At 4 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of a poppy seed, roughly 1 to 2 millimeters long. At this stage, it’s officially called an embryo and is just barely visible to the naked eye. Despite that tiny size, this is one of the most active weeks of early development, with the groundwork being laid for the brain, heart, and every major organ system.
Why 4 Weeks Can Be Confusing
Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last menstrual period, not from conception. That means at “4 weeks pregnant,” the embryo itself is only about 2 weeks old. Most pregnancies last roughly 40 weeks by this counting method, and 4 weeks is typically the earliest point at which you’d miss a period and get a positive pregnancy test.
This timing gap matters because some sources describe development based on fertilization age and others use gestational age. When you see “4 weeks” on a pregnancy app or from your doctor, they’re using gestational age.
What’s Happening at Poppy-Seed Size
The embryo has recently completed one of the most important transitions in early pregnancy. Around day 10 to 12 after fertilization, the cluster of cells known as a blastocyst finished burrowing into the uterine lining and became an embryo surrounded by a fluid-filled sac. By week 4, three distinct layers of cells have formed, and each one is destined to become a different set of organs.
The outer layer will eventually build the entire nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, along with the surface layer of skin. The middle layer produces connective tissues: muscles, bones, the circulatory system, and kidneys. The innermost layer lines the digestive and respiratory tracts. Every organ in the body traces back to one of these three layers, and by week 4 they’re already separating and organizing.
The Heart and Neural Tube
Two landmarks make week 4 remarkable for something so small. First, the neural tube begins to form. This is the structure that becomes the brain and spinal cord. Around day 22, the edges of this developing tube start to fuse near the junction between the future brain and spinal cord. By day 24 the top opening closes, and by day 28 the entire tube seals shut. The brain end has already divided into three early sections that will later become distinct regions.
Second, the heart starts beating. By day 22 or 23, a primitive tube-shaped heart begins rhythmic contractions, making it the first functioning organ in the embryo. There are no chambers yet, no valves. It’s a simple tube pushing fluid through a rudimentary circulatory loop. But it’s working.
What You Might Feel
At 4 weeks, many people don’t feel anything unusual yet. The most common early sign is a missed period, which is often what triggers a pregnancy test. Some people notice light spotting around this time, caused by the embryo attaching to the blood-vessel-rich uterine lining. This implantation bleeding is typically much lighter than a period, often just a few spots of pink or brown, and it usually happens within 10 to 14 days after ovulation.
Your body is already producing a pregnancy hormone called hCG, which is what home tests detect. At 4 weeks, blood levels of hCG can range widely, from nearly undetectable to around 750 units per liter. That wide range is normal. A single hCG reading matters less than whether levels are rising appropriately over the following days.
Putting the Size in Perspective
A poppy seed is genuinely tiny, smaller than a grain of rice, smaller than a sesame seed. Over the next several weeks the embryo will grow rapidly, doubling and tripling in size week after week. By week 5 it’s comparable to a sesame seed, and by week 8 it reaches roughly the size of a kidney bean. But at week 4, you’re looking at a speck that weighs almost nothing and fits on the tip of a pencil, yet already contains the earliest blueprint for a beating heart and a developing nervous system.
