Vabbing is the practice of applying vaginal secretions to pulse points on the body, like the wrists, neck, and inner elbows, as if they were perfume. The idea is that these natural scents will act as a pheromone-like attractant, making the person more appealing to potential partners. The gym is the most popular setting for vabbing because it combines close physical proximity with a social atmosphere. The trend went viral on TikTok and spread across the internet, but the science behind it doesn’t hold up.
How Vabbing Is Supposed to Work
The theory behind vabbing borrows loosely from the concept of pheromones: chemicals released by one individual that trigger a specific response in another member of the same species. Insects and many animals rely heavily on pheromones for mating and social behavior. Proponents of vabbing claim that vaginal secretions contain similar chemical signals that can subconsciously attract others, and that applying them before a workout makes those signals stronger because body heat and sweating help spread the scent.
The gym setting is intentional. People are in close quarters, sharing equipment, and already primed to notice physical presence. The idea is that warm skin and elevated heart rate amplify whatever scent you’re wearing, natural or otherwise.
The Science of Human Pheromones
Scientists have studied four main chemicals as possible human pheromones, investigating their effects on mood, social perception, and sexual attraction. None of these compounds have been conclusively proven to be a true human pheromone. The research is plagued by small sample sizes, weak statistics, inconsistent findings, and a strong publication bias toward positive results. Many studies tested these chemicals in doses far higher than the body naturally produces, making results unreliable.
Part of the problem is sheer complexity. Humans emit thousands of odor molecules, making it extremely difficult to isolate which one might cause a specific response. On top of that, how people react to smells is shaped by culture, mood, and individual differences, which makes behavioral responses highly inconsistent. Without a clear, measurable response tied to a specific chemical, identifying a true human pheromone is essentially impossible with current methods.
One frequently cited piece of evidence is a 1971 study suggesting that women’s menstrual cycles synchronize when they live together, which was taken as evidence of human pheromone communication. That finding crumbled under scrutiny. Other studies failed to replicate it, and researchers showed that the apparent synchrony could arise purely by chance. Another well-known experiment from 1995 found that women preferred the scent of T-shirts worn by men whose immune system genes were most different from their own. While this has been replicated and is a genuine example of body odor transmitting biological information, the scent involved doesn’t meet the strict definition of a pheromone. The smell of sweat mostly comes from bacteria on the shirt, not from any pheromone-like signal.
Why the Biology Doesn’t Support It
Many animals detect pheromones through a specialized structure called the vomeronasal organ. Adult humans do have a remnant of this organ in the nasal cavity, but it’s essentially nonfunctional. It lacks sensory neurons and nerve fibers. The genes that would code for its receptor proteins have mutated and no longer work, and the brain structure that would receive signals from it (the accessory olfactory bulb) doesn’t exist in humans. In short, even if vaginal secretions contained pheromone-like compounds, humans lack the biological hardware to detect them in the way other animals do.
This doesn’t mean scent plays zero role in human attraction. People do respond to body odor, and smell can influence how attractive someone seems. But that’s general chemosensory processing through the regular sense of smell, not a pheromone pathway. There’s no evidence that vaginal secretions applied to pulse points would function differently from any other body odor.
Hygiene Risks in a Gym Setting
Beyond the lack of scientific support, vabbing at the gym raises real hygiene concerns. Gym equipment is already a significant source of bacterial transmission. Research sampling barbells, dumbbells, and chest fly machines across multiple fitness centers found antibiotic-resistant bacteria on every piece of equipment tested. MRSA, a dangerous staph infection that can progress from skin sores to infections of the heart and blood, was present on 100% of sampled surfaces. MRSA can survive on gym equipment for up to 60 days.
Applying bodily fluids to your skin before handling shared equipment adds another vector for contamination, both for you and for others. Gyms already struggle with pathogen transmission through normal skin-to-surface contact. Standard gym policies require daily cleaning and disinfection of all equipment surfaces, and patrons are expected to wipe down equipment after use. Intentionally introducing additional bodily fluids onto shared surfaces runs counter to these basic public health measures.
There’s also a personal risk. Touching gym surfaces covered in bacteria and then touching your face, neck, or other pulse points where you’ve applied secretions could introduce pathogens to sensitive skin. The vaginal microbiome itself is delicate, and repeatedly transferring bacteria from gym equipment to your hands and then to intimate areas could disrupt it.
Why the Trend Gained Traction
Vabbing’s popularity has less to do with biology and more to do with how social media works. Personal anecdotes are compelling, and confirmation bias is powerful. If someone vabs before a gym session and someone happens to flirt with them, it feels like proof. The reality is that confidence, body language, and simply being in a social environment explain those interactions far more reliably than any scent-based mechanism. Feeling like you have a secret weapon can genuinely change how you carry yourself, and that shift in energy is what other people actually notice.
The trend also taps into a broader fascination with “natural” approaches to attraction and a distrust of the beauty industry. The appeal of the idea that your body already produces everything you need is understandable. But wanting something to be true doesn’t make the biology cooperate.
