National survey data from the CDC puts the mean adult resting heart rate at 72 bpm, and most healthy adults land somewhere in the 60s to low 80s. Where you fall within that range depends on your fitness level, sex, age, and several other factors worth understanding.

Average Resting Heart Rate by Age

Heart rate changes dramatically from birth through adolescence, then stabilizes in adulthood. Infants average around 129 bpm, which drops steadily as the heart grows larger and more efficient. By the teen years, the average is already close to adult levels. Here’s how it breaks down across age groups, based on CDC data:

A smaller heart holds less blood per beat, so it compensates by beating more frequently to circulate the same volume. This difference is entirely normal and doesn’t indicate any health disadvantage.

The gap is most pronounced in younger women. Between ages 20 and 39, women average 76 bpm while men average 71. After 40, women’s resting heart rate drops to about 73 bpm, narrowing the difference.

What Athletes Can Expect

If you exercise regularly, your resting heart rate will likely sit below 60 bpm. The American Heart Association notes that active people can have a resting rate as low as 40 bpm, and this is a sign of cardiovascular efficiency, not a problem. A well-conditioned heart pumps more blood with each beat, so it simply doesn’t need to beat as often.

Among endurance athletes specifically, rates below 40 bpm are common. A study of 465 endurance athletes published in Circulation found that 38% had resting heart rates at or below 40 bpm, and about 2% dipped to 30 bpm or lower. Rates in the 40s and 50s are typical for recreational runners, cyclists, and swimmers who train consistently. If you’re fit and feel fine, a low number is generally good news.

Lower Is Generally Better

Your resting heart rate isn’t just a number on a fitness tracker. It’s one of the more reliable indicators of cardiovascular health, and the relationship between heart rate and long-term health risk is strikingly consistent. A 16-year study following middle-aged men found that every 10 bpm increase in resting heart rate was associated with a 16% increase in the risk of dying from any cause, even after accounting for fitness level, activity habits, and other heart disease risk factors.

The risk climbs in a graded pattern. Compared to men with rates below 50 bpm, those in the 51 to 80 range had about a 40 to 50% higher mortality risk. A resting rate of 81 to 90 bpm doubled the risk. Above 90 bpm, the risk tripled. These numbers held up after adjusting for exercise habits and physical fitness, meaning a high resting heart rate is an independent warning sign, not just a marker of being out of shape.

This doesn’t mean a reading of 78 should alarm you. Population averages sit in the low 70s for good reason. But if your resting heart rate is consistently in the upper 80s or above 90, it’s worth paying attention to, especially if you also have high blood pressure or carry extra weight.

When a Heart Rate Is Too High or Too Low

Clinically, a resting heart rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia, and above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. These are diagnostic thresholds, not automatic red flags. Bradycardia in a fit person is expected and harmless. In someone who doesn’t exercise much, a rate below 60 paired with dizziness, fatigue, or fainting can signal an electrical problem with the heart that needs evaluation.

Tachycardia at rest (above 100 bpm) can be triggered by temporary factors like anxiety, fever, dehydration, or caffeine. A persistently elevated rate without an obvious cause deserves medical attention, as it may point to thyroid dysfunction, anemia, or a heart rhythm disorder.

Factors That Shift Your Resting Heart Rate

Your resting heart rate fluctuates day to day, and several things push it higher or lower temporarily. Caffeine, nicotine, and sugar all raise heart rate. So do stress, depression, illness (even a cold or flu), and poor sleep. Smoking chronically elevates resting heart rate over time.

Medications also play a significant role. Beta blockers and calcium channel blockers, commonly prescribed for blood pressure, slow the heart. Stimulant medications and certain antidepressants raise it. If your rate seems unusually high or low and you take any of these, the medication is likely a factor. Fitness level has the largest long-term influence: consistent aerobic exercise is the most reliable way to bring your resting heart rate down over weeks and months.

How to Measure Accurately

To get a true resting reading, you need to minimize anything that temporarily raises your heart rate. The best time is first thing in the morning, before getting out of bed. If you’re measuring later in the day, sit quietly for at least five minutes first. Avoid checking within one to two hours of exercise or a stressful event, and wait at least an hour after drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages.

Place two fingers (index and middle) on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb, or on the side of your neck below the jawline. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two.
