Night sweats happen when your body’s internal thermostat overreacts, triggering your sweat glands while you sleep. Sometimes the cause is as simple as a warm bedroom or heavy blankets. Other times, it signals something going on inside your body, from hormone shifts to medications to underlying medical conditions. Understanding the difference helps you figure out whether you need to adjust your sleep setup or talk to a doctor.
How Your Body Controls Temperature at Night
A small region at the front of your brain acts as your body’s thermostat. It maintains a “set point” for core temperature and constantly monitors whether you’re running too hot or too cold. When your core temperature rises above that set point, your brain activates your sympathetic nervous system, which triggers sweat glands across your skin. The evaporation of that sweat pulls heat away from your body and brings your temperature back down.
Your core temperature naturally fluctuates throughout the day. It peaks around 37.5°C (99.5°F) in the afternoon and drops to about 36.3°C (97.3°F) in the predawn hours. That downward shift is part of what helps you fall and stay asleep. But if something disrupts this cooling process or tricks your brain into thinking you’re overheating, you wake up drenched.
Your Bedroom May Be Too Warm
The simplest explanation is often the right one. If your room is too hot, your body will sweat to compensate. Sleep specialists recommend keeping your bedroom between 60 and 67°F (15 to 19°C). Heavy comforters, memory foam mattresses that trap heat, and synthetic pajamas can all push your skin temperature up even when the room itself is cool enough. Before investigating medical causes, it’s worth ruling out your sleep environment first.
Hormonal Shifts, Especially During Menopause
Hormonal changes are one of the most common medical reasons for night sweats. Roughly 85% of women experience hot flashes during perimenopause and early menopause. A population-based study found that 79% of perimenopausal women and 65% of postmenopausal women between ages 40 and 65 reported these symptoms.
The mechanism involves estrogen. When estrogen levels drop, levels of a brain chemical called norepinephrine rise. Norepinephrine narrows what researchers call the “thermoneutral zone,” the range of core temperatures your body tolerates before launching a heating or cooling response. With that zone compressed, even tiny temperature fluctuations that your body would normally ignore can trigger a full sweat response. That’s why menopausal hot flashes and night sweats often come on suddenly and intensely, then pass within minutes.
Thyroid disorders can cause a similar effect. An overactive thyroid speeds up your metabolism and raises your baseline body temperature, making nighttime sweating more likely. Diabetes can also trigger night sweats, particularly when blood sugar drops too low during sleep, which activates your body’s stress response.
Medications That Cause Sweating
Several common medications list night sweats as a side effect. Antidepressants, particularly SSRIs like citalopram, are frequently associated with episodes of excessive sweating that often worsen at night. These drugs alter serotonin levels, which in turn affects your brain’s temperature regulation.
Other medications that can trigger sweating include certain pain relievers, hormonal medications, and drugs used to manage diabetes. If your night sweats started around the same time you began a new medication, that timing is worth noting. Stopping or switching medications without medical guidance isn’t recommended, but knowing the connection gives you a useful starting point for a conversation with your prescriber.
Sleep Apnea and Night Sweats
Obstructive sleep apnea, a condition where your airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, has a surprisingly strong link to night sweats. About 30% of people with sleep apnea report them, compared to roughly 12% of people without the condition.
The connection comes down to oxygen and stress. When your airway closes, your blood oxygen drops. Your body responds by partially waking you up to reopen the airway, and these frequent awakenings spike your sympathetic nervous system, the same “fight or flight” system that triggers sweating. If you also snore loudly, wake up gasping, or feel exhausted despite a full night of sleep, sleep apnea may be worth investigating.
Infections and Immune Responses
Night sweats are a classic symptom of several infections. Tuberculosis is historically the most well-known cause, but bacterial infections of the heart valves (endocarditis) and various other chronic infections can produce drenching sweats at night. The mechanism is straightforward: your immune system releases chemicals that reset your brain’s temperature set point higher, creating a fever. When the fever breaks, your body sweats aggressively to cool back down. This cycle often intensifies at night because of the natural drop in core temperature your body is already trying to make.
Even common viral infections can cause temporary night sweats. These typically resolve on their own as you recover.
When Night Sweats Signal Something Serious
Lymphoma and certain other cancers can cause what’s often described as “drenching” night sweats, the kind that soak through your clothes and sheets. This is different from mild dampness or occasional warmth. The sweating tends to be persistent and recurring rather than a one-off event.
Certain red flags alongside night sweats warrant prompt medical attention. Clinicians look for unintentional weight loss of more than 5% of your body weight over six to twelve months, persistent fevers, unexplained fatigue, easy bruising or bleeding, and swollen lymph nodes. Lymph nodes that remain swollen for more than four to six weeks alongside night sweats are particularly concerning.
None of these signs automatically mean cancer. But the combination of drenching night sweats with any of these additional symptoms is a pattern doctors take seriously and evaluate quickly.
Sorting Out the Cause
Night sweats range from a minor nuisance to an important clinical clue. The practical approach is to work from simple to complex. Start with your environment: drop the thermostat to the 60 to 67°F range, switch to breathable bedding, and see if the problem resolves. If it doesn’t, consider whether you’ve recently started a new medication or are in a life stage where hormonal changes are expected.
If your night sweats are frequent, intense enough to soak your bedding, or accompanied by weight loss, fevers, or swollen glands, those details matter. Keeping a brief log of when the sweats happen, how severe they are, and what other symptoms accompany them gives your doctor a much clearer picture to work with than a general complaint of “I sweat at night.”
