A normal resting pulse rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That range applies whether you’re sitting on the couch or lying in bed, as long as you’ve been at rest for at least five minutes. Where you land within that window depends on your age, fitness level, sex, and what substances you’ve recently consumed.
Normal Resting Pulse by Age
Hearts beat faster in childhood and gradually slow as the body grows. A newborn’s heart races at 100 to 160 bpm because a tiny heart has to pump more frequently to circulate blood through a rapidly developing body. By ages 6 to 10, the range narrows to 70 to 110 bpm, and by age 15 it settles into the adult range of 60 to 100 bpm.
Here’s a general guide:
- Newborn: 100–160 bpm
- 0–3 months: 70–170 bpm
- 6–12 months: 80–140 bpm
- 1–3 years: 80–130 bpm
- 3–5 years: 80–120 bpm
- 6–10 years: 70–110 bpm
- 11–14 years: 60–105 bpm
- 15 years and older: 60–100 bpm
Differences Between Men and Women
Women tend to have a resting heart rate about 5 to 10 bpm higher than men. The reason is structural: the female heart generally has a smaller chamber size and pumps less blood with each beat, so it compensates by beating more often. A woman resting comfortably at 80 bpm and a man at 72 bpm are both perfectly normal. This difference is consistent across age groups and doesn’t signal any health concern on its own.
Why Athletes Have Lower Pulse Rates
Regular cardiovascular exercise makes the heart stronger and more efficient. Each contraction pushes out more blood, so the heart doesn’t need to beat as often to keep up with the body’s demands. Highly trained athletes can have resting heart rates as low as 40 bpm. For someone who exercises regularly, a pulse in the 50s is common and healthy. If you’re not physically active and your resting pulse consistently sits below 60, that’s worth mentioning to a doctor.
What Affects Your Pulse Day to Day
Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts throughout the day and from one day to the next based on several factors.
Caffeine is the most common substance linked with noticeable heart rate changes. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and even chocolate can cause your heart to speed up or feel like it’s fluttering. The effect varies widely from person to person. Some people can drink espresso with no change, while others notice palpitations after a single cup.
Alcohol has a more complicated relationship with heart rate. Small amounts may not cause obvious changes, but for some people, even moderate drinking triggers rhythm disturbances. Tobacco consistently raises heart rate by stimulating the release of stress hormones and constricting blood vessels. Stress, dehydration, poor sleep, fever, and certain medications (like decongestants or thyroid drugs) all push the number upward too.
How to Check Your Pulse Accurately
You can measure your pulse at two easy-to-find spots: the inside of your wrist or the side of your neck. For the wrist, place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the thumb side of your inner wrist, in the groove between the bone and the tendon. For the neck, press those same two fingertips gently into the soft groove beside your windpipe. Don’t use your thumb, which has its own pulse and can give you a false reading.
Count the beats for a full 60 seconds for the most accurate result. If you’re in a hurry, count for 15 seconds and multiply by four. Take the measurement after sitting quietly for at least five minutes, ideally in the morning before caffeine or exercise. Smartwatches and fitness trackers give a reasonable estimate, but a manual check is the simplest way to verify what your device is reporting.
Your Pulse During Exercise
During physical activity, your heart rate should climb well above your resting number. How high it goes depends on how hard you’re working and your maximum heart rate, which you can roughly estimate by subtracting your age from 220. A 40-year-old, for example, has an estimated maximum of about 180 bpm.
The American Heart Association breaks exercise intensity into two zones based on that maximum:
- Moderate intensity: 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate. For a 40-year-old, that’s roughly 90 to 126 bpm. This is the zone for brisk walking, casual cycling, or light swimming.
- Vigorous intensity: 70% to 85% of your maximum. For the same 40-year-old, that’s about 126 to 153 bpm. Running, fast cycling, and high-intensity interval training fall here.
Staying within these ranges helps you gauge whether your workout is intense enough to build cardiovascular fitness without overdoing it. If you’re just getting back into exercise, aim for the moderate zone and build up gradually.
When Your Pulse May Signal a Problem
A heart rate consistently above 100 bpm at rest is called tachycardia. A rate consistently below 60 bpm in someone who isn’t physically active is called bradycardia. Neither is automatically dangerous on its own, but both deserve attention if they persist.
The numbers become more urgent when paired with symptoms. A pulse below 35 to 40 bpm or above 100 bpm warrants medical evaluation, especially if you also experience heart palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. These combinations can indicate that the heart isn’t circulating blood effectively enough to meet the body’s needs.
Context matters too. A pulse of 110 after climbing stairs is expected. A pulse of 110 while sitting on the couch watching television is not. The most useful thing you can do is know your own baseline. Check your resting pulse a few times over the course of a week at the same time of day, and note the range you typically fall in. That way, if something shifts significantly, you have a meaningful comparison point rather than just a number on a chart.
