A reliable source presents accurate, well-supported information from a qualified author or organization, with transparent methods and minimal hidden bias. A credible source earns trust through verifiable expertise, a track record of accuracy, and clear disclosure of who created it and why. These two qualities overlap heavily, but reliability points more toward factual consistency while credibility points toward the trustworthiness of the person or institution behind the information.
Evaluating sources is a skill, not a gut feeling. There are specific things to look for and concrete strategies to verify what you find online, in print, or on social media.
Five Core Criteria to Evaluate Any Source
Librarians and educators widely use a framework built around five criteria: currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. These work for everything from a news article to a scientific study to a YouTube video.
Currency asks whether the information is up to date. A 2010 article about smartphone security isn’t useful in 2025. Some topics, like historical events, are less time-sensitive. Others, like medical treatments or technology, can become outdated within a few years. Check the publication or posting date and ask whether anything significant has changed since then.
Relevance is about fit. Was this written for the general public, for specialists, or for a specific political audience? A source can be perfectly accurate but pitched at the wrong level or focused on a different angle than what you need.
Authority means the author or organization has genuine expertise. Look for credentials, professional affiliations, and contact information. A cardiologist writing about heart disease carries more weight than an anonymous blog post. When an organization publishes the content, check who funds it and who runs it.
Accuracy is the most important criterion. Reliable sources cite their evidence, link to original data, use measured and professional language, and support their claims with documentation. Watch for emotional or sensational language, which often signals that persuasion matters more than precision. If an article makes bold claims but provides no citations, footnotes, or links to supporting evidence, treat it with skepticism.
Purpose asks why the source exists. Was it created to inform, to teach, to sell something, or to persuade? An article from a pharmaceutical company about its own drug has a different purpose than an independent clinical review of that same drug. Neither is automatically wrong, but knowing the motivation helps you weigh the information appropriately.
How Domain Names Signal (and Don’t Signal) Trust
Government websites ending in .gov are restricted to verified U.S.-based government organizations. Requesters must be government employees or work on behalf of the government in a technological, administrative, or executive capacity, and they must verify their identity. This makes .gov domains relatively trustworthy for official data, statistics, and policy information.
Similarly, .edu domains are limited to accredited educational institutions. Content on university library sites, for instance, tends to go through institutional review. That said, individual student pages hosted on .edu domains don’t carry the same weight as official university publications.
A .com or .org domain tells you almost nothing by itself. Anyone can register these. Plenty of excellent journalism lives on .com domains, and some .org sites exist primarily to advocate for a specific agenda. The domain is a starting clue, not a verdict.
Primary vs. Secondary Sources
Primary sources present original, unfiltered information: a scientific study published in a journal, raw survey data, a court transcript, a patent filing, or an interview. Secondary sources interpret, analyze, or comment on primary sources. Review articles, textbooks, magazine features, and encyclopedias all fall into this category.
Neither type is inherently better. Primary sources give you the original evidence, which lets you draw your own conclusions. But they can be dense and hard to interpret without background knowledge. Secondary sources provide context and expert analysis, making complex findings accessible. The most reliable approach is to read the secondary source for understanding and then check the primary source to confirm the claims weren’t distorted or taken out of context.
What Peer Review Actually Does
Peer-reviewed research goes through a structured evaluation before publication. After a paper is submitted, an editor assesses whether it fits the journal’s scope and has enough merit to move forward. If it does, the editor sends it to independent experts in the same field who read it multiple times, flag methodological problems, check whether the data supports the conclusions, and recommend whether to accept, revise, or reject it.
This process catches significant errors and filters out weak research, which is why peer-reviewed journals are considered the gold standard for scientific evidence. But peer review has limits. It doesn’t guarantee that a study’s conclusions are correct. It catches flawed methods more reliably than it catches fraud. And the quality of review varies between journals.
