A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That range applies when you’re awake, calm, and sitting still. Your actual number within that window depends on your age, fitness level, medications, and several other factors that shift your baseline up or down.
Resting Heart Rate for Adults
To find your resting heart rate, sit quietly for a few minutes, then press two fingers against the inside of your wrist or the side of your neck. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two. The best time to check is first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, since movement, food, and caffeine all push the number higher.
Most healthy adults land somewhere between 60 and 100 bpm. A rate consistently in the lower part of that range generally signals a more efficient heart. Each beat pumps more blood, so the heart doesn’t need to work as hard at rest. Highly trained endurance athletes often sit well below 60 bpm, and rates at or below 40 bpm are common in that group. Up to 80% of endurance athletes develop resting rates below 60 as their heart muscle adapts to sustained training. This is a normal physiological change, not a sign of trouble, and recent research from a study published in Circulation suggests the capacity for this adaptation may be partly genetic.
On the clinical side, a resting rate consistently below 50 bpm in a non-athlete is generally considered too slow, while a rate above 100 bpm at rest is considered too fast. Either extreme can cause symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath.
Normal Heart Rate by Age
Children’s hearts beat considerably faster than adult hearts because their hearts are smaller and need more contractions to circulate the same volume of blood. Data from a large national health survey (NHANES) gives a clear picture of how resting heart rate drops as kids grow:
- Newborns (under 1 year): Average of 129 bpm, with a typical range of 103 to 156 bpm
- 1 year old: Average of 118 bpm, typical range of 95 to 138 bpm
- 2 to 3 years: Average of 107 bpm, typical range of 86 to 124 bpm
- 12 to 15 years: Average of 78 bpm, typical range of 58 to 98 bpm
- 16 to 19 years: Average of 75 bpm, typical range of 54 to 95 bpm
By the late teenage years, heart rate settles into the adult range and stays relatively stable through middle age. It can creep up slightly in older adults as the heart loses some of its elasticity, though regular exercise can offset much of that change.
Heart Rate During Exercise
Your heart rate during a workout should stay below your maximum heart rate, which is the fastest your heart can safely beat. The classic formula for estimating this number is 220 minus your age. So a 40-year-old would have an estimated max of 180 bpm. The problem is that this formula becomes increasingly inaccurate as you get older. Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology tested more than 3,300 healthy adults and found that the old formula can underestimate maximum heart rate by as much as 40 beats in older adults. Their updated formula (211 minus 0.64 times your age) tracks real-world data more closely. For that same 40-year-old, the revised estimate would be about 185 bpm.
Most exercise guidelines use percentages of your max to define training zones. Light activity sits around 50 to 60% of your max, moderate exercise falls between 60 and 70%, and vigorous effort pushes into 70 to 85%. Staying in these zones helps you train effectively without overloading your cardiovascular system.
Heart Rate Recovery: A Fitness Marker
How quickly your heart rate drops after you stop exercising is one of the most useful indicators of cardiovascular fitness. To measure it, note your peak heart rate at the end of the hardest part of your workout, then rest for exactly one minute and check again. Subtract the second number from the first. A drop of 18 beats or more in that first minute is considered a good recovery. A smaller drop suggests your heart is working harder than it should to return to baseline, which can reflect lower fitness or, in some cases, an underlying cardiovascular issue worth investigating.
Tracking this number over weeks of training gives you a practical way to see whether your fitness is actually improving. As your cardiovascular system gets more efficient, your recovery number will climb.
What Pushes Your Heart Rate Up or Down
Several everyday factors can temporarily shift your resting heart rate, which is why a single reading doesn’t tell the whole story. Measuring at the same time each day, ideally in the morning, gives you a much more reliable picture.
Stress is one of the most common causes of a temporarily elevated rate. Mental and emotional stress dials down the calming branch of your nervous system and ramps up the fight-or-flight response, pushing your heart faster. Heat does something similar. Hot weather or a warm environment activates your sympathetic nervous system, raising your heart rate as your body tries to cool itself. Interestingly, long-term cold exposure doesn’t seem to have a lasting effect on heart rate. The body adapts within a couple of months.
Caffeine, dehydration, and poor sleep can all bump your resting rate by several beats. Smoking has a more persistent effect, keeping resting heart rate elevated over time. On the other side, certain medications are specifically designed to slow the heart. Some blood pressure drugs work partly by reducing heart rate, and even foods like grapefruit can interact with those medications and affect your numbers.
Conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease can also influence resting heart rate. Body size and posture play a role too. You may notice your heart beats a few bpm faster when you stand up compared to when you’re lying down.
When Your Heart Rate Is Worth Watching
A resting heart rate that consistently sits above 100 bpm without an obvious explanation (like caffeine or anxiety) deserves attention. The same is true for a rate that regularly dips below 50 bpm if you’re not an athlete, especially if it comes with lightheadedness, fainting, or unusual fatigue. Sudden spikes or drops that you can feel, sometimes described as a pounding, racing, or fluttering sensation, are also worth noting.
Context matters more than any single number. A resting rate of 55 in someone who runs five days a week means something very different from 55 in someone who is sedentary and feeling dizzy. Tracking your own baseline over time is the most useful thing you can do, because a meaningful change from your personal normal is more informative than where you fall on a population-wide chart.
