What Makes a Robot? Sensors, Brain, and Actuators

A robot is any machine that can sense its environment, process that information, and act on it without continuous human control. That three-part loop, often called “sense, think, act,” is the simplest way to distinguish a robot from an ordinary machine. A dishwasher runs a fixed cycle. A robotic vacuum detects furniture, decides on a new path, and drives around it. The difference is the ability to perceive and respond.

The Sense-Think-Act Loop

Every robot, from a warehouse arm to a Mars rover, follows the same basic cycle. First, it gathers data about its surroundings through sensors. Then, a processor interprets that data and makes a decision. Finally, motors or other moving parts carry out the decision. The cycle repeats continuously, sometimes hundreds of times per second, letting the robot adapt to changing conditions in real time.

This loop is what separates a robot from a simple automated machine. A conveyor belt moves boxes along a fixed path regardless of what’s happening around it. A robot on that same factory floor can detect a misaligned package, decide how to grip it, and place it correctly. The key threshold is autonomy: machines require human intervention to adjust, while robots can operate independently once programmed.

Sensors: How Robots Perceive the World

Sensors are a robot’s equivalent of eyes, ears, and skin. They fall into two broad categories. External sensors detect the outside world: cameras for vision, ultrasonic sensors that bounce sound waves off objects to measure distance, infrared sensors for detecting heat or proximity, and tactile sensors that register pressure and contact. Internal sensors track the robot’s own body, measuring things like joint angles, acceleration, and orientation.

LiDAR is one of the most important sensing technologies in modern robotics. It fires rapid laser pulses and measures how long they take to bounce back, building a detailed 3D map of the surrounding space. Self-driving cars, delivery robots, and agricultural machines all rely on LiDAR for navigation and obstacle detection. Greenhouse robots, for example, combine 3D and 2D LiDAR with mapping software to navigate rows of plants without crushing anything.

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) handle a different job. These small sensors combine accelerometers and gyroscopes to track a robot’s movement, tilt, and rotation. They update position data rapidly and cheaply, which makes them essential for indoor robots that can’t rely on GPS. Some snake-like robots use IMU-based navigation systems to move through tight, unpredictable spaces. Ultrasonic sensors fill yet another niche, helping mobile robots detect nearby obstacles and navigate through cluttered environments like orchards or warehouses.

The Brain: Processing and Decision-Making

Raw sensor data is useless without something to interpret it. That job falls to a microcontroller or microprocessor, the robot’s central brain. A microcontroller is essentially a tiny computer on a single chip, containing a processor, memory, and input/output interfaces all in one package. It’s optimized for real-time tasks: reading a sensor, running a calculation, and sending a command to a motor in microseconds.

Different robots need different levels of processing power. A simple line-following robot might use a PIC microcontroller, one of the smallest and cheapest options available, common in home automation and basic robotics. A more complex robot, like one navigating a construction site, might use an ARM-based processor capable of handling camera feeds, mapping, and path planning simultaneously. At the high end, robots performing tasks like real-time video processing or complex decision-making may use specialized chips called FPGAs, which can be reconfigured at the hardware level for demanding workloads.

The software running on these chips is where “thinking” actually happens. Simple robots follow decision trees: if the sensor reads less than 30 centimeters, turn left. Advanced robots use machine learning models that improve over time, or layered control architectures where low-level reflexes (stop before hitting something) override higher-level goals (go to the kitchen).

Actuators: How Robots Move and Act

Actuators are the parts that let a robot physically do things. Electric motors are the most common type, spinning wheels, rotating joints, or driving conveyor belts. Hydraulic actuators use pressurized fluid for heavy-duty tasks like construction equipment. Pneumatic actuators use compressed air and are popular in factory settings where quick, repetitive motions are needed.

Not all actuators are rigid. Soft robotics is a growing field that replaces metal joints with flexible materials that bend, stretch, and deform. These soft actuators respond to stimuli like air pressure, electric fields, temperature changes, or even light. A pneumatic soft actuator, for instance, is built around a flexible chamber that inflates and deflates to create motion. Researchers have designed conical soft actuators inspired by octopus tentacles and textile-based actuators modeled after caterpillar movement and Venus flytraps. The advantage is safety and adaptability: a soft gripper can pick up a tomato without bruising it, something a rigid metal claw struggles with.

Fabric-based pneumatic actuators represent one of the newer developments in this space. Built from woven, knitted, or non-woven textiles, they achieve mechanical motion through internal pressure changes in flexible chambers. The choice of fabric type directly shapes how the actuator bends, how much force it generates, and how reliably it performs over time.

Power: What Keeps Robots Running

Most mobile robots run on lithium-ion batteries, the same basic technology in your phone or laptop. A typical military-grade lithium-ion battery used in mobile robotics weighs about 1.4 kilograms and delivers a maximum of 350 watts. That’s enough to power a mid-sized ground robot for a few hours of active operation, depending on terrain and payload.

Battery life is one of the biggest constraints in robotics. Lithium-ion batteries store about 0.72 megajoules of energy per kilogram. Diesel fuel stores 46 megajoules per kilogram, roughly 64 times more. That enormous gap is why larger robots and autonomous vehicles sometimes use hybrid systems or generators for extended missions. Batteries do have one advantage: they deliver power more efficiently relative to their weight in short bursts, which matters for robots that need quick acceleration or rapid movements.

Stationary robots, like factory arms, sidestep the battery problem entirely by plugging into wall power. This is why industrial robots can operate 24 hours a day while mobile robots need regular recharging or battery swaps.

What Separates Robots From Simple Machines

The core distinction comes down to autonomy and adaptability. A machine performs a fixed task, simple or complex, but needs a human to adjust it when conditions change. A robot senses those changes and adjusts on its own. A programmable coffee maker runs on a timer. A robot barista can detect the size of a cup, measure ingredients, and adjust its movements if someone places the cup slightly off-center.

Complexity matters too. Robots are designed to handle tasks like inspection, assembly, and surveillance that require interpreting variable inputs. A stamping press does one motion millions of times. A robotic arm on the same assembly line can switch between welding, painting, and sorting based on what the production schedule demands.

Collaborative Robots and Human Interaction

One of the fastest-growing categories is the collaborative robot, or cobot, designed to work alongside people rather than behind safety cages. Cobots have built-in safety controls that prevent hazardous contact. The International Organization for Standardization requires cobots to use at least one of four safety measures, the most common being speed and separation monitoring: sensors detect a nearby worker, and the robot automatically slows down, changes direction, or stops completely depending on how close the person is.

Another approach is hand-guided control, where the cobot moves only when a human operator physically guides it. This makes cobots useful for tasks where human judgment and robotic precision need to work together, like positioning heavy parts during assembly. The safety sensors, processors, and compliant actuators in a cobot are the same fundamental components found in any robot, just tuned for close human proximity rather than maximum speed or force.
