There is no single universal threshold for acceptable percentage error. In most science classes, errors under 5% are considered excellent and under 10% are generally acceptable. But the real answer depends entirely on what you’re measuring and why, because a 5% error that’s fine in a chemistry lab could be dangerous in a medical test or meaningless in a political poll.
How Percentage Error Is Calculated
Percentage error measures how far your experimental result landed from the known or expected value. The formula is straightforward: subtract the accepted value from your experimental value, take the absolute value of that difference, divide by the accepted value, and multiply by 100. If you measured the boiling point of water at 99.1°C instead of 100°C, your percentage error is 0.9%.
This calculation only works when there’s a known “true” value to compare against. If you’re measuring something where no accepted value exists, you’d use other tools like standard deviation or confidence intervals to describe how reliable your data is.
The 5% Rule of Thumb in Science
In undergraduate physics, chemistry, and biology labs, most instructors treat percentage errors below 5% as strong results. Errors between 5% and 10% are usually acceptable, especially for experiments done with basic equipment. Once you climb above 10%, something likely went wrong with your technique, your instruments, or your experimental setup.
These thresholds aren’t arbitrary. They mirror the convention in statistical testing where a result is considered statistically significant if the probability it occurred by chance is less than 5% (written as P < 0.05). At P < 0.01, or less than 1%, a result is considered highly significant. While percentage error and P-values measure different things, the 5% line shows up repeatedly across science as a rough boundary between "close enough" and "worth questioning."
That said, the acceptable range shifts with the complexity of what you’re measuring. Determining the density of a metal block with a scale and calipers should yield errors well under 5%. Measuring the speed of sound using a stopwatch and a distant wall? You’d be doing well to stay under 10%, simply because the tools and human reaction time introduce unavoidable imprecision.
What Determines an Acceptable Error
Three factors control how much error is tolerable in any given situation: the precision of your instruments, the consequences of being wrong, and the inherent variability of what you’re measuring.
Instrument limitations set a floor on your error. A kitchen scale that reads in whole grams can’t give you a result accurate to a tenth of a gram, so expecting a 0.1% error from it is unrealistic. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires that measurement uncertainty for calibration standards be less than one-third of the maximum allowable tolerance. In other words, your measuring tool needs to be at least three times more precise than the accuracy you’re trying to achieve.
Consequences matter enormously. A 3% error in a college physics experiment earns full marks. A 3% error in a medical dosage calculation could harm a patient. A 3% error in a bridge’s load-bearing calculation could be catastrophic. The higher the stakes, the tighter the tolerance.
Natural variability also plays a role. Biological measurements tend to be noisier than physical ones. Measuring the growth rate of bacteria or the heart rate of test subjects will always produce more scatter than measuring the wavelength of light, because living systems are inherently less predictable.
Acceptable Error in Medical Testing
Clinical laboratories operate under strict, legally mandated error limits set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). These limits vary by test, and they’re surprisingly specific. A blood glucose test must fall within ±8% of the true value (or within 6 mg/dL for low readings). Cholesterol tests allow ±10%. Triglyceride tests allow ±15%. Hemoglobin A1c, the test used to monitor long-term blood sugar in diabetes, must be within ±8% under CLIA rules, though some professional organizations push for a tighter ±6%.
These limits were updated in 2024 to reflect improvements in lab technology, and 29 new tests were added to the required list, including troponin (used to detect heart attacks) and certain tumor markers. Laboratories must demonstrate they meet these standards three times per year through proficiency testing. The tolerances are set not by what’s ideal but by what’s reliably achievable across all clinical labs nationwide while still being clinically meaningful.
Acceptable Error in Surveys and Polls
In polling and survey research, acceptable error is expressed as a margin of error, and the standard target is ±3% to ±5% at a 95% confidence level. This means if a poll says 52% of voters support a candidate with a ±3% margin of error, the true value most likely falls between 49% and 55%.
The “95% confidence level” means that if you repeated the same survey 100 times, about 95 of those surveys would capture the true value within the stated margin. Getting a tighter margin requires a larger sample size. Cutting the margin of error in half roughly requires quadrupling the number of people surveyed, which is why most public polls settle for ±3% as a practical compromise between cost and precision. For high-stakes research, tighter margins like ±2% are sometimes used, but the sample sizes needed become expensive.
Acceptable Error in Engineering and Manufacturing
Engineering tolerances are typically expressed in absolute units rather than percentages, but the underlying logic is the same. A machined part might need to be within ±0.001 inches of its target dimension. Translated to percentage terms, that could represent an error far below 1%. In precision manufacturing, even 1% error can mean a part doesn’t fit, a seal doesn’t hold, or a device fails.
NIST guidelines require that calibration standards carry uncertainties no greater than one-third of the tolerance for the item being measured. If a standard is found to be “out of control,” meaning its deviation exceeds established limits, it cannot be used for calibration until corrective action is taken and verified. This cascading precision requirement means that the instruments used to check your instruments need to be even more accurate than the final measurement demands.
How to Evaluate Your Own Result
If you’re a student trying to figure out whether your lab result is “good enough,” start by comparing your percentage error to the precision of your equipment. Calculate the smallest possible error your instruments could produce, and if your actual error is close to that number, your technique was solid. If your error is many times larger than the instrument limit, look for procedural mistakes.
Consider also whether your error is systematic or random. If you repeated the experiment five times and got results that were all too high by roughly the same amount, you likely have a systematic error: a miscalibrated instrument, an unaccounted-for variable, or a flawed assumption. Random errors, where results scatter both above and below the true value, are expected and can be reduced by averaging more trials. Systematic errors won’t improve with repetition and need to be identified and corrected.
For practical purposes: under 5% is excellent in most educational and general scientific contexts, 5% to 10% is acceptable for complex measurements, and anything above 10% warrants investigation into what went wrong. Outside the classroom, the acceptable threshold is whatever the field, the regulation, or the consequences demand.
