What Percentage of Body Fat Is Healthy by Age?

A healthy body fat percentage falls between 9–19% for men and 14–25% for women, depending on age. These ranges account for the fat your body needs to function (protecting organs, regulating hormones, storing energy) while staying below the thresholds linked to metabolic disease. Your ideal number within that range depends on your age, activity level, and body composition goals.

Healthy Ranges by Age and Sex

Body fat naturally increases as you age, so what’s considered healthy at 25 looks different from what’s healthy at 55. Women carry more essential fat than men due to reproductive hormones and breast tissue, which is why their ranges run higher across every age group.

For the general (non-athlete) population, these are the normal ranges:

  • Under 30: 9–15% for men, 14–21% for women
  • Ages 30–50: 11–17% for men, 15–23% for women
  • Over 50: 12–19% for men, 16–25% for women

Landing in the lower end of your range suggests a leaner build with more visible muscle definition. The upper end is still perfectly healthy. Going significantly below the lower end can disrupt hormone production, weaken your immune system, and reduce bone density.

When Body Fat Becomes a Health Risk

The point where body fat starts raising your risk of serious disease is higher than many people assume. Research published in the Annals of Family Medicine defines the unhealthy threshold at 27% or above for men and 44% or above for women. Above those numbers, the risk of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease climbs significantly.

One important finding from that research: people with a “normal” weight on the scale but an elevated body fat percentage, a condition sometimes called normal weight obesity, often have no idea they’re at increased risk. Their BMI looks fine, but their actual body composition tells a different story. This is especially common in people who are relatively sedentary and have lost muscle mass over time. The number on the scale can be misleading without context about what that weight is made of.

Why Visceral Fat Matters More Than Total Fat

Not all body fat carries the same risk. The fat just beneath your skin (the kind you can pinch) is far less dangerous than visceral fat, which wraps around your liver, intestines, and other organs deep in your abdomen. Visceral fat actively releases inflammatory compounds that drive insulin resistance, raise blood pressure, and increase heart disease risk.

A rough guideline from the Cleveland Clinic: visceral fat should make up about 10% of your total body fat. So if your total body fat is 20%, roughly 2% of your body weight would be visceral fat. When total body fat climbs above the recommended range, visceral fat tends to climb disproportionately. For women, a waist circumference of 35 inches or more signals elevated visceral fat risk. For men, the cutoff is around 40 inches.

Waist measurement is actually one of the simplest and most useful tools here. Even if you never get a precise body fat reading, tracking your waist circumference gives you a practical window into visceral fat changes over time.

How Body Composition Shifts After 65

Aging reshapes your body in ways that make standard ranges harder to apply. Starting as early as your 30s, you begin losing skeletal muscle. By your 70s, you may have only half the muscle mass you had in your 20s. That lost muscle is often replaced by fat, so your weight can stay the same while your body composition deteriorates underneath.

This process, called sarcopenia, is why Johns Hopkins Medicine flags BMI as particularly unreliable for adults over 65. Someone with a “normal” BMI who has quietly lost significant muscle and gained fat may actually be at higher risk than their numbers suggest. Muscle weighs more than fat by volume, so a person who strength trains and carries more muscle might weigh more on the scale but be in far better metabolic health.

For older adults, maintaining or building muscle mass is often more important than hitting a specific body fat number. Muscle keeps you mobile, protects against falls, supports bone density, and improves insulin sensitivity. Weight loss through dieting alone, or through weight loss medications, can accelerate the loss of both muscle and bone, potentially making body composition worse even as the scale drops.

Body Fat Ranges for Athletes

Athletes typically carry less body fat than the general population, but the “right” amount varies enormously by sport. There’s no universal athletic standard. A marathon runner and a football lineman have completely different body composition needs.

Some typical ranges across sports:

  • Marathon runners: 5–11% (men), 10–15% (women)
  • Swimmers: 9–12% (men), 14–24% (women)
  • Soccer players: 10–18% (men), 13–18% (women)

The extremely low end of these ranges (5–8% for men, 10–12% for women) is typically only sustainable during competition periods. Staying that lean year-round can suppress hormones, impair recovery, and increase injury risk. Most athletes perform best when they sit comfortably within their sport’s range rather than pushing the floor.

How to Measure Body Fat Accurately

The method you use matters, because they vary in accuracy by a surprisingly wide margin.

DEXA scans (the same dual-energy X-ray used for bone density testing) are considered the clinical gold standard. They map fat, muscle, and bone throughout your body and can even show where fat is distributed, which helps assess visceral fat. A DEXA scan typically costs $50–150 out of pocket at imaging centers or university labs.

Bioelectrical impedance, the technology built into many smart scales and gym machines, sends a small electrical current through your body and estimates fat based on how quickly it travels. Clinical-grade versions with electrodes placed on the hands and feet are reasonably accurate, roughly comparable to skinfold calipers. Consumer-grade smart scales, however, can swing by several percentage points depending on your hydration, when you last ate, and even the temperature of your feet.

Skinfold calipers, where a trained person pinches and measures fat at specific body sites, carry a standard error of about 3.5% in leaner individuals. Accuracy depends heavily on the skill of the person taking the measurement. With an experienced tester, calipers are a reliable and inexpensive option.

Whichever method you choose, consistency matters more than precision. Using the same method under similar conditions (same time of day, same hydration level) lets you track meaningful trends even if the absolute number isn’t perfect. A DEXA scan every six to twelve months, or regular caliper measurements with the same tester, gives you a much clearer picture of your body composition than stepping on a bathroom scale ever will.
