What Percentage of Blood Is Made Up of Plasma? 55–60%

Plasma makes up about 55% to 60% of your total blood volume. The remaining 40% to 45% consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This ratio isn’t fixed, though. It shifts based on your sex, age, hydration level, and overall health.

How the 55–60% Figure Is Measured

The standard way to determine your plasma-to-cell ratio is through a hematocrit test, which measures the percentage of your blood occupied by red blood cells. Since red blood cells account for the vast majority of the non-plasma portion, the hematocrit is essentially the inverse of your plasma percentage.

Normal hematocrit ranges vary by group:

  • Adult males: 41% to 50% (meaning plasma is roughly 50% to 59%)
  • Adult females: 36% to 44% (plasma roughly 56% to 64%)
  • Infants: 32% to 42%
  • Newborns: 45% to 61%

Women typically have a higher plasma percentage than men because they carry fewer red blood cells. Newborns sit at the opposite extreme, with red blood cells taking up as much as 61% of their blood volume, leaving plasma as low as 39%.

What Plasma Is Made Of

Plasma itself is mostly water, about 92%. Proteins account for roughly 7% of plasma’s volume, and the remaining 1% is a mix of dissolved salts, sugars, fats, hormones, and waste products. That 1% sounds trivial, but it includes electrolytes like sodium and potassium that are critical for nerve and muscle function.

The protein portion is dominated by albumin, which makes up about 54% of all plasma proteins. Albumin’s primary job is maintaining osmotic pressure, the force that keeps fluid from leaking out of your blood vessels and into surrounding tissues. The rest of the protein fraction includes antibodies that fight infection and clotting proteins like fibrinogen that stop bleeding when you’re injured.

What Plasma Does in Your Body

Plasma is the liquid carrier that moves everything else through your circulatory system. Red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are all suspended in it. Beyond that transport role, plasma carries nutrients from your digestive system to your cells, shuttles waste products to your kidneys and liver for removal, and distributes hormones from the glands that produce them to the tissues that need them. It also carries antibodies and clotting proteins to sites of infection or injury.

Plasma plays a key role in maintaining blood pressure and fluid balance, too. The albumin dissolved in it creates osmotic pressure that pulls water back into your capillaries. Without enough albumin, fluid seeps into tissues, causing swelling.

Plasma vs. Serum

You’ll sometimes see “serum” and “plasma” used as if they’re interchangeable, but they’re different. Plasma is what you get when you prevent blood from clotting after drawing it (using an anticoagulant). It retains all the clotting proteins, including fibrinogen. Serum is what remains after blood is allowed to clot naturally. The clotting process consumes fibrinogen and traps red blood cells in a solid mass, so serum is essentially plasma minus the clotting factors. Different lab tests call for one or the other depending on what’s being measured.

Why Your Plasma Percentage Changes

The 55–60% figure is an average for healthy adults, but several common situations shift that ratio in either direction.

Dehydration

When you’re dehydrated, you lose water from your bloodstream before you lose cells. This shrinks your plasma volume and makes the cellular portion appear artificially concentrated. Research on dehydrated subjects shows that plasma volume can drop by about 2.2 milliliters per kilogram of body weight, which for a 70-kilogram person translates to roughly 150 milliliters of lost plasma. A standard blood test in this state would show a higher-than-normal hematocrit, not because you have more red blood cells, but because you have less plasma surrounding them.

Anemia

In anemia, the number or size of red blood cells drops, which means plasma occupies a larger share of total blood volume. Hematocrit falls below normal ranges, and the blood becomes relatively more dilute. This is one reason a low hematocrit reading is a red flag for anemia on routine blood work.

Polycythemia

Polycythemia is the opposite situation: an abnormal increase in red blood cells that crowds out plasma and raises the hematocrit above normal. This can happen because the body is genuinely overproducing red blood cells (true polycythemia) or because plasma volume has contracted due to dehydration or other causes (relative polycythemia). The distinction matters because the treatments are completely different, even though the blood test results look similar.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, plasma volume expands significantly, often by 40% to 50%, to support increased blood flow to the uterus and growing fetus. Red blood cell production also rises, but not as fast. The result is a temporary drop in hematocrit, sometimes called “physiological anemia of pregnancy,” which is normal and expected despite the alarming name.

How Plasma Volume Affects Lab Results

Because so many blood tests measure concentrations of substances dissolved in plasma, shifts in plasma volume can distort results. If you’re dehydrated before a blood draw, your electrolytes, hemoglobin, and protein levels may all appear artificially elevated simply because there’s less water diluting them. This is why you’re often asked to drink water normally before blood work. Overhydration can push results in the other direction, making values appear lower than they truly are. Understanding that plasma is a variable, not a constant, helps explain why a single out-of-range lab result doesn’t always indicate a problem.
