What Is Under Turf Football Fields: Every Layer

A synthetic turf football field is built from multiple engineered layers stacked on top of each other, starting from the ground up. What looks like a simple green surface is actually a system roughly 12 to 18 inches deep, with each layer handling a specific job: drainage, stability, shock absorption, or playing comfort. Here’s what’s under there, from the bottom up.

The Prepared Subgrade

Everything starts with the native soil. Before any materials go down, the existing ground is excavated, graded to a precise slope (typically less than 1% grade), and compacted to at least 92% density. This compaction prevents the ground from settling unevenly over time, which would create dips and soft spots in the playing surface years later.

Once the soil is compacted, a geotextile fabric is laid across the entire field. This is a sheet of woven or non-woven synthetic material that acts as a barrier between the native soil and the stone layers above. Without it, fine soil particles would slowly migrate upward into the drainage stone, clogging the system and destabilizing the base. On fields built over clay-heavy or moisture-sensitive soils, installers use a thicker, coated membrane instead of standard fabric to create a stronger separation.

Crushed Stone Base

On top of the fabric sits the aggregate base, which is the structural backbone of the entire field. This layer is made of compactable crushed stone, often called ABC (aggregate base course), spread and compacted in lifts. The total depth varies depending on soil conditions, drainage needs, and the overall field design, but it typically runs 3 to 4 inches of coarser aggregate topped by another layer of crushed fines to create a firm, level surface.

This stone layer does two things simultaneously. First, it provides a rigid, load-bearing platform that distributes weight evenly and resists shifting. Second, the gaps between the stone particles create pathways for water to drain vertically through the system rather than pooling on the surface. Some fields use only the stone layer for drainage, relying on gravity and slope. Others incorporate perforated pipes, usually 4 to 10 inches in diameter, laid in trenches within the stone in a herringbone or diagonal pattern. The pipes are surrounded by filter fabric and clean stone to prevent clogging, and they channel water off the field far more efficiently than stone alone.

The Shock Pad

Not every turf field has this layer, but most professional and high-level installations do. The shock pad is a flat panel, typically made of closed-cell foam or molded rubber, that sits directly on top of the stone base. Its purpose is to absorb impact energy when a player hits the ground.

Surface hardness on turf fields is measured in units called Gmax, which quantify how much force a surface transmits during impact. The industry safety standard, set by ASTM, requires all areas of a football field to measure below 200 Gmax. For comparison, natural grass fields typically fall between 70 and 115 Gmax. A shock pad helps bridge that gap, bringing the turf system closer to how real grass feels and responds. Fields without a shock pad rely entirely on the infill layer above to cushion impacts, which can be less consistent over time as infill compacts or shifts.

The Turf Carpet and Its Backing

The green surface you actually see is a manufactured carpet. Synthetic grass fibers, usually made of polyethylene or nylon, are tufted into a primary backing made of woven or non-woven polypropylene or high-strength polyester. Think of it like a giant rug with thousands of individual “blades” stitched through a fabric sheet.

To lock those fibers in place, the underside of the backing is coated with a secondary layer of latex or polyurethane. This coating bonds the fibers to the backing so they don’t pull out under foot traffic, cleats, or weather exposure. The finished carpet is manufactured in rolls, shipped to the site, and seamed together across the field.

Infill: The Layer You Walk On

Once the carpet is laid, it’s filled with granular material that settles between the synthetic fibers. This infill is what gives the field its footing, cushion, and weight. On most football fields, infill is a blend of sand and crumb rubber, with the rubber particles typically measuring around 0.8 to 1.0 millimeters across. The total depth of infill ranges from about 25 to 38 millimeters (roughly 1 to 1.5 inches), depending on the fiber length and the performance characteristics the field is designed to achieve.

Research at Penn State found that mixing sand and crumb rubber together produces lower surface hardness than using either material alone. The ratio matters too. A 50/50 blend of sand and crumb rubber is common, though some fields use different proportions depending on the sport and climate. Deeper infill (38 mm versus 25 mm) didn’t change surface hardness much in dry conditions, but it did produce a softer surface when wet.

The crumb rubber in most fields comes from recycled tires, though alternatives have gained traction in recent years. Some fields use coconut fiber, cork, or coated sand. Others use specialized infill treated with hydrophilic compounds that absorb moisture from dew, rain, or humidity and release it through evaporation. This cooling infill can reduce surface temperatures by as much as 50°F compared to standard crumb rubber, which matters because synthetic turf absorbs significantly more heat than natural grass on sunny days. A separate approach embeds heat-reflective pigments directly into the grass fibers during manufacturing, which can keep the surface 15 to 20°F cooler than traditional turf.

How the Layers Work Together

Each layer depends on the ones below it. The compacted subgrade prevents settling. The geotextile keeps soil from contaminating the drainage stone. The stone base provides structure and moves water. The shock pad absorbs impact. The carpet provides the playing surface. And the infill gives the field its feel, grip, and additional cushion.

When a player lands on the turf, the force travels downward through all of these layers. The infill compresses first, then the shock pad deforms slightly, and the stone base resists any further movement. The whole system is engineered so that the combined Gmax stays well below the 200-G safety threshold across the entire field, even in the high-traffic areas between the hash marks where impacts are most frequent. Fields are tested in place using a standardized protocol (ASTM F1936) that maps impact readings across multiple points, including areas lined for different sports, to make sure no zone exceeds the limit.

From the bottom of the excavated subgrade to the tips of the synthetic fibers, a finished turf football field represents a surprisingly complex piece of engineering, all designed to drain fast, play consistently, and keep athletes safer than bare ground ever could.
