What Is Your Pulse Rate Supposed to Be?

A normal resting pulse rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute. That range applies when you’re awake, calm, and sitting still. Where you land within it depends on your age, fitness level, medications, and even your emotional state at the moment you check.

Normal Resting Pulse by Age

Children’s hearts beat considerably faster than adults’, and the younger the child, the faster the rate. Newborns up to 3 months old have a normal waking pulse of 85 to 205 beats per minute. From 3 months to 2 years, the range narrows slightly to 100 to 190. Between ages 2 and 10, a healthy resting pulse sits between 60 and 140 beats per minute. By age 10, children settle into the adult range of 60 to 100.

During sleep, pulse rates drop across all age groups. A sleeping newborn may be as low as 80 beats per minute, and a sleeping adult or older child typically falls between 50 and 90.

What Fitness Does to Your Pulse

Regular aerobic exercise makes the heart stronger and more efficient. A well-conditioned heart pumps more blood with each beat, so it doesn’t need to beat as often. That’s why endurance athletes commonly have resting pulse rates of 40 to 50 beats per minute, sometimes even lower. Exercise also increases activity of the vagus nerve, which acts as a natural brake on heart rate, and slows the heart’s built-in pacemaker cells.

If you’re not a trained athlete and your resting pulse consistently sits below 60, that’s worth bringing up with a doctor. In fit people a low pulse is a sign of cardiovascular efficiency. In everyone else it can signal an electrical problem with the heart.

How to Check Your Pulse

Sit down and rest quietly for a few minutes before measuring. Turn one hand palm-up and place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist, in the groove between the wrist bone and the tendon on the thumb side. Press lightly until you feel each beat. Pushing too hard can actually block blood flow and make it harder to feel.

You can also check at your neck by placing two fingertips in the groove beside your windpipe on one side. Never press on both sides of your neck at the same time, as this can cause dizziness or fainting.

Count beats for a full 60 seconds using a watch or timer. Some people count for 15 seconds and multiply by four, but a full minute gives you a more accurate reading and lets you notice any irregular rhythm.

How Accurate Are Wearable Monitors

Wrist-based heart rate monitors are convenient, but their accuracy varies more than most people realize. A systematic review covering 32 studies and 16 different devices found that some models had mean percentage errors as high as 20%. Accuracy also drops during exercise. People with darker skin tones experienced measurement errors of about 16 beats per minute during activity, compared to roughly 4 beats per minute for those with lighter skin. If you’re using a wearable to track trends over time, it’s a reasonable tool. If you need a precise reading, checking manually or using a chest strap monitor is more reliable.

Your Pulse During Exercise

During a workout, your pulse should rise well above its resting level. The American Heart Association recommends aiming for 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate during moderate exercise and 70% to 85% during vigorous exercise.

You’ve probably seen the formula “220 minus your age” for estimating your maximum heart rate. It’s everywhere in fitness apps and gym posters, but it has a surprisingly weak foundation. It was never derived from rigorous research. A review published by the American Society of Exercise Physiologists concluded that it has “no scientific merit” and carries a standard error of 7 to 11 beats per minute. That means if you’re 40 and the formula predicts a max of 180, your actual maximum could be anywhere from around 169 to 191.

For a rough sense of your exercise zones, the formula still gives you a ballpark. But if precise heart rate training matters to you, the only reliable approach is a supervised maximum heart rate test, not a calculation.

What Raises or Lowers Your Pulse

Plenty of everyday factors shift your pulse temporarily. Caffeine, stress, anxiety, dehydration, and hot weather all push it higher. Fever can increase your resting rate by about 10 beats per minute for every degree above normal. Even standing up from a seated position raises it briefly.

Several common medications affect pulse rate, too. Beta blockers, often prescribed for high blood pressure, actively slow the heart and reduce its force. Blood pressure medications like calcium channel blockers can lower your pulse as a side effect. On the other end, stimulant medications, decongestants, and some asthma inhalers can speed it up. If you notice a significant change in your resting pulse after starting a new medication, your prescriber should know.

When Your Pulse Signals a Problem

A resting pulse consistently above 100 beats per minute in an adult is classified as tachycardia. A resting pulse consistently below 60 (in someone who isn’t physically fit) is classified as bradycardia. Both can be harmless, or both can indicate an underlying heart rhythm issue.

The number alone matters less than how you feel. Symptoms that suggest your heart rhythm needs attention include a fluttering or pounding sensation in your chest, dizziness, unusual fatigue, sweating without exertion, and episodes of nearly fainting or actually fainting. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting alongside an abnormal pulse rate are emergency signs that call for immediate medical care.

An irregular rhythm is also worth paying attention to. When you check your pulse manually, the beats should feel evenly spaced. Occasional skipped beats are common and usually harmless, but a persistently irregular pattern, where beats seem randomly spaced, is something to have evaluated.
