A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That range applies when you’re sitting quietly or lying down, not after exercise or a stressful moment. Where you land within that window depends on your age, fitness level, and a handful of other factors worth understanding.
Resting Heart Rate for Adults
The 60 to 100 bpm range is the standard benchmark used in clinical medicine. Most healthy adults sit somewhere in the middle of that range, typically between 65 and 85 bpm. A lower resting heart rate generally signals a more efficient heart. Well-trained endurance athletes can have resting rates as low as 40 bpm because their hearts pump more blood with each beat, so fewer beats are needed to keep everything running.
If your resting heart rate consistently lands above 100 bpm, that’s considered tachycardia. Below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. Neither label automatically means something is wrong. A fit person with a rate of 55 is perfectly healthy, and someone with a rate of 102 after drinking coffee or feeling anxious may be completely fine once those factors pass. The numbers matter most when they’re persistent and paired with symptoms.
Normal Heart Rate by Age in Children
Children’s hearts beat significantly faster than adult hearts, and the younger the child, the higher the rate. These ranges reflect what’s normal when a child is awake:
- Newborn to 3 months: 85 to 205 bpm
- 3 months to 2 years: 100 to 190 bpm
- 2 to 10 years: 60 to 140 bpm
- Over 10 years: 60 to 100 bpm (same as adults)
During sleep, children’s heart rates drop. A sleeping toddler in the 75 to 160 bpm range is normal. By around age 10, children’s heart rates settle into the adult range and stay there.
What Affects Your Resting Heart Rate
Your heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts throughout the day based on what your body is doing and what it’s responding to. Fitness level is the single biggest factor. Regular aerobic exercise strengthens the heart muscle so it can push out more blood per beat, which gradually lowers your resting rate over weeks and months. Sedentary adults tend to have resting rates closer to the upper end of the normal range.
Stress and anxiety trigger your body’s fight-or-flight response, releasing hormones that speed up your heart. Heat and dehydration do the same, because your heart has to work harder to cool the body and circulate a reduced blood volume. Medications like thyroid drugs and some asthma inhalers can raise your rate, while beta-blockers lower it. Caffeine is widely believed to spike heart rate, but research on trained individuals has found no significant difference in heart rate after caffeine intake compared to a placebo. The effect may be more noticeable if you rarely consume caffeine or are particularly sensitive to it.
Body position matters too. Your heart rate is slightly higher when standing than when sitting or lying down, because your cardiovascular system has to work against gravity to push blood upward.
Heart Rate During Exercise
When you’re working out, your heart rate should climb well above your resting rate. How high depends on the intensity. The American Heart Association defines two target zones based on your estimated maximum heart rate:
- Moderate intensity: 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate
- Vigorous intensity: 70% to 85% of your maximum heart rate
To estimate your maximum heart rate, the simplest formula is 220 minus your age. A 40-year-old would get a maximum of 180 bpm, making their moderate-intensity zone roughly 90 to 126 bpm and their vigorous zone 126 to 153 bpm. This formula is a rough estimate, though. It was originally derived from data on older adults with cardiovascular risk factors and tends to overestimate the true maximum by about 14 bpm on average.
A more refined formula, developed through a large meta-analysis, calculates maximum heart rate as 208 minus 0.7 times your age. For that same 40-year-old, this gives a maximum of 180 bpm (the two formulas happen to converge at age 40, but diverge for younger and older people). Even this updated formula can be off by about 11 bpm in either direction for a given individual. The takeaway: these formulas are useful starting points, but your actual maximum heart rate can only be determined through a supervised exercise test.
How to Check Your Heart Rate
The easiest method is placing two fingers (index and middle) on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb. Press lightly until you feel a pulse, count the beats for 15 seconds, and multiply by four. You can also feel your pulse on the side of your neck, just below the jawline. For the most accurate resting reading, check it first thing in the morning before getting out of bed.
Fitness trackers and smartwatches use optical sensors that shine light through your skin to detect blood flow. These are convenient for tracking trends over time, but they become less accurate during high-intensity exercise. The British Heart Foundation notes that some devices now include single-lead ECG features that can read heart rhythms, but these are not as reliable as proper medical tests. Wearables are best treated as general-purpose tools, not diagnostic instruments.
When a Heart Rate Is Concerning
A resting heart rate that’s consistently above 100 or below 60 is worth paying attention to, but the number alone isn’t the whole picture. Context and symptoms matter far more. An athlete with a resting rate of 48 bpm who feels great has no cause for concern. Someone with no fitness background whose rate sits at 48 and who feels dizzy or fatigued is in a different situation entirely.
If your heart rate drops into the 30s, that can mean your brain isn’t getting enough oxygen. This may cause fainting, lightheadedness, and shortness of breath. A heart rate below 40 bpm that isn’t your personal norm warrants emergency attention.
On the fast side, the key warning signs that turn a high heart rate into an emergency are chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting. A type of dangerously fast rhythm called ventricular fibrillation can cause blood pressure to plummet so quickly that a person collapses within seconds and loses their pulse. Any combination of a racing heart with chest pain, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness calls for immediate emergency care.
Outside of emergencies, a gradually rising resting heart rate over weeks or months can be an early signal of declining cardiovascular fitness, chronic stress, poor sleep, or an underlying condition like thyroid dysfunction. Tracking your resting rate over time gives you a personal baseline that makes it easier to spot meaningful changes.
