Repeated large glucose spikes over years contribute to insulin resistance, which is the precursor to type 2 diabetes. Food sequencing is a practical, zero-cost strategy for reducing that cumulative burden. It’s especially relevant if you eat meals high in refined carbohydrates, where the spike potential is greatest.

Where Fruit Fits In

Fruit is a carbohydrate, but it comes packaged with fiber, which complicates things slightly. Research on people with type 2 diabetes found that low-glycemic fruits (like berries, apples, and pears) improved insulin function regardless of whether they were eaten before or after the main meal. Their built-in fiber already slows glucose absorption.

Moderate- and high-glycemic fruits (like watermelon, pineapple, or ripe bananas) showed metabolic benefits only when eaten after the main meal. If you’re choosing between having a banana before dinner or after, after is the better call. For fruits that are already lower on the glycemic index, the timing matters less.

Making It Practical

Strict meal sequencing is easy when your food is already separated on a plate. It gets harder with mixed dishes like stir-fries, pasta with vegetables, or burritos. In those cases, you can still apply the principle loosely: eat a small side salad or some raw vegetables before your main dish. Even a handful of nuts or a few bites of cheese before a carb-heavy meal will slow gastric emptying and blunt the glucose response.

Some meals are simple to reorder. If you’re eating a sandwich with a side salad, eat the salad first. If dinner is steak, broccoli, and mashed potatoes, start with the broccoli, eat the steak, and finish with the potatoes. At a restaurant, eating the protein and vegetable sides before touching the bread basket applies the same logic.
