If your dog has seizures, certain foods can directly trigger or worsen episodes. The most important things to eliminate are chocolate, xylitol (a sugar substitute), excessive salt, and high-carbohydrate treats. Beyond those well-known dangers, subtler dietary factors like MSG and rapid blood sugar swings can also lower your dog’s seizure threshold. Here’s what to keep off the menu and why.
Chocolate and Caffeine
Chocolate is dangerous for all dogs, but it poses a particular risk for seizure-prone ones. The culprit is theobromine, a stimulant that dogs metabolize far more slowly than humans. Seizures can occur at doses of 60 mg/kg of body weight or higher, while milder symptoms like vomiting and excessive thirst start around 20 mg/kg. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain the highest concentrations of theobromine, sometimes 10 to 15 times more than milk chocolate per ounce.
Caffeine works through a nearly identical mechanism, and its toxic dose in dogs is similar to theobromine’s. Coffee grounds, energy drinks, caffeine pills, and even tea bags all pose a risk. For a dog already prone to seizures, even a sub-toxic amount of either substance could be enough to push the brain past its threshold.
Xylitol (Birch Sugar)
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum, candy, peanut butter, baked goods, and some toothpastes. In dogs, it triggers a massive, rapid release of insulin that peaks about 45 minutes after ingestion. That insulin surge crashes blood sugar to dangerously low levels. When a dog’s blood glucose drops below roughly 18 to 34 mg/dL, the brain loses its fuel supply, a state called neuroglycopenia, and seizures follow.
This reaction is uniquely severe in dogs. Humans and cats don’t experience the same dramatic insulin spike from xylitol. Always check the ingredient label on any peanut butter or “sugar-free” product before sharing it with your dog, especially one with a seizure history.
Salty Foods and Table Scraps
Excess sodium is a direct seizure trigger. When a dog ingests a large amount of salt, sodium levels in the blood rise sharply, pulling water out of brain cells and causing cerebral swelling. In one documented case, a dog that ate a salt-flour modeling clay mixture developed continuous seizure activity. Its serum sodium measured 211 mEq/L, far above the normal range of 145 to 158 mEq/L, and brain sodium levels confirmed salt toxicosis.
You don’t need to worry about the moderate sodium in commercial dog food, but avoid giving your seizure-prone dog salty human foods like chips, pretzels, cured meats, soy sauce, or anything with visible salt crusting. Homemade play dough (which is essentially salt and flour) is a surprisingly common source of salt poisoning in dogs.
High-Carbohydrate Treats
For dogs on a seizure-management diet, carbohydrates can be a direct problem. Rapid blood sugar spikes and crashes appear to destabilize brain activity. In a published case study from the journal Epilepsia Open, a dog with epilepsy achieved complete seizure control through a low-carb diet, only to have seizures return exclusively when well-meaning family members fed him high-glycemic treats like pizza crust. The relationship was clear: when there were no lapses in the diet, seizures did not occur.
The clinical notes from that report are striking. Loss of seizure control happened within an hour of carbohydrate exposure, sometimes from surprisingly small amounts. This doesn’t mean every dog with epilepsy will react this dramatically, but it does mean you should avoid casually tossing your dog bread, pasta, crackers, or sugary treats if seizures are a concern. White rice, while commonly used for upset stomachs, is also high-glycemic and worth discussing with your vet.
Foods Containing MSG
Monosodium glutamate, commonly called MSG, increases levels of free glutamate in the brain. Glutamate is the brain’s primary excitatory neurotransmitter, and in excess it can overstimulate neurons and disrupt the balance between excitation and inhibition that keeps seizures in check. This overactivation causes a flood of calcium ions into nerve cells, which can trigger seizure activity.
MSG shows up in many processed foods that owners might share with their dogs: deli meats, flavored chips, canned soups, broth cubes, and some commercial dog treats. Check labels for “monosodium glutamate,” “hydrolyzed protein,” or “autolyzed yeast,” all of which indicate added free glutamate. For a dog with epilepsy, keeping dietary glutamate low is a reasonable precaution.
Rosemary Oil and Certain Herbal Additives
Rosemary extract is a common natural preservative in dog food, and for most dogs it’s harmless. But rosemary essential oil contains camphor and a compound called 1,8-cineole, both of which have documented proconvulsive effects. In humans with epilepsy, exposure to rosemary oil has triggered breakthrough seizures, including in a patient who relapsed after a massage with a rosemary-containing oil blend.
The distinction matters: rosemary extract used as a food preservative contains far lower concentrations of these compounds than the essential oil. Still, many owners of epileptic dogs choose to avoid rosemary-containing foods as a precaution, and some veterinary neurologists recommend the same. Eucalyptus and camphor oils carry similar risks and should be kept away from seizure-prone dogs entirely.
Grapes, Raisins, and Other General Toxins
While grapes and raisins are best known for causing kidney failure in dogs, severe toxicity from any substance can eventually lead to seizures as the body’s systems break down. The same applies to onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, and alcohol. These foods are dangerous for all dogs, but a dog with epilepsy has less neurological margin for error. Any toxin that stresses the liver, kidneys, or nervous system can lower the seizure threshold.
What to Feed Instead
Research increasingly supports diets enriched with medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) for dogs with epilepsy. MCTs, found naturally in coconut oil, are fats that cross into the brain more easily than other types and provide an alternative energy source. In a clinical trial of 11 epileptic dogs fed a diet containing 5.5% MCTs, 8 dogs experienced fewer seizures per month, with 2 achieving complete seizure freedom and 4 more seeing at least a 50% reduction.
The underlying principle is similar to the ketogenic diet used in human epilepsy. By shifting the brain’s fuel source away from glucose and toward ketone bodies, the diet appears to stabilize neuronal activity. You don’t need to design this yourself. Several commercial dog foods are now formulated specifically for neurological support with controlled carbohydrate levels and added MCT oil. Your veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary nutritionist can recommend the right option for your dog’s size and medication regimen.
In practical terms, the safest treats for a seizure-prone dog are small pieces of plain cooked meat (chicken, turkey, lean beef) or low-glycemic vegetables like green beans and broccoli. Avoid anything processed, sweetened, or high in simple carbohydrates. Consistency matters more than perfection: a stable, low-glycemic diet with no toxic exposures gives your dog the best chance at fewer and less severe episodes.
