A standard blood test can reveal a surprising amount about your health, from how well your organs are functioning to whether you’re fighting an infection, low on key nutrients, or at risk for heart disease or diabetes. The specific results depend on which panel your doctor orders, but most routine bloodwork covers your blood cells, blood sugar, cholesterol, and markers of liver and kidney health. Here’s what each type of test actually measures and what those results mean.
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The CBC is the most commonly ordered blood test, and it gives a broad snapshot of your overall health by measuring three main types of blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body. White blood cells fight infections and disease. Platelets help your blood clot to stop bleeding.
Beyond simple cell counts, a CBC also measures hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells), hematocrit (the percentage of your blood made up of red blood cells), and the average size of your red blood cells. Together, these numbers can flag anemia, infections, clotting problems, immune disorders, and even some blood cancers. If your white blood cell count is elevated, for example, it often signals that your body is actively fighting off an illness. A low red blood cell count or low hemoglobin points toward anemia, which can explain fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath.
A variation called a CBC with differential breaks your white blood cells into five subtypes, which helps narrow down whether an infection is bacterial or viral, or whether an allergic reaction or more serious condition is driving the numbers up.
Blood Sugar and Diabetes Screening
Blood tests are the primary way to screen for diabetes and prediabetes. A fasting glucose test measures your blood sugar after you haven’t eaten for 8 to 12 hours. The normal range for fasting glucose is 74 to 106 mg/dL.
For a longer view, an A1c test shows your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. The CDC uses these thresholds: below 5.7% is normal, 5.7% to 6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher means diabetes. The A1c doesn’t require fasting and is useful because it captures patterns rather than a single moment in time. If your fasting glucose or A1c comes back in the prediabetes range, that’s a window where lifestyle changes like diet and exercise can meaningfully lower your risk.
Metabolic Panel: Liver and Kidney Health
A comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) tests 14 different substances in your blood and is one of the most informative routine panels. It covers two major organ systems at once.
For your kidneys, the panel measures BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and creatinine. These are waste products your kidneys filter out and remove through urine. When levels are higher than expected, it can mean your kidneys aren’t filtering as efficiently as they should. For your liver, the panel checks three enzymes: ALP, ALT, and AST. Elevated levels of these enzymes suggest liver inflammation or damage, which can result from anything from alcohol use to medications to hepatitis. The panel also measures bilirubin, a waste product created when old red blood cells break down. Your liver normally clears bilirubin from your body, so high levels can point to liver problems or, in some cases, a blockage in the bile ducts.
Albumin, the most abundant protein in your blood, is also part of this panel. It’s made in your liver and plays a role in keeping fluid balanced in your bloodstream. Low albumin can signal liver disease, kidney disease, or nutritional deficiencies. The CMP also includes electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium, which affect everything from your heartbeat to muscle function.
Cholesterol and Heart Risk
A lipid panel measures five types of fats in your blood and is one of the main tools for assessing cardiovascular risk. It includes total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol, and triglycerides.
LDL cholesterol is the one most closely tied to heart disease because it can build up inside your blood vessel walls, narrowing them over time. HDL works in the opposite direction, helping clear LDL from your vessels. Triglycerides are a separate type of fat associated with both heart disease and inflammation of the pancreas when levels run high. VLDL cholesterol comes largely from recently eaten food, which is why lipid panels typically require fasting. If VLDL is elevated even after fasting, it may indicate your body isn’t processing cholesterol correctly.
Your doctor looks at these numbers together rather than in isolation. Someone with moderately high total cholesterol but very high HDL, for instance, may be at lower risk than the total number alone suggests.
Inflammation and Infection Markers
When your body is fighting an injury, infection, or chronic disease, your liver ramps up production of a protein called C-reactive protein (CRP). A CRP blood test measures how much of this protein is circulating in your blood. Healthy people typically have very low levels, around 0.8 to 1.0 mg/dL or less. Values above that threshold indicate inflammation somewhere in your body.
The tricky part is that CRP tells you inflammation exists but not where it is or what’s causing it. Elevated CRP can show up with bacterial or viral infections, autoimmune disorders like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and lung conditions like asthma. Your doctor will interpret the number alongside your symptoms, medical history, and other test results. Another inflammation marker, called the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), is often ordered alongside CRP to build a fuller picture.
Thyroid Function
Thyroid blood tests measure how well your thyroid gland is doing its job of regulating your metabolism, energy, and body temperature. The most common starting test measures thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which your pituitary gland releases to tell the thyroid how much hormone to produce. An abnormally high TSH usually means your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism), while a low TSH suggests it’s overactive (hyperthyroidism). If TSH comes back abnormal, your doctor will typically follow up with tests measuring the actual hormones your thyroid produces to pinpoint the problem.
Vitamins and Minerals
Nutrient-level blood tests aren’t always part of a standard panel, but they’re commonly ordered when symptoms suggest a deficiency or when you follow a restricted diet. The most frequently tested nutrients include vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, magnesium, zinc, and iodine. Vegans and vegetarians are especially prone to low B12 and iodine since those nutrients come primarily from animal products.
Vitamin D deficiency is widespread even among people who eat a varied diet, particularly in northern climates or among those who spend limited time outdoors. Symptoms like persistent fatigue, muscle weakness, or bone pain often prompt testing. Low B12 can cause fatigue, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, and difficulty thinking clearly. These are treatable once identified, which is why testing matters if you’re experiencing vague, hard-to-explain symptoms.
Which Tests Require Fasting
Some blood tests need you to fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand, usually meaning nothing but water after dinner the night before a morning draw. The tests that typically require fasting include blood glucose, the lipid panel, and the basic metabolic panel. In some cases, your doctor may also ask you to fast for liver function tests or kidney function panels. If you eat before a fasting test, the results can be skewed, particularly for glucose and triglycerides, and you may need to reschedule.
Tests like a CBC, A1c, CRP, and thyroid panel generally don’t require fasting, though your lab or doctor’s office will give you specific instructions. When in doubt, fasting is the safer bet if your appointment is in the morning.
What Abnormal Results Actually Mean
A single value outside the reference range doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong. Lab results are based on population averages, and about 5% of healthy people will fall slightly outside the “normal” range on any given test. Mild deviations are common and often resolve on their own or reflect temporary factors like dehydration, a recent meal, stress, or intense exercise.
What matters more is the pattern. Consistently abnormal results, values that are significantly outside the range, or multiple related markers pointing in the same direction are what typically lead to further investigation. Your results also gain meaning in context: your age, sex, medications, and existing health conditions all affect what’s expected. This is why the same number might be flagged for one person and considered perfectly fine for another.