One common shortcut people use is checking a journal’s impact factor, which measures how often its articles get cited. A higher number generally means more influence in the field. But impact factor reflects citation averages across the journal, not the quality of any individual article. Journals that publish more review articles tend to have inflated impact factors because reviews get cited frequently. Using impact factor to judge a single paper or a single researcher is a well-documented misuse of the metric.
Follow the Money and the Motive
Funding doesn’t automatically corrupt research, but it can introduce bias. The Committee on Publication Ethics recommends that journals require authors to disclose their exact funding sources, which authors received financial support, and what activities the funding covered. Most reputable journals publish these statements at the end of the article, often alongside a separate conflicts of interest declaration.
When you’re reading a study or report, scroll to the funding and disclosure section. If a study on sugary drinks was funded entirely by a beverage company, that doesn’t mean the findings are wrong, but it means you should look for independent studies that reached similar conclusions. The key question is whether the funder had a financial interest in the outcome.
This applies beyond academia. A product review on a site that earns affiliate commissions from the products it reviews has a built-in conflict. A think tank funded by a specific industry will tend to publish research favorable to that industry. Transparency about funding is itself a marker of credibility. Sources that hide their financial backing deserve extra scrutiny.
Lateral Reading: How Fact-Checkers Verify Sources
Professional fact-checkers don’t spend much time scrutinizing a website’s design or “About” page. Instead, they use a strategy called lateral reading: they leave the source quickly and open new tabs to see what other, trusted sources say about it.
This is the single most effective habit for evaluating unfamiliar sources. Rather than trying to judge a website on its own terms, you check what credible outside sources say about the organization, the author, and the specific claims being made. Specific moves include searching for the author or organization on Wikipedia, checking whether other established news outlets are reporting the same story, running a reverse image search on photos to see where they originally appeared, and checking whether fact-checking organizations have already investigated the claim.
The SIFT method formalizes this into four steps. First, stop before reacting or sharing, especially if the headline triggers a strong emotional response. Second, investigate the source by looking up who created it and what their track record looks like. Third, find better coverage by searching for the same topic from sources you already trust. Fourth, trace claims back to their original context by clicking through links and citations to see whether the original research or quote actually says what the article claims it does. That last step catches a surprising amount of misinformation, because many misleading stories are built on real data that’s been cherry-picked or stripped of important context.
Spotting Manipulated and Synthetic Content
AI-generated text, images, and video have made source evaluation harder. Manipulated images are becoming more surgical and precise, with small, targeted edits rather than entirely fabricated scenes. These subtle modifications are far more difficult to detect than obviously fake images from a few years ago.
Some red flags still help. Blurred or annotated sections in video evidence can indicate manipulation. Voice comparison techniques are increasingly used to verify whether audio clips are authentic. But detection tools have significant gaps, particularly with content in languages that weren’t well represented in the tools’ training data.
For everyday evaluation, the best defense against synthetic content isn’t trying to spot pixel-level artifacts. It’s the same lateral reading strategy that works for any dubious claim: check whether the story appears in multiple independent, credible outlets. If a dramatic video or quote is circulating on social media but no established news organization is reporting on it, that’s a strong signal to wait before believing or sharing it.
Quick Checks That Cover Most Situations
- Authorship: Can you identify who wrote or produced this, and can you verify their expertise? Anonymous content with no organizational backing is a red flag.
- Citations and evidence: Does the source link to or reference its underlying data? Reliable sources show their work.
- Language and tone: Objective, measured writing signals reliability. Emotional, urgent, or absolutist language often signals persuasion over accuracy.
- Multiple confirmation: Can you find the same core facts reported independently by other credible sources? A claim that appears in only one place deserves skepticism.
- Recency: Is the information current enough for the topic? Medical and scientific information can shift substantially in just a few years.
- Transparency: Does the source disclose its funding, its potential conflicts of interest, and its methodology? Willingness to be transparent is one of the strongest indicators of credibility.
