What Is Your Resting Heart Rate Supposed to Be?

A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That said, where you land within that range matters more than most people realize. A resting heart rate consistently above 80 bpm is linked to meaningfully higher health risks, while rates in the 60s and 70s are generally associated with better cardiovascular fitness.

Normal Ranges by Age

Your heart rate changes dramatically from birth through adulthood. A newborn’s heart beats nearly twice as fast as an adult’s because the heart is so small it needs more contractions to circulate blood. As the heart grows, it pumps more blood per beat and the rate naturally slows.

  • Newborn (birth to 4 weeks): 100 to 205 bpm
  • Infant (4 weeks to 1 year): 100 to 180 bpm
  • Toddler (1 to 3 years): 98 to 140 bpm
  • Preschool (3 to 5 years): 80 to 120 bpm
  • School age (5 to 12 years): 75 to 118 bpm
  • Adolescent (13 to 17 years): 60 to 100 bpm
  • Adult (18 and older): 60 to 100 bpm

These ranges apply when you’re awake, calm, and not moving. Your heart rate drops while you sleep and rises during physical activity, both of which are completely normal.

Why Sex Affects Your Heart Rate

Women typically have a slightly faster resting heart rate than men. The reason is structural: a female heart weighs about 25% less than a male heart on average, which means it holds less blood per beat. To compensate, it pumps more frequently. Hormones also play a role, though the size difference is the primary driver. So if you’re a woman and your resting rate sits a few beats higher than your male partner’s, that’s expected physiology, not a sign of lower fitness.

What a Lower Rate Means for Fitness

Highly fit people often have resting heart rates well below 60 bpm, sometimes in the 40s. This happens because regular aerobic exercise makes the heart muscle stronger and larger. A stronger heart pushes out more blood per contraction, so it doesn’t need to beat as often to meet the body’s demands at rest. This is one of the clearest, most measurable benefits of consistent cardiovascular training.

A resting rate below 60 bpm in someone who exercises regularly is not a medical concern. It only becomes an issue if it comes with dizziness, fatigue, or fainting, which could indicate an electrical problem with the heart rather than a fitness adaptation.

Higher Rates Carry Real Health Risks

The 60 to 100 bpm “normal” range is broad, and the upper end is not as safe as the label implies. A large study tracking men over 16 years found that for every 10 bpm increase in resting heart rate, the risk of dying from any cause went up by about 16%. The numbers are striking when you compare groups directly: men with resting rates above 90 bpm had roughly three times the mortality risk compared to men whose rates sat at 50 bpm or below. Even rates in the 51 to 80 range carried a 40 to 50% higher risk compared to that lowest group.

This relationship held for both smokers and nonsmokers, though the effect was slightly steeper in smokers (a 20% increase in risk per 10 bpm, versus 14% in nonsmokers). A persistently elevated resting heart rate can signal that the heart is working harder than it should at baseline, which over years places extra strain on the cardiovascular system.

None of this means a single reading of 85 bpm is dangerous. It means that if your resting rate consistently trends higher, improving your cardiovascular fitness can bring it down and reduce long-term risk.

What Can Temporarily Change Your Rate

Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It fluctuates day to day and even hour to hour based on several factors:

  • Caffeine and stimulants: Coffee, energy drinks, and stimulant medications like those used for ADHD can push your rate up noticeably.
  • Stress and anxiety: Emotional stress triggers your body’s fight-or-flight response, which speeds up the heart even when you’re sitting still.
  • Temperature: Hot weather or a fever increases your heart rate as your body works harder to cool itself.
  • Dehydration: When blood volume drops from not drinking enough water, the heart compensates by beating faster.
  • Body position: Your rate may tick up slightly when you first stand after sitting or lying down.
  • Medications: Beta blockers and calcium channel blockers lower heart rate, while certain antidepressants can raise it.
  • Sleep: Your heart rate naturally drops during sleep, sometimes significantly below your daytime resting rate.

Because of all these variables, a single reading doesn’t tell you much. Trends over time are far more useful.

How to Measure It Accurately

The best time to check your resting heart rate is first thing in the morning, right after waking up, before you get out of bed or drink coffee. You should be awake, calm, and not moving.

Place two fingers (your index and middle finger) on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two, or count for a full 60 seconds for a more precise number. Wearable fitness trackers and smartwatches also measure resting heart rate continuously and average it over time, which can give you a clearer picture of your baseline than a single manual check.

If you want to track meaningful changes, measure at the same time each day for at least a week. A single morning reading of 72 is less informative than knowing your seven-day average sits around 72. That average is what reflects your actual cardiovascular baseline, and it’s what will shift downward if you start exercising more consistently.
