. But certain situations make powder a more practical choice. Travelers benefit from its compact size and the fact that it’s not a liquid (no TSA restrictions). People trying to reduce plastic waste appreciate the glass or metal packaging. Those with sensitivities to common toothpaste additives like sodium lauryl sulfate (a foaming agent) or artificial sweeteners can often find simpler formulas in powder form, since powders tend to have shorter ingredient lists overall.

For people with weakened or thin enamel, the choice requires more care. Without a published RDA value, it’s harder to gauge how abrasive a given powder is. In that case, a toothpaste with a known low-abrasivity rating may be the more predictable option.
