The point where lactate first rises above baseline (around 2 mmol/L) marks your first lactate threshold, and the heart rate at that moment becomes the ceiling of your personal Zone 2. Some facilities measure the same boundary through ventilatory thresholds during a VO2 max test, which avoids the blood draws entirely.
These tests typically cost $100 to $250 and are offered at sports performance labs, some physical therapy clinics, and university exercise science departments. For most people pursuing general fitness, the combination of a heart rate formula and the talk test is good enough. But if you’re training for endurance events or find that formula-based zones don’t match how you feel, a lab test removes the guesswork.
