A resting heart rate above 100 beats per minute (bpm) is generally considered too high for adults. This threshold is where doctors draw the line for a condition called tachycardia, and a rate consistently above it warrants a conversation with your healthcare provider. But the full picture is more nuanced than a single number, because even rates in the 80s and 90s carry measurable health risks over time.
The 100 bpm Threshold
The standard normal range for adult resting heart rate is 60 to 100 bpm. Once you’re consistently above 100 at rest, that’s no longer considered normal. A single high reading doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Stress, anxiety, caffeine, dehydration, or simply rushing around before sitting down can all push your heart rate up temporarily. The key word is “consistently.” If your resting heart rate regularly sits above 100 when you’re calm and still, something is driving it there.
For children, the thresholds are very different. Newborns can have a resting heart rate as high as 205 bpm and still be in the normal range. Toddlers typically fall between 98 and 140, school-age kids between 75 and 118. By adolescence (ages 13 to 17), the normal range matches adults at 60 to 100 bpm.
Why the 80s and 90s Still Matter
Even if your heart rate falls within the “normal” range, the higher end of that range is linked to worse long-term outcomes. A large study followed nearly 2,800 men over 16 years and found a clear, graded relationship between resting heart rate and death from all causes. Compared to men with the lowest resting heart rates (under 50 bpm), those with rates between 81 and 90 bpm had roughly double the risk of dying during the study period. Men with rates above 90 had triple the risk.
The relationship held even after researchers adjusted for other health factors. For every 10 bpm increase in resting heart rate, the risk of death rose by about 16%. This pattern appeared in both smokers and nonsmokers, though the effect was slightly stronger in smokers (20% per 10 bpm increase versus 14%).
This doesn’t mean a heart rate of 85 is dangerous in the way that 120 is dangerous. But it does mean that a lower resting heart rate is generally a sign of better cardiovascular fitness and efficiency, and that trending downward over time is a good thing.
What a High Resting Heart Rate Tells You
A persistently elevated resting heart rate is almost always a signal that something else is going on. Common medical causes include anemia (your heart beats faster to compensate for fewer oxygen-carrying red blood cells), an overactive thyroid gland (which revs up your entire metabolism), an underlying infection, or a reaction to medication. Some people also experience elevated heart rates from conditions that affect how their nervous system regulates blood pressure and heart rate.
Temporary causes are more common and less concerning. Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, dehydration, poor sleep, and emotional stress can all raise your resting heart rate noticeably. If you check your heart rate after a stressful phone call or your third cup of coffee, you may get a reading that doesn’t reflect your true baseline.
How to Get an Accurate Reading
Your resting heart rate should be measured when you’re truly at rest. The most reliable time is first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed, after a full night of sleep. Sit or lie still for a few minutes before taking the measurement. Avoid checking it right after exercise, a meal, or anything emotionally stimulating.
You can measure it by placing two fingers on the inside of your wrist (just below the base of your thumb) and counting beats for 30 seconds, then doubling the number. Most smartwatches and fitness trackers also measure resting heart rate continuously throughout the day and average it, which can give you a useful trend over weeks and months. A single reading matters less than the pattern.
Fitness Level Changes the Equation
One of the biggest factors influencing resting heart rate is cardiovascular fitness. Athletes often have resting heart rates between 40 and 50 bpm because their hearts are strong enough to pump more blood with each beat, so they don’t need to beat as often. Elite endurance athletes can go even lower. Five-time Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain had a resting heart rate of 28 bpm.
On the flip side, if you’re sedentary, your heart has to work harder to move the same amount of blood. A resting rate in the high 70s, 80s, or 90s in someone who doesn’t exercise regularly is a sign that the heart isn’t working as efficiently as it could. Regular aerobic exercise is one of the most effective ways to bring a resting heart rate down over time. Even moderate activity like brisk walking, done consistently, can lower your resting rate by several beats per minute within a few weeks to months.
Warning Signs That Need Immediate Attention
A high heart rate on its own is worth monitoring, but a high heart rate paired with certain symptoms is a different situation entirely. If your heart rate is above 100 and you’re also experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, or a pounding sensation in your chest, that combination requires immediate medical attention. These symptoms can indicate that your heart’s electrical system is misfiring or that your heart isn’t pumping blood effectively.
A resting heart rate that drops below 35 to 40 bpm alongside those same symptoms is equally concerning from the opposite direction. The number alone isn’t always the problem. What matters is whether your heart is meeting your body’s needs, and symptoms like dizziness and breathlessness are your body’s way of telling you it isn’t.
