What Manages Hardware and Software: The Operating System

The operating system (OS) is the software that manages all hardware and software on a computer, phone, or tablet. It acts as a go-between, connecting the apps you use every day to the physical components inside your device: the processor, memory, storage drive, screen, and every plugged-in peripheral. Without it, your hardware would have no instructions and your software would have no way to reach the hardware it depends on.

What an Operating System Actually Does

At its core, an operating system performs a handful of critical jobs: it manages memory, schedules processor time, controls storage, handles input and output from devices like keyboards and printers, and keeps different programs from stepping on each other. It coordinates all of these tasks simultaneously so that each program gets the resources it needs without crashing or freezing the system.

The most widely used operating systems globally reflect how many different devices need this kind of management. Android holds roughly 36% of the worldwide market across all device types, Windows accounts for about 31%, and iOS covers around 17%. On desktops and laptops, Windows and macOS dominate. On servers, Linux distributions run the majority of the internet’s infrastructure. Each of these operating systems handles the same fundamental job, just tailored to different hardware and different user needs.

The Kernel: The Core Manager

Inside every operating system sits a component called the kernel. It is the first major piece of software loaded when you power on your device (right after the initial boot sequence), and it stays in memory the entire time the system is running. The kernel is the true bridge between software and hardware. When an app needs to display something on your screen, it doesn’t talk to the display directly. Instead, it sends a request to the kernel, which forwards it to the appropriate driver, which then tells the screen what to draw.

The kernel also plays referee. When multiple programs compete for the same resource, like processor time or access to a file, the kernel prevents conflicts and decides who goes first. It handles switching the processor’s attention between tasks (called context switching), synchronizes communication between running programs, and controls every hardware resource through specialized software called device drivers.

How Memory Gets Managed

Your computer’s RAM is a finite resource, and the operating system is responsible for dividing it up among every running program. Each application gets its own logical address space, a kind of private map of memory that the OS translates into actual physical locations in your RAM chips. A dedicated hardware component called the memory management unit handles this translation at high speed.

To make this work efficiently, the OS breaks physical memory into small fixed-size blocks called frames, typically between 512 bytes and 8,192 bytes. Each program’s memory is divided into matching blocks called pages. This system, called paging, means a program’s data doesn’t have to sit in one continuous chunk of RAM. Pieces can be scattered across whatever physical memory happens to be available.

When RAM fills up, the OS can temporarily move inactive data out to your storage drive (a process called swapping) and pull it back when needed. This is why a computer with many open programs might slow down: the system is shuffling data between fast RAM and a comparatively slower drive.

Processor Scheduling

Your CPU can only execute one task per core at any given instant, yet dozens or even hundreds of processes may be running at once. The operating system’s scheduler decides which process gets the CPU next and for how long. Whenever the CPU becomes idle, the scheduler picks another process from a waiting list called the ready queue.

Modern operating systems use preemptive scheduling, meaning the OS can interrupt a running process and hand the CPU to something more urgent. This relies on a hardware timer that fires at regular intervals, giving the OS a chance to reassess priorities. One common approach is round-robin scheduling, where each process gets a small time slice. When the slice expires, the process moves to the back of the line and the next one takes its turn. This creates the illusion that your computer is doing many things at once, even on a single-core processor.

The length of that time slice matters. Too long, and other programs feel sluggish while one hogs the processor. Too short, and the system wastes time constantly switching between tasks instead of doing useful work.

Device Drivers and Hardware Communication

Every piece of hardware attached to your computer, from your graphics card to a USB microphone, needs a device driver. A driver is a small piece of software that knows how to speak the specific language of one particular hardware component. The operating system uses these drivers so that apps don’t need to know (or care) what brand of printer or display you have. They just make a generic request, and the OS routes it through the correct driver.

Sitting on top of this is a concept called the hardware abstraction layer (HAL). It provides a standard interface so that hardware manufacturers can write code for their specific devices without affecting anything else in the system. This is why you can swap out a graphics card or plug in a new webcam and your apps keep working: the abstraction layer shields the rest of the software from hardware-specific details.

File and Storage Management

The operating system also organizes everything stored on your drives. It maintains a file system that tracks where each file physically lives on disk, along with metadata like the file’s name, size, type, creation date, and access permissions. When you open, save, rename, or delete a file, the OS handles the underlying disk operations.

A single physical drive can be split into multiple partitions, each acting as its own virtual disk with its own file system. The reverse is also possible: multiple physical drives can be combined into a single volume that appears as one large disk. Files on disk are accessed in units called blocks, typically 512 bytes or larger powers of two. Larger drives tend to use bigger block sizes to keep the system’s internal bookkeeping manageable.

The OS also manages file access when multiple programs try to use the same file simultaneously. It tracks how many processes have a file open and can enforce locking. Some systems use mandatory locks that prevent conflicting access entirely, while others use advisory locks that inform programs about conflicts but don’t force compliance. Windows uses mandatory locking by default, while Unix-based systems traditionally rely on advisory locks.

How Apps Talk to the OS

Applications can’t access hardware directly. Instead, they use system calls, a controlled set of requests that the OS exposes as an interface. When a program needs to write data to a file, display text on screen, or send information over the network, it triggers a system call. This mechanism exists for safety: if any app could directly control hardware, a single buggy program could crash the entire system or corrupt another program’s data.

The process works in a specific sequence. The application prepares its request and hands it off to the operating system through a special instruction that switches the processor from normal mode into a protected kernel mode. The kernel identifies what’s being asked, carries out the operation (like writing bytes to disk), then switches back to normal mode and returns control to the application. This back-and-forth happens thousands of times per second, invisibly, every time you use your computer.

Security at the Hardware Level

Modern operating systems also manage hardware-based security features built into your device. Many computers include a dedicated security chip called a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) that stores encryption keys and verifies that the system’s software hasn’t been tampered with during startup. Windows uses TPM automatically for drive encryption and for runtime protections that guard stored passwords and credentials. Linux distributions can be configured to use TPM for drive encryption and for monitoring the integrity of the operating system’s core.

Operating systems also leverage virtualization features in modern processors to create isolated environments. This lets the OS run sensitive security processes in a separate, protected space that even a compromised application can’t reach. Features like virtualization-based security on Windows and container technology on Linux depend on this hardware support, which is why older machines lacking these processor features can’t use the latest security protections.

Real-Time vs. General-Purpose Systems

Not every operating system is built for the same kind of work. The Windows, macOS, and Linux systems most people use are general-purpose operating systems (GPOS), designed to run a wide variety of apps with user-friendly interfaces. Timing precision isn’t their priority.

Real-time operating systems (RTOS) take a different approach. They’re built for situations where a response must happen within a guaranteed time window: medical devices, industrial robots, automotive systems, flight controllers. An RTOS provides predictable, deterministic scheduling, meaning you can rely on a task completing within a specific number of microseconds. It manages the same core resources (processor time, memory, peripherals) but optimizes for responsiveness over flexibility. If your car’s antilock braking system ran on a general-purpose OS that occasionally paused to update a background app, the results could be catastrophic.
