Cat allergies aren’t caused by fur itself. They’re triggered by a protein called Fel d 1 that cats produce in their skin glands, salivary glands, and anal glands. About 15% of the global population is allergic to cats, making it one of the most common animal allergies. When your immune system encounters Fel d 1 and mistakenly flags it as a threat, it launches an inflammatory response that produces the sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion you associate with being near a cat.
The Protein Behind the Reaction
Fel d 1 is the dominant allergen responsible for cat allergies. It belongs to a family of proteins called secretoglobins, and it’s produced primarily in three places: the sebaceous glands in a cat’s skin, the salivary glands, and the anal glands. The skin alone produces a measurable amount of this protein daily, even without any saliva being spread through grooming.
This is why the popular belief that cat hair causes allergies is misleading. Hair is simply the vehicle. When cats groom themselves, they coat their fur in saliva loaded with Fel d 1. As the saliva dries, the protein becomes airborne on tiny flakes of skin (dander) or attaches to hair that sheds around your home. About 75% of cat dander particles measure 5 to 10 microns across, small enough to float in indoor air for extended periods. Roughly 25% are smaller than 2.5 microns, a size that rarely settles on surfaces and easily relaunches into the air with any disturbance.
This is what makes cat allergens uniquely persistent compared to other pet allergens. Fel d 1 particles are so small and sticky that they’ve been found in homes, schools, and offices where no cat has ever lived, carried in on clothing and shoes.
Why Your Immune System Overreacts
In a person with a cat allergy, the immune system treats Fel d 1 like a dangerous invader. The first time you’re exposed, your body may produce a type of antibody called IgE that’s specifically shaped to recognize Fel d 1. These antibodies attach to immune cells in your nose, eyes, lungs, and skin, essentially arming them.
On subsequent exposures, when Fel d 1 lands on those armed cells, it triggers the release of histamine and other inflammatory chemicals. That’s what causes the familiar symptoms: a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and in more sensitive people, coughing, wheezing, or skin hives. For people with asthma, cat allergen exposure can trigger full asthma attacks. The reaction can happen within minutes of entering a room where a cat lives, or even where a cat owner has been sitting.
Some Cats Produce Far More Allergen Than Others
Not all cats are equally allergenic. Sex and reproductive status have a major impact on how much Fel d 1 a cat produces. A study of 74 cats published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that intact (unneutered) male cats produced dramatically more allergen than any other group. Intact males averaged 5.46 units of Fel d 1 per gram of fur, compared to 1.53 for intact females and 1.28 for neutered males. That means an unneutered male cat produces roughly three and a half times more allergen than a female cat.
Neutering made a significant difference for males, dropping their allergen levels to a range comparable to female cats. Spaying females, on the other hand, didn’t meaningfully change their production levels. The highest-producing group, intact males, accounted for 71% of cats in the top quartile for allergen concentration, while no intact females fell in that range at all. If you’re allergic and choosing a cat, a female or neutered male will typically expose you to substantially less Fel d 1.
The “Hypoallergenic” Cat Question
Certain breeds, particularly Siberians, Balinese, and Russian Blues, are marketed as hypoallergenic. There is some basis for this: researchers have detected potentially relevant mutations in the Fel d 1 genes of Siberian cats, and reduced levels of the allergen in their fur have been reported. But no cat breed is truly allergen-free. Every cat produces Fel d 1 to some degree, and individual variation within a breed can be enormous. A particular Siberian might produce less allergen than average, but another individual of the same breed might produce just as much as a common domestic shorthair. Reduced allergen levels have also proven difficult to breed for consistently.
How Cat Allergies Are Diagnosed
If you suspect a cat allergy, a skin prick test is the most common way to confirm it. A tiny amount of cat allergen extract is placed on your skin, usually on your forearm, and the skin is lightly pricked so the extract enters the surface layer. If you’re allergic, you’ll develop a small raised bump (wheal) within about 15 minutes. In clinical testing, cat allergen skin prick tests show sensitivity above 95%, meaning they correctly identify almost all truly allergic individuals. Blood tests that measure cat-specific IgE antibodies are an alternative when skin testing isn’t practical.
Reducing Allergen Exposure at Home
Because Fel d 1 particles are so small and persistent, standard cleaning alone won’t eliminate them. HEPA air purifiers offer the most measurable improvement. In a clinical trial, HEPA filtration reduced airborne cat allergen concentrations from about 80 nanograms per cubic meter to roughly 14, a reduction of more than 80%. Placing units in the rooms where you spend the most time, especially bedrooms, makes the biggest difference.
Keeping cats out of the bedroom entirely, washing hands after touching a cat, and vacuuming with a HEPA-equipped vacuum all help reduce contact. Washing cats themselves can temporarily lower the allergen on their fur, but levels return to baseline within a day or two, making it an impractical long-term strategy for most people.
One newer approach targets the allergen at its source. Specialized cat foods now contain an antibody (derived from egg yolk) that binds to Fel d 1 in a cat’s saliva as the cat chews. When the cat grooms, the neutralized protein is spread to the fur instead of the active form. Studies have confirmed that cats eating this diet carry significantly less active Fel d 1 on their hair, with the heaviest producers showing the greatest reductions.
Treatment Options for Allergic People
For managing symptoms directly, over-the-counter antihistamines and nasal corticosteroid sprays are the first line of defense. They work by blocking or reducing the histamine response that causes congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes.
Allergen immunotherapy is the only treatment that can change the underlying immune response rather than just masking symptoms. It works by gradually exposing your immune system to increasing amounts of cat allergen over months or years, training it to tolerate the protein. This is available as regular injections (typically weekly at first, then monthly for three to five years) or as sublingual tablets placed under the tongue. Many people see a meaningful reduction in symptoms, though the process requires patience and consistency.
