What Percent of Your Sleep Should Be REM?

For most adults, REM sleep should make up about 20% to 25% of total sleep time. If you’re getting the commonly recommended seven to eight hours, that works out to roughly 90 to 120 minutes of REM per night. This percentage isn’t fixed across your lifetime, though. It shifts significantly from infancy through old age.

REM Percentages by Age

Newborns spend the most time in REM sleep of any age group, with up to 50% of their sleep in this stage. This heavy dose of REM is thought to support the rapid brain development happening in the first months of life.

By the toddler years, that proportion drops considerably. Children, adolescents, and adults all fall into a similar range of about 20% to 25% of total sleep. The consistency across these age groups is notable: whether you’re 8 or 38, your brain needs roughly the same proportion of REM.

Older adults tend to get less. Many people over 65 spend approximately 15% to 20% of their sleep in REM. This decline is a normal part of aging, but larger drops below that range may carry health consequences.

What Your Brain Does During REM

REM stands for rapid eye movement, and the name is literal. Your eyes dart back and forth beneath closed lids while the rest of your body is effectively paralyzed, a state called muscle atonia that prevents you from physically acting out your dreams. Your brain’s electrical activity during REM looks remarkably similar to when you’re awake and alert, which is why researchers sometimes call it “paradoxical sleep.”

The brain’s chemical environment during REM is unique. Acetylcholine, a chemical messenger involved in learning and attention, surges to levels that can actually exceed waking levels. Meanwhile, two other key chemical messengers involved in alertness and mood regulation drop to their lowest point. This specific cocktail creates ideal conditions for certain types of memory processing.

REM sleep plays a particular role in emotional memory. Synchronized brain waves in the 4 to 8 Hz range (called theta waves) cycle through the brain’s memory and emotion centers, strengthening some connections while weakening others. This process helps you consolidate emotional experiences from the day. It also appears to work in tandem with deeper sleep stages: deep sleep reorganizes and transfers memories first, and REM sleep that follows strengthens them at the cellular level.

How REM Shifts Throughout the Night

Your first REM period of the night is the shortest, often lasting only about 10 minutes. As the night goes on, each REM episode gets progressively longer. By the final cycles of sleep in the early morning hours, REM periods can stretch to 30 minutes or more. This is why cutting your sleep short by even an hour disproportionately reduces your REM total: you’re sacrificing the longest, richest REM periods of the night.

This pattern also explains why people who sleep six hours instead of eight don’t just lose 25% of their REM. They may lose a much larger share, since so much REM is concentrated in those final hours.

Why Low REM Sleep Is a Health Concern

Getting too little REM sleep isn’t just about feeling groggy. A study highlighted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute found that for every 5% reduction in REM sleep, death rates from any cause increased by 13% to 17% among the older men studied. Similar patterns appeared in a separate group of middle-aged men and women. The researchers found that insufficient REM was linked to earlier death regardless of other health factors.

Beyond mortality risk, poor REM sleep has been connected to problems with emotional regulation, memory consolidation, and cardiovascular health. People who consistently get less REM tend to have more difficulty processing stressful experiences and are more vulnerable to mood disturbances.

When REM Sleep Runs Too High

An unusually high proportion of REM sleep isn’t necessarily a good sign either. Depression is linked to what researchers call REM sleep disinhibition, where people enter REM faster and spend more time in it than normal. A brain region involved in value-guided behavior appears to both control REM sleep timing and contribute to emotional stability, and dysfunction in this area may explain why depression and disrupted REM patterns so often appear together. If you’re sleeping long hours but waking up emotionally drained, an excess of REM relative to deep sleep could be part of the picture.

How to Protect Your REM Sleep

Several practical factors influence how much REM you get each night. The most straightforward is simply sleeping long enough. Since REM concentrates in the later hours of the night, consistently getting seven to eight hours gives your brain the time it needs to complete those longer REM cycles.

Room temperature matters more than most people realize. Research has shown that warming the sleeping environment toward the upper end of the comfortable range preferentially increases REM sleep duration without significantly affecting other sleep stages. For most people, this means a bedroom around 65 to 68°F (18 to 20°C) rather than significantly cooler. Experimenting within that range can help.

Alcohol is one of the most common REM disruptors. It may help you fall asleep faster, but it suppresses REM sleep in the first half of the night. Even moderate drinking in the evening can reduce your REM percentage noticeably. Caffeine consumed too late in the day, irregular sleep schedules, and sleep apnea also fragment or reduce REM time. If you’re tracking your sleep with a wearable device and consistently seeing REM below 15% of your total, these are the first factors worth examining.
